The Evolution of YouTube: A Comprehensive Study

When YouTube was launched, its goal was clear: it was designed to address the growing need for an online video sharing platform only. With the first user-generated video “Me at the Zoo,” YouTube was established, and the rest has proven to be history. By offering an easy-to-use platform and welcoming the thoughts of new applications and new users, YouTube has earned its today’s top position. It is based on an innovative idea, quite ahead of its time in 2005, i.e., the flourishing ecosystem of content creators and the energetic users. YouTube modernized the online video watching by speeding up both the upload and the distribution of digital video. Over the last 11 years, YouTube has evolved from a simple video sharing site to give the world additional functionality of live streaming, video blogging, social sharing, and broadcasting. YouTube stands out from any available video platform because it empowers users to interact and broadcast in real-time while being in control of their videos. Being a stage for a sensible ecosystem around user-generated video, the interface has naturally evolved into something of significance.

2. The Growth and Impact of YouTube

Much has been written about the evolution of YouTube. From a company that was initially slow to monetize and burned through tens of millions of dollars, it has become a platform where millions of creators can make a living. With the addition of various types of niche content, a large number of viewers see the platform as a video search engine. For many, especially younger people, YouTube has become a primary entertainment medium and watching videos on YouTube has become their initial video viewing. The increasing availability of Wi-Fi and LTE connections means that users are not just viewing videos at their homes. Instead, they consume YouTube content when on the move, leaving a cinema without using the public Wi-Fi, or in restaurants, airplane washrooms, basically treating it as an audiovisual.

YouTube was designed to be a video hosting and sharing site. As noted by a participant in our in-depth interview, YouTube’s initial appeal was centered on its functionality: “It was a platform to upload videos; to take your files and compress them, host them in the cloud, get scripts into Flash’s .flv format.” Although intended to appeal to everyone, the original user base of YouTube primarily concentrated on two major types of users: video creators and video viewers. Video viewers use YouTube as a resource for entertainment to watch videos, while video creators use YouTube as an outlet to distribute video content and gain an audience.

3. Technological Innovations and Features

The video server delivers needed data and payments through the webserver to the host-server for payment confirmation in the back-end network according to demand, market demand, and attributes of the video file. High download speeds and commercial-grade stability are provided by the webserver, which ensures that the user enjoys an ideal network experience.

The vital and creative internet world of ‘NOW’ – the YouTube anomaly – was born. The advent, success and popularity of YouTube has had tremendous implications for the web, the media, interactive interference, and not least society itself. It provided a new platform and a way for people to air and share their creative contributions, to publish work, show and develop their talents, propagate conspiracy theories, and ultimately serve as a mirror for society and culture at that time. If these accusations concerning YouTube seem excessive, a simple internet search for the term “often hacked” returns more than 3 million relevant results. A search for “often screened” returns several million, including many well-known television series ‘broadcast’ (often illegally), and therefore fall into a “professional” category, and are more like television programs than user-generated content. Such videos have a different impact and role on society than those made possible by the YouTube community.

Videos are the most powerful and persuasive tools we have to communicate. They have the best visual and auditory aspects of two other powerful teaching tools – slides and speaking – and combine them in an engaging, often very memorable and hypnotic way. We absorb audio-visual information simultaneously, something we don’t do nearly as enlightened with text. It is no wonder that as this technology developed it would become a major form of communication. And so, just as the web developed in the late 20th century, so did the visual web. Although good video editing software remains expensive, in July 2006, it was true that if you had access to a video camera (phone) and you could make a video, you could post it on YouTube.

5. Future Trends and Challenges

Searching will also develop solutions to problems shared with the WWW search, like the significant amount of information about videos, user contributions, and options creation, and video comparison.
