why do i deserve a scholarship essay
Why I Deserve a Scholarship
My name is Jina Abercrombie and I am here for some more information on why I feel I am worthy of a scholarship to attend UAL. After meeting with the admissions department and interviewing a current student, I have really been able to picture myself at the university and in the graphic design program. UAL has a great connection with several well-known design companies and I think because of the location there are endless opportunities for internships and job placement. One thing that really got me excited was when the student I interviewed explained how they have a summer project and they place you with a design firm based on where you want to go and what you want to do. He ended up going to Paris for a summer! One of the main reasons I want to attend UAL is for the location. London is such a diverse city and I think living there would be a great growing experience for me. Since I do not have previous experience in design, I am looking to grow in all areas and I think living in a city with so much creativity and ingenuity would be a really beneficial environment. I am taking a big jump moving from Florida to Europe but I think in doing so there will be something that I can take away from it and apply to my work in the future.
I have had many achievements in my life so far. At my primary school, I achieved Student of the Year. I then moved on to high school, where I achieved two years Student of the Year, top of the year English (2016), Student’s Choice Award for most respected student (2017), and one of the proudest achievements, Trombone Player of the Year in front of an audience of over 200 people at the prestigious Queenstown Jazz Festival. All of these achievements are a testament to my work ethic and my understanding of what it takes to become a successful individual. But the most important aspect of my academic life is how I have managed to achieve excellence in all of my subjects. Through my three years at Wakatipu High School, I have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge, and I have always managed to remain at the top of the class. My greatest achievement in high school was when I passed NCEA Level 1 with Excellence. This was proof of years of hard work, showing that I have what it takes to achieve a high level of education. Now, in my gap year, and studying online to achieve a qualification in Exercise and Sports Science, I have completed all of my internal and external assessments so far with excellent marks. These achievements have only furthered my self-belief and desire to achieve more in my life.
During my high school, I have participated in many great extracurricular activities. When I was a freshman, I was introduced to a program called Upward Bound. Upward Bound is a program that gives first-generation students the opportunity to experience college life through workshops and classes. As a sophomore and junior, I was an active member of the Latin Club. I decided to join the Latin Club because I wanted to learn more about the Latin language and its culture. During the two years of being in the Latin Club, I wrestled with the idea of taking Latin as a foreign language. It wasn’t until my junior year when my school made Latin a foreign language class. I was excited and ready to sign up for the class, only to have my hopes dashed. The Latin class was unique to my school, but the curriculum was not sanctioned by the district and the class was canceled. It was devastating, but I decided to pursue it on my own. As a senior, I decided to join Interact because I wanted to start giving back to the community. I was always casually involved in community service, but I decided to make it official in my last year in high school. Interact is a club that is heavily involved in community service. In my first year in Interact, I joined and we did a lot of amazing work at a retirement home. Between my extracurricular activities and community service, I’ve always been involved in leadership. Coming from a family of leaders, it was only natural that I developed leadership skills and became the individual that I am now.
When I was young, my brother had a terrible accident, and almost immediately after, my father was laid off. This put us in an incredibly tough spot, and I can remember how stressed my parents were about where they were going to come up with the money to afford the medical bills, let alone keep a roof over our heads. At 10 years old, I couldn’t do much to help out, and my mother had to temporarily put her career on hold to stay at home and take care of my brother. Being the only one to work, my father has it the toughest. His work required lots of traveling and working out of state, and due to conflicts with my mother not being able to always single parent us 3 kids, him having to quit his recent job in California put a big halt on financial progress for my family. Even with a new job at hand, it has been difficult for my family to come up with the same type of revenue. This has been tough for all of us, as my father is unable to attend many of my brother’s basketball games, my sister’s dance recitals, and it’s even harder for him to visit me. The bond with my family has always been tight, and this drop in income is one that has made it difficult for us to do things together. I refuse to see this escalate further, I do not want my father to continue working excessively past the retirement age. As hardworking as he is, my father has done more than enough for our family, and it is my turn to help him, fully supporting myself through college.
I am convinced that I deserve this scholarship for many reasons. I have worked hard, not only in my academic career, but in all the other activities I am involved in. I have done my best, and I constantly strive to be the best. The promising future that I see for myself is also another strong factor. Coming from a family that has had to work hard for what they have, I understand the hard work that lies ahead of me should I be able to complete my college education. I want more than anything to make my parents proud, for all the sacrifices they have made to provide for me. Finally, I feel that I deserve this scholarship because I am a strong leader and example-setter. I am a good role model and I like influencing children for the better. I intend to continue being a leader and example-setter for the rest of my life, hopefully one day helming successful volleyball teams and coaching 16-and-under clubs. I feel that I am someone who can be trusted and counted on to do what is right, and I never have been and never will be someone to settle for second best. This scholarship money would help me better both myself and my future, as I better those around me. I appreciate your time in reading my application and considering me for this scholarship.
