Why I Deserve This Scholarship

1. Introduction

I would be so grateful and thankful if I were to receive a scholarship because it would make a significant impact on my educational goals. Use ‘no more than’ 200 words to state how you plan to use your scholarship and include any information that explains why you would be a good candidate. My educational and professional goals are very important to me and I have worked very hard to reach them. By earning a degree in Paralegal studies, I will be able to go further in my legal field and also better serve the public. Earning the degree will open so many doors for me and give me more opportunities for my future. This scholarship can help me afford the cost of this degree and I can do so without having to worry about taking out more school loans. Taking out additional loans would only create a bigger financial burden for me and this scholarship can definitely alleviate any added stress. Going back to school can be a tough decision and a lifestyle change for anybody that has been out of the school system for a number of years. This will be a lifestyle change for me as I have just become a new mother. A degree in Paralegal Studies can also open more work opportunities that can be more family friendly.

2. Academic Achievements

I have remained an honor student on the Dean’s List at Temple University. I have also received a merit scholarship for being one of the top students in the Fox School of Business at Temple University. I have constantly scored higher than a 3.0 in my coursework, guaranteeing that I would remain on the Dean’s List throughout my college career. I have single-handedly accomplished getting myself through college without any debt, not loans, and not from my parents. I have worked in restaurants and bars since I was 16 years old, full-time through my college career, enabling my sole financial support to come from that. My GPA was not the only means of continual success in my academic career at Temple University. This past year, I have begun doing research and working hands-on with a doctor and 8 students researching the relationship between alpha brain wave blocking and the recalling of memory. I have learned and accomplished an unbelievable amount in only 9 months of research. I have become quite familiar with brainwave reading hardware and am competent in knowing the areas and specific functions of the brain. I have contributed to finding the effects of binaural audio on individuals’ concentration and mood in three different research sessions. This research has given me the beginning of an invaluable experience. I plan to use my brainwave studies and eventually meld them with my personal financial business to create my niche.

3. Leadership and Extracurricular Activities

During high school, I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. I was a part of making a change in my community and society. Throughout my high school years, I have been involved in great organizations such as Volunteer Houston, National Honor Society, Key Club, or even an organization at my temple, Bnei Ruven. I have taken leadership positions in my temple youth group by being a Sergeant of Arms, 11th grade VP, and now President of Bnei Ruven this year. I have also recently received an award at the 8th grade MOSAIC graduation for being an excellent participant and having the most community service hours. This shows that I have always been involved in my community and school with a hands-on effort in making a change. The experiences have helped me develop my leadership style and skills. I have taught BBYO members how to run icebreakers and lead discussions, which are things I learned from MOSAIC and have implemented regularly. Now that I am President, my responsibilities have increased and I have lots to learn, but I feel the experiences I gain and the difference I make will be very beneficial.

4. Financial Need

I am in need of financial assistance in order to attend college because I am a low-income student. I am the 1st child to attend the college. Although my parents gave me many supports, I received a limited financial assistance due to low family income. To reduce family burden, I took out student loans to pay for my tuitions. Meanwhile, I am working 19 hours per week on campus to support myself. However, with the increasing tuitions this year, I am facing more challenges on financial need. As a junior at the University of Kentucky, I have faced many obstacles, yet I have stayed persistent. My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 and my father has suffered from prostate cancer. Due to my situation I was not able to relax to absorb the environment that I was in. They had to drive back and forth from Pike County to the clinic many times while under a great deal of stress, and it did not help that the doctors were not very specific as to what each treatment would do for him. My family and I are not able to afford me going to college so I have been doing everything I can to pay for it.

5. Conclusion

I know that I am motivated and have the potential to achieve my goal. I will make an impact on this world and help those in need. This scholarship is a step closer to what I have been wanting to do with my life. I have always been an ambitious student from the beginning. I was born in Biloxi, MS and raised for 2 years in Louisiana. My family and I relocated to Houston, TX after the devastating event of Hurricane Katrina. I attended lower-income schools, which in result caused me to transfer schools various times. Although this wasn’t the best situation, it had taught me to be more adaptable and open to new experiences. The situation with my education expectedly resulted with me entering Houston Academy of International Studies. This school is significant to me as it had shaped me to who I am today and for the future. I took on the challenge and rigor of the IB program for six years. Over these years, I have built relationships with the faculty who have always supported me in any endeavor. I partook in countless activities during and after school which have helped me to become a more well-rounded person and student. This includes band, community service organizations, and city club swim teams where I help coach young teenagers with impediments. In addition to this, I had also found opportunities in which I would gain some temporary job experience. With all of this on my plate, I still managed to carry out all the requirements of the IB program and cross the finish line with my diploma. Now I am preparing myself for my greatest challenge of attending college.
