Why I Deserve This Scholarship

1. Introduction

This scholarship would allow me to work less and focus more on my school work. I strive for nothing less than the best and bettering myself on a daily basis. School does not come easy for me. I have to put in the effort, time, and the best quality work in order to achieve the grades I strive for. Due to this, I have not been able to work as much and be as independent as I would like to be. I have been sophomore, junior, and senior class president at my high school. I also played a leadership role in Dance Troupe, where we performed for our school’s student body and at school events. Now I believe it is my turn to be a leader in college. This scholarship will be a learning experience and I believe I can lead others to immerse themselves in activities such as those that I had the benefit of joining. This would make for an even more valuable college experience for not only myself, but for my peers as well. High school and college have already been preparing me for my career and I would like to take a step towards being a dental hygienist for children. I have volunteered at the Stanislaus County Library, Children’s Miracle Network, The Modesto Marathon, and donated to Locks of Love. Volunteering has opened up my mind knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life and to never give up. Thank you for this opportunity.

2. Academic Achievements

With my achievements in academics, it is evidence that I can be considered as a good candidate for a recipient of a scholarship.

5. GPA and Study Duration Award in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra for completing my study in 3 ½ years (within the normal duration).

4. Special awards gifted scholarship from the University of Twente, Netherlands; obtained by the student with the best achievements in academics (GPA) and organization as well in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of North Sumatra.

3. Winning 1st place in the student writing competition at the Faculty of Geography UGM for the National Seminar and Workshop on Disaster and Global Changes “Thinking Critically on Disaster and Global Changes Recent in Developing Countries in the World” (2012). The paper I wrote is entitled The Role of Local Wisdom in Efforts to Overcome the Impact of the Eruption Disaster Mount Merapi Yogyakarta.

2. Winning the student writing competition 4th SUCCEED!5 “Student Competition on Creating Innovative Social Development” in North Sumatra (2011). My paper is entitled Application of Informal Education in Creating a Creative Generation in a Small District in North Sumatra.

1. Winning 2nd place in Bachelor Degree level Final Project Competition Proceedings VIII Congress Regional of Indian Geographic Information (2009) in North Sumatra. The title of my bachelor thesis is GIS for monitoring the growth and development of a small district in the urban fringe, North Sumatra.

My academic achievements are evidence that I am a dedicated student. My achievement in academics has brought me several awards:

3. Financial Need

I am in need of financial assistance in order to attend college because I am a low-income student. I am the first child to attend the college. Although my parents gave me many supports, I received a limited financial assistance due to low family income. To reduce family burden, I took out student loans to pay for my tuitions. I have lived with only what I earned. With the cost of living continually rising, and with the price of tuition going up each year, it has been very difficult to save money and pay for tuition. After working part-time jobs for two years, I was able to have an ample amount of money saved and I began to notice my parents spending money on little things. I realized that they were unwilling to talk to me about their financial situation, so as to not burden me. So, I initiated a conversation with them about financing my college education. The fact that my father is a business leader keeps the family on the move and only in one location for a few years at a time, has not allowed for the family to build up much wealth. It was in the year 2004, when my father was diagnosed with an extremely rare case of blood cancer. With a second family back in Liberia, things were once again difficult. A once small savings was depleted into large and costly medical bill. Blood transfusions for six months, chemotherapy and radiation, all having been extremely expensive were noted as some of the leading factors to health care cost today. Now dad’s job and income lack much too. Coming into remission days before the Tsunami in 2006, parents only lucked out losing grandma’s car that was towed to a shut down airport. With this scholarship and the need-based grants I have been awarded, I can complete my education and continue to solve problems within my community. With these plans I will achieve something of utmost value to me, something for which I have worked very hard and long to be a part of. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

4. Leadership and Extracurricular Activities

During my high school, I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities. These activities helped me develop my leadership skills. One of the highlights of my high school career was the summer I spent away from home at the Tennessee Governors School for the Sciences. The most exciting part was that I was recommended by my chemistry teacher to attend this session. This program offered an accelerated curriculum that covered two semesters’ worth of material in six weeks. The course of study was based on college-level freshman chemistry. Students attending this session got the opportunity to take lectures and labs, but I was the only one who learned both. I always find college-level courses should be challenging, but it’s not as hard as the time when I explain what I’ve learned to my friends back in my high school. The hardest part was to design my own procedure and create something to solve the given problem. I was assigned to create a product for Kangaroo Paw Car Company that could cover the dent on a plastic bumper. Since our group didn’t have enough funds to purchase raw materials, the only way was to ‘steal’ the material from the juice company just beside our lab. We worked overnight using a stove, cooking pot, and the material we ‘stole’ just to create a malleable plastic to cover the given procedure. And the result is a qualified, successful, and effective product. At the end of the session, I was selected to present the highlight of the project in front of all four hundred students with only three other representatives from different classes. And I also won the regional ASEAN scholar, which is one of the breakthroughs for my family. Besides academics, I also joined a couple of clubs such as the uniform unit (military cadet), Red Crescent, and rugby group. I was appointed as a staff in Red Crescent and led them to win some attractive awards. I was also the rugby representative for my school. All of my experiences there have shown a lot of good leadership characteristics in me, and the evidence is when in the last project of the program, I was appointed by all the student representatives to negotiate with the college administration to take back the blender that was confiscated because we used it to crush ice for the party.

5. Conclusion

This essay should explain why you do or do not qualify for the award. Your personal understanding, opinion, and ability, whether based on facts or not, will need to stand out and be discussed. The essay needs to showcase your abilities to work diligently and think critically, and to reflect on what and why things have happened. To reflect on the past and plan for the future is a big part of whether change will be successful, and this essay should state why. This essay is targeted specifically for JASS students who are in unstable situations. I know that I am not the only person with a story like this. If I am awarded the scholarship, I want to help other students in situations similar to mine. The cycle is ongoing, and though some may say that it’s a lost cause, I firmly believe that it is not. Changing the future will require several tries and learning from trial and error. I believe that with my experiences and my students, we can now plant the seeds of success.

Try to envision a future where no man, woman, or child will ever have to say, “I need to ask for help because my family is in a crisis.” The saying “telling others is just like telling yourself” is true because when you spread the word on someone or something, the word spreads like wildfire. This scholarship will become a turning point in my family’s crisis. I have been helping my family and others for most of my life. At this point, the only way my family can stop these crises from occurring is by changing the way they do things. This scholarship will greatly influence those changes. This scholarship will remove a heavy burden from my shoulders and point my life in a productive direction. This scholarship will only make me that much more determined to show others what the power of change can accomplish. This scholarship is a big opportunity for me, and I feel that I definitely merit consideration for it.
