1. Introduction to Laboratory Reports

Willingness To Participate: One of the key components in the assessment of a laboratory report is the introduction portion. If the introduction is thorough and the student has a proper understanding of the principles that are being applied, a good working foundation is easily gained and then translated into their own work or understanding. The determination of a density of substance, the heat of fusion of ice, the molecular weight of a volatile solid and the heat of a phase change were the conclusions that students of mine came to participate in the last two weeks of the lab. The problem is, these concepts are relatively simple compared to some other portions of the data.

The role of a laboratory report is to convey the findings of a lab exercise to the reader. As this is typically done after the fact, the art of the laboratory report is to describe the events of the lab experiment in terms that the reader can understand. In this communication, I will relate my strategies on how to write a laboratory report effectively. I have four strategies that I suggest you consider. The first involves the introduction of the report, the second is how to prepare and present primary and secondary research. The third involves disclosing and including the meaning and identifying and being authoritative within the communication while the last strategy is to go for authority in writing.

2. Key Components of a Laboratory Report

Title – Description of the experiment, semester, and year. Include a brief description of the experiment in addition to its goals and listing of major topics or events. The semester and year should suggest the time span related to the lab’s performance. The title of the report should be descriptive and easy to understand quickly. The title does not have to be elaborate, but it should clearly convey the independent variables, dependent variables, and the functional context of the experiments. Avoid using words that may lead to confusion; for example, variance suggested meaning in the statistical area but unexpected results in the actual context of the experiment.

The purpose of writing a lab report is to effectively communicate the results of an experiment, based on inference and observation. The report should clearly explain the experiment’s goals and the obtained results and provide thorough insight into the significance, meaning, and actual applicability of the work. Effective communicative skills in writing are required to relay these important messages. Adhering to these guidelines will enable good performance on the part of an author and uninterrupted comprehension for the readers of their work.

3. Writing Style and Formatting Guidelines

After, your introduction should lead to a discussion section which shows the importance of your results and contrasts them with previously conducted research. Then your report should continue with a complete lettered outline of the equipment used in your experiment so that readers can duplicate the process if desired. After this equipment outline, you should provide a concise brief of the experimental process with specifics on unique variables that were motivated by the research’s objectives. The content in this section should be enough to enable another laboratory to replicate what was done in your experiment.

4. Analyzing and Presenting Data

Even with Microsoft Excel to assist you in data manipulation and graphic display, creating effective visual displays is problematic. But careful attention is important; no one can understand all the details of your work without them. It should be said that graphics, like written text, can be poorly prepared and difficult to understand, and can undermine the quality of your report. Even worse, there are many techniques that can be misused to “lie” with the data. The relationships among the sources of your data can be complex and easily distorted, and you have the responsibility to ensure that the way the data is displayed does not lead others entirely or partially away from the factual messages that your data truly reveal.

After you’ve written your report, preparing an effective graphic display of your data will provide another opportunity for high-level writing and organization of your thoughts. To preview a significant underlying issue: Drafting good scientific figures can represent about 50 percent of the work in presenting your data, and is by far the most time-consuming element of preparing a scientific report. Because the processes involved are so critical for good communication, the difficulty of graphic presentation is well worth the time you will invest.

5. Conclusions and Recommendations

This study has presented four significant areas which require improvement. We recommend that further research be undertaken within the following four descriptive themes: exploring unfamiliar experimental work, rubric and laboratory manual requirements, exposure to the related science information where the scenario of the experimental work should have a direct link to their academic performance, and addressing the concerns and challenges in distance learning scenarios. The specific areas presented indicate the potential for focusing on educational practice and the improvement of laboratory report writing. If these recommendations are pursued, both the lecturers’ and the students’ level of involvement in science will likely lead to a deeper understanding of the learning processes involved.

5.2 Recommendations for Further Research

The study has established that clear rubrics and detailed explanations in the laboratory manuals, coupled with students’ involvement during class discussions in group activities, would help clarify their doubts over their understanding of the required components. Through the students’ induction and exposure to the scientific aspects in the experiment and discussions in the science class, students were able to produce better laboratory reports. Lecturer and peer involvement also played a crucial role in providing constructive feedback. The findings reveal that insufficient information related to the components in both the laboratory manual and rubrics does affect the students’ performance. At the same time, the use of a virtual platform for distance learning requires suitable strategies to address the students’ understanding of the content knowledge acquired from the environment, processes, and scientific aspects where the students can explore the science behind the basic ideas independently.

Laboratory report writing tasks are different from the other academic writing tasks and generally do not require the same formatting and language features, such as scientifically accurate language and the use of passive voice to eliminate the agent of action. However, students often struggle with writing laboratory reports and seem to experience difficulty in understanding what is required of them. This study sought the contributions of both the students and lecturers in the development of comprehensive and insightful laboratory reports in a Foundation Program Biology subject in one institution of higher learning in Brunei Darussalam. The understanding of the student expectations related to writing a laboratory report is fundamental for positive learning and achieving better results.

5.1 Conclusion

This chapter encapsulates the study and presents a brief reflection of the main aim and objectives. The concluding chapter also offers a summary of the main issues and findings, a discussion of the implications of these findings, and recommendations for further research.
