1. Introduction: The Importance of Studying Historical Events

While it is helpful to look to the past as a guide to understand the present and to assist with the process of planning for the future, the future holds new adventures, with technology expanding our daily lives and boundaries. Unfortunately, this positive advance does not address the many challenges we continue to encounter, such as clean drinking water, food security, global warming, war, and pestilence. Indeed, the study of history helps deliver individual and social awareness and directs the development of the right tools. This will hold true no matter what the field of our life may be. While history, much like a crystal ball, cannot predict our future, it provides insight into how the past has shaped people and nations, including why and how this has occurred. Through an understanding of the past, views of the future may be expanded or limited. But, most importantly, the future can be a place where one can avoid repeating past mistakes.

The study of historical events allows for a clearer understanding of present issues. It also helps people avoid creating those problems we are currently dealing with. At times, we have used materials with information on significant events in history for current planning to ensure we are not repeating mistakes and to ensure our current client does not feel slighted by any proposals made. It also has helped to humanize current events in the news. While these things can be important, history being what it is provides very few occasions for photos and firsthand experience of significant events. So, why spend time looking back at significant events in the course of history? Initially, by examining humans’ past actions, we can come much closer to understanding why things are today as they are. Second, it goes without saying that historical events have had significant impacts on the present. And, while some believe that historical events are purely academic, in retrospect, history has affected and continues to affect the course of the people living in the past, present, and future. It is for these reasons that historical information is used in the study of geology periods and plate tectonic history to predict future activity to prepare for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.

2. Key Events in History and Their Global Impact

Within the passing of time, world history is peppered with political, philosophical, social, and ideological events of such significance that we not only feel confident in ascribing to some of these dates the shaping of history significantly but also in asserting that the outcomes of some events were such that they have had a pervasive and lasting impact on societies, not only at that point in time but also in the lifespan of the societies that came into existence long after the event. Indeed, is it not truly amazing to reflect that from a universe dominated in essence by the period of the birth, life, and death of religion, a point in time whose truth values would not, for reasons beyond our control and comprehension, be contentious, a terrible bifurcation took place in the Western world that would shape Western society to this day and again perhaps until the end of days? Would the men and women at the turn of the first millennium have had the strength, initiative, and fortitude had they been aware of such diverging paths to travel down another road? Or in the fulsome context of world histories, was that fateful attraction to separate clearly endemic to the Western foundation at that point in time?

We can point to specific events in world history as significant and life-altering. For instance, there is Chapter 1, Verse 27 in the Book of Genesis in the Bible that reports on the construction of the Tower of Babel and indeed its repercussions for the peoples of the world at that time. It seems that this event not only changed the lives of the people concerned but also the distribution of languages spoken. We can and do point to other events in the passing of time that have shaped the world, particularly events of the last several centuries that told on the lives of the people who provoked said incidents and also on the vast majority of the population whose feelings and needs and lives and livelihood were greatly influenced by the events that are conventionally styled as “world” events.

3. Lessons Learned from Historical Events

We have learned, especially here in the 1980s and early 1990s, and together with some 75 prior positive lessons of history on the components of a country’s stock of long-term physical productive assets; and even most notably, index annuity investments and Japanese experiences, during the last 10 to 12 years, how to accumulate and properly maintain over the longer term, our private short and long-term physical productive assets and our human investments. This occurs when a country’s economy is following one of the classic long-term economic expansion cycles (It is my view that the money supply follows these classic cycles fifteen to eighteen months after or after the actual beginning of the long-term economic cycle). Only six or seven economies have that continuous economic resoluteness and financial burdensomeness to maintain 6.5 to 7.0 percent of their publicly taxed-supported gross aggregate demand for four entire years, together with some disciplined tax policies, correlated with MS + CPI, alongside 3.0 to 3.5 percent of privately taxed-supported in demand, and there are zero countries that have a supply policy with a connect to aggregate demand.

We learn a lot from mistakes, which is also true in learning about significant events in history. The phrase “to err is human; one the personizers of the word; one whose last teachings were ‘forgiveness is divine; and all else is human.'” is apropos. We have seen some mistakes in history. A few are: leaning economies forward without understanding that added buying power creates supply to meet the big becomes little and then an eventual crisis in supply; not understanding that the world itself, as we are witnessing, becomes more fragile correlatively with increased mobility and population; ethnocentrism and impunity; regarding war and peace and monetary policies; a great, learned and now deceased economic mentor of mine, Congressman Wright Patman, made the following remarks concerning the monetary policies as set during the last 10 years. Political pressure groups are always doing this.

4. Controversial Events in History and Their Relevance Today

It is important to bear in mind that most ICAO member states attach great significance and political priority to their respective candidate winning an election, where a variety of interests determine member state manoeuvring around running for and securing positions. Some of these interests may not always be related to the provision of technical expertise by the individuals concerned, but rather to the various kinds of support and promises for support the member states are able to offer and are offering to secure support for the election of their candidate. These non-technical interests and the extent to which elected directors are able to maintain independence from those who have supported their election give rise to concerns on the ability of all member states to approve decisions taken at that level. It questions as to whether the emphasis on concepts such as consensus and leadership ensures that the best possible decisions are being made in the interest of the entire international civil aviation community.

It may be argued that decisions made on behalf of members may not always reflect their interests accurately, since their objectives are not necessarily those associated with mere survival or growth. In this case, members will find it increasingly hard to identify with a group’s decision and its authority may become problematic. This is visible in board elections, where concerns have been raised regarding the lack of legitimacy that boards may have to make decisions on behalf of members, especially when some states or regions of the world are not properly, or at all, represented by some of the elected directors, since the major principles for these elections are based on equality of states, one state one vote. These concerns reflect questions raised by the membership of ICAO and non-member states about the extent to which those who occupy director positions on the council truly represent and understand the collective interest of all contracting states and take into account non-member state interests.

5. The Role of History in Shaping the Future

History is a necessary discipline. When we study the course of events that have occurred in the past, we attempt to learn from the actions of humans who have come before us. By doing so, we attempt to benefit from human progress and urge to avoid repeating the mistakes that our predecessors have made. Moreover, we use history as a discipline to understand who we are as a human race and how we have fashioned the world around us. History books provide us with evidence of where we have been, and what situations and surroundings have contributed to our present state of organization. While it is all very nice to discuss with certainty our knowledge of the past, it is far more interesting to consider what impacts historical events have on our present and future lives. Specifically, what, if anything, does history define for the future?

Throughout history, profound events have impacted the way the world is shaped. For hundreds of thousands of years, humanity has been witness to the ebb and flow of the historical process. Generations upon generations have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, the birth and rebirth of ideas, and the shaping of what is the diverse world that we find today. Today, only remnants are often found that tell of tales from the past. Such relics include historical buildings, the remnants of societies, and texts which inform us about life in the past. Apart from these materials, however, we often lack reference points from the past. This is where the concept of history plays an important role. History describes the totality of events that have taken place in the past, informs us where we have been, and provides us with a roadmap to whom we are as people today.
