1. Introduction

I need this scholarship. I need it to help pay for my education. I want to become a nurse so that I can leave an impact in this world and help those who are unable to help themselves. I have a heart for helping people and I absolutely love caring for them. I am the type of person who will put my needs last if it means the needs of others can be met. Money has always been a stressor in my family’s life and has certainly influenced my educational goals. I knew that if I really wanted to succeed and get an education I would have to work extremely hard for it and find a way to fund it myself. I have been working since I was 15 and have been putting myself out there to find options of how I can fund my schooling. It wasn’t until this last year that I figured out that I wanted to be a nurse. With that decision, I found that there were many options to help fund my education! This scholarship would be an absolute amazing opportunity to situate me where I want to be in life as well as give many options to pursue my dream.

2. Academic Excellence

When it comes to leadership, I am the eldest in a family of five boys. As the oldest sibling, I am often posed as an example when my parents are at work. This requires me to often show leadership and maturity to my younger brothers. I am a creative, intelligent individual that has a certain charisma about myself. This draws me to positions of leadership, as people often see me as a person who is able to take charge and get things done. I am never afraid of taking on a task simply because it appears to be difficult. In fact, I am drawn to those types of tasks. I always have to be at my best, regardless of the situation. Whether it’s working out or playing sports, I present a high level of energy in everything that I do; over the years I subconsciously adopted the spirit of competition. This has led to endeavors that have opened various leadership opportunities for me. An example of this would be my acceptance into NOVA’s Plumbing Program. This was a rigorous course that required a significant amount of time and dedication. The admission process was very competitive and only the top twenty applicants were chosen for the program. During this time frame my work schedule was also flipped from night shift to day shift, causing me to have to adapt and function on less sleep. During my time in the Plumbing Program, I learned a lot about the field and what plumbers do. I found that the work of a plumber is actually very complex and often goes unappreciated. It was a humbling experience for me as I often found that some of these plumbers were the unsung heroes of a lot of establishments. This experience has given me a wider understanding and view of what I want to do when I enter the work field. It allowed me to grow in adversity, learn at front a trade that I did not know anything about coming in, and even impart knowledge on some of those who were struggling to understand the material. Even now I am looked at as a leader in the plumbing program, my insight has led me to tutor other classmates in various subjects that would have otherwise been difficult for them. It is because of this leadership persona that I will be taking everything that I learned and my certification to test and work as an apprentice residential or journeyman plumber while I complete my business administration degree at Mason. During that time, I am committed to continue my education and finish up a Master Plumber License that will eventually allow me to meet the long term goal of opening my own successful plumbing business. Given the skill set that I have and my persuasive communication, perseverance and work ethic, I am certain that I can make a name for myself as a plumber and open up opportunities for myself and others like me who are looking for a viable and successful trade.

4. Financial Need

My family can’t afford to pay for my entire education, so I hope to use my skills and love of animals to help me pay for college. I plan to major in animal science (veterinary medicine) and minor in equestrian studies. Throughout high school, I have been involved in much veterinary work through volunteering and job shadowing practice. I have acquired over 300 vet hours around many different animal clinics. This includes the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, NJ, the Rainbow Equine Hospital in Newburg, NY, and the West Essex Veterinary Clinic in Caldwell, NJ. I have also held a steady job at a local animal clinic in Parsippany, NJ. I receive minimum wage pay, but the doctor has taught me an infinite amount of information and skills that I can take on with me through the rest of my life. In the end, the payment is worth much less than the knowledge I have acquired. In college, I plan to work part time at an animal clinic also, and I feel finding a scholarship for my efforts and goals in veterinary medicine will help pay for my schooling. This will hopefully help my parents pay off my tuition and loans for the next four years. An animal clinic will be a good work environment for me, and will help benefit me in future skills and job opportunities. This would reduce any sag in my career or knowledge and would help give me experience for my future veterinarian occupation. With the continuation over summer breaks, this job can also help pay for my college loans and tuition. This will be a big weight off my parents, and I hope to prove to them that I can someday become a great veterinarian and can pay off my own for my education.

Just remember to be confident, think positive and never give up; difficult things take time, impossible things take a little longer. Being born from a family with financial problems, I can’t consider continuing my study to university. But my spirit to learn is not only to satisfy my mind, get a better job, or have a better life.
