How to Improve Your Homework Solutions
Students lead busy lives. They have to balance a heavy course load, family responsibilities, volunteer work, extracurriculars, and perhaps even a part-time job. For those students who are trying to work, attend school, and raise a family, life is even more hectic. When these students sit down to work on a homework assignment, they want to finish the work as quickly as possible, no matter how uninteresting or difficult the material may be. At the same time, other students in the class also want to get their homework done as quickly as possible. These students all have the same goal: they want to finish the work as fast as they can. Some students are actually much quicker at completing their homework than students who delay and dawdle until the last minute. These advanced students take a different approach. They follow a well-planned schedule that allows them to complete their work in a timely manner, with frequent breaks so that they can relax and refresh and then get back to that work with renewed concentration. However, working in the library may not always be suitable. Thanks to technology, many students are now able to start their homework the day it is assigned instead of rushing through and doing it all in one evening. By using apps or programs on the computer, they can map out a workable schedule over the day. They can also locate Internet articles or materials in advance, allowing them to use their time productively while in the school library. But no matter what strategy you prefer to use, it is critically important to recognize that the ability to “start with the assignment,” is a key skill in effective time management. When you actually sit down to start your homework, the preliminary step is to read over the material and understand the requirements. By focusing on what is needed—clarifying work that has been given and setting concrete goals for the completion of that work—the student is well on the way to effective time management in getting the work successfully completed in a timely fashion. And the students who are able to complete their work effectively—we might even say efficiently—will be more open to opportunities for intellectual and personal growth because they’ll have more engaged, active minds when it really counts, during the school day.
5. Write your answer. Once you have made the plan, you will find it becomes much easier to write your answer because you know what you want to say. Make sure to follow the plan but if you think of something else that you can write about, don’t be afraid to add it into the answer. Because, it is simply a guide to keep you on the right track.
4. Make a plan. Start shaping up the jumble of ideas into a structured, more detailed plan. You might want to number the key things that you have listed down. It is also important to write something relevant around the key things in the plan so that you won’t forget what is on your mind. Remember to group similar things together and if necessary, include a brief introduction and conclusion at the beginning and end of your plan.
3. Brainstorm your ideas. You should think about things that are related to the question and then you can start to list possible things that you can talk about on the key terms list. For a question like the previous example, I will think about what I want to describe. As soon as you think of something that might be relevant to the question, make sure to write it down. Do not worry if you put similar things on the list, you can always group them together later. Always make sure to leave plenty of space because you may have additional ideas later on.
2. Make a key terms list. What I do next is to create a key terms list page in my homework book and write down the key words before starting to plan. With the previous example, I will write “describe: key things” in the list first. This step will help you remember the key terms throughout the planning and so that you keep the answer relevant to the question. I think this is very useful for subjects like English and history.
1. Read the question and highlight the key words. There are always important words that tell you what to do in the homework. And I always make sure to highlight these words. For example, if the question asks me to describe, I will highlight that word and try to look for the key things that I can describe. This will make you stay focused and you won’t feel overwhelmed. Besides, it is much easier to think about what you write and generate ideas. However, always make sure to highlight only the key words, not the whole question.
The first important aspect in improving the quality of your homework solutions is effective organization. Here are the five steps that you should go through:
In every homework, students need to gather information, on top of working out the problems. Information can be gathered by studying the text or asking for further information from the lecturer in order to understand the questions. It is important to read any extra information given with the question, to know the aim of the homework. At times, it would be more useful to have studied the solution first and then look at the end of chapter exercises. In today’s environment, there are numerous resources available to you to conduct your research. Books, scientific journals, reports and even the internet can provide helpful information about the area that you are studying. However, one of the most important resources that you could use is the information given to you in lectures. That is because you can be sure that the information is not only relevant and accurate but that it is given by reputable academics in their respective fields. As we all have different ways of learning and understanding a concept, no method is particularly better than the other. Some students may find it beneficial to read up on the topic first from a book or the internet, then to look at the solution and attempt the questions given. Others may prefer to just get on with the homework and look at the solution for guidance later. Another way to gather information is to discuss your work with a fellow peer. It would be helpful especially if you are doubtful or have different opinions on how the question should be tackled. By engaging in a discussion, it will eventually lead you to the most appropriate solution that you are all satisfied with, although the process might take longer. Also, it is a positive way of identifying if you have any misconceptions about a particular topic and to see what others think of a certain suggestion. However, avoid spending too much time getting the views of others as it is your homework that you need to complete and the overall message would be lost if you have too many different opinions in the answer. Nowadays, students are encouraged to use a range of resources including the internet and by following online links. It is an excellent way to have access to global and up-to-date information and the student is developing the necessary skills for the modern age. However, teaching staff would advise that the internet should be used critically. While vast amount of information can be found, it is important to seek information from reputable sources such as government publications and respected industry reports. Information that has not been updated or recently checked could have a major impact on the findings and it’s worth noting that sometimes information on the internet may not be entirely accurate. Also, teaching staff would urge the students not to copy and paste information straight from the internet where students should try to provide the knowledge using their own words, supported by relevant reference to the online material that has been used.
Crafting clear and concise answers enables your readers to understand what you are trying to convey. It also helps them save time and get to the information which is important to them. The first thing you need to do is read each question or topic sentence carefully. Many students start writing before they have finished reading or understanding what is actually expected. Then, plan your answer. The most important thing is to avoid writing irrelevant information in your answers. Plan your paragraphs. Every paragraph in your answer should have a main idea or a main topic. Start the paragraph with a topic sentence. The topic sentence is a sentence that gives the reader an outline of what the paragraph will be about. It should be used for every single paragraph for you to achieve the clear and concise standard. Then, ensure that every sentence has a purpose. Use connectives to link your sentences. Overly long sentences tend to be confusing. Short sentences which follow one after the other can create a sense of drama or quick action. Learn to use a full stop. Then, begin your answer with the main point. Follow each sentence with the next important point linked to the main idea. Last but not least, students should conclude and summarize their answers. However, the conclusion should just be a re-statement of the introduction, whilst the summary should neatly wrap up what had been discussed in the main body and demonstrate an overall appreciation of the topic. Your conclusion should be arrived at logically by considering what has been said in the main body and should leave the reader with a feel of what the topic is all about. A good conclusion will demonstrate an appreciation of the topic, an awareness of the limitations in your method or line of argument and originality in your synthesis of ideas.
“Reviewing and editing your solutions is a crucial step in the homework process. Before submitting your work, take a moment to check for grammatical and factual errors. You can start by reviewing the questions and instructions of the assignment as well as the main concepts discussed in your notes. By doing this, you can ensure that you have responded to the question effectively and that your work is well-focused. Do not forget to review the individual sections of your work as well. This way, you can make sure that each section has a clear purpose and that there is a logical sequence to the work. As you read, look for issues such as sloppy spelling and grammar, false or irrelevant material and big blocks of text. If you find any mistakes, pause and make the corrections – it is always best to correct mistakes when you find them, rather than having to go back and make lots of changes at the end. Once you have reviewed and made changes to your work, it is essential that you read over your work again very carefully before you submit it. Check that you have answered the question, your work is well-organised and that there are no glaring mistakes in it. A well-structured and error-free report or essay is not only easier to mark, but it will also help you get a better grade. By taking the time to go over your work, you can have the confidence that you are submitting your best work and have maximised your chances of getting a good grade.”
