Types of Creative Writing

1. Introduction to Creative Writing

Overall, we aim to get people writing, no matter what the level or skill. This will be from simple task setting, allowing students to ask questions, what if scenarios, to other forms that will set more dramatic approaches and research into play. It is a fact that creative writing is one of the most imaginative and fulfilling ways of using English that is past, current, or future.

Creative writing also has many helpful benefits. It can help students in different ways of non-academic writing, creative and imaginative tasks, and can also improve persuasive and argument techniques. Other skills such as copywriting, plot development, and genre writing are also good skill sets to have. This may be very helpful for students still deciding a career. We feel that creative writing can work all 4 language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It is perhaps a more complete and complex way of learning a language.

Over the last 30 years, the definition has been broadened to include writing that is imaginative but is not strictly true. Journalism is not included under the creative writing umbrella. The focus of creative writing is not to explain, educate, and document, but to entertain and engage the reader. This does not mean that creative writing is only about fiction; it can be non-fiction as well. Poetry and song lyrics are also something that is quite closely connected to creative writing and is another art form that we feel is best documented in a written form.

There are many forms of writing, but one of the most interesting is creative writing. Creative writing is a distinct discipline in writing and is an art in its own right. It is writing done in a way that is not academic or technical but still attracts an audience. It may be fiction, poetry, or a type of creative non-fiction. Creative writing fosters the power of free writing at a minimum. However, creative writing needs to be approached in a scholarly manner and will sharpen critical thinking and scholarly expression.

2. Fiction Writing

Fiction writing is a type of written work that is invented or fabricated. In other words, fiction is anything not factual or it could be said that only the writer’s imagination is the limit of what can be achieved in fiction. Fiction writing most often takes the form of a story meant to convey an author’s point of view or simply to entertain. But what form the story may take, and the end it seeks to achieve, can vary greatly. Fiction writing can be written in prose or in poetry. Fictions may be in the form of fables, parables, tales or short stories. It may also take the form of a novel or drama. A novel usually has a comprehensive structure with characters, setting, plot, climax and resolution. While a drama is actually a story acted out, the play script may not serve as a complete instruction on how the drama is to be performed. Basically, fiction is divided into two types based on its purpose, which are commercial fiction and literary fiction. Commercial fiction is the kind of fiction that tries to get readers to buy or borrow from libraries often presented in the form of short stories and novels. The stories focus on entertainment and reader satisfaction. The literary work has deep meaning by using symbolic and allegorical episode. Usually, the quality of literary fiction is recognized through awards and essays.

3. Poetry Writing

Poetry is the expression of feelings, thoughts, and emotions. For one who has been touched by poetry, it is an art which can convey its message with the least amount of words. It is a vehicle through which human beings can speak to others on ideas which have touched them, and it is a medium which can crystallize an impression in the form of a thought. Poetry can be the fantastic escape from the hard and harsh realities of life. It can be the reflection of the times in which he is living. It then follows that if the writer is so imaginative, he wants to express – to give his feelings a form which is communicable. But he must always remember that a poem is an artistic creation and presents action or character, and emotions or ideas in a dramatic form. The most highly prized type of poetry is lyric; the poem is an utterance of the writer’s thoughts and feelings spoken to others: here he may write a new type of love song, a war sonnet, or an elegy. Epic poetry can be attempted; the narration of a story in verse form. And let us not forget satire or didactic verse. So, there are many forms of poetry which the creative writer may try.

4. Nonfiction Writing

Creative nonfiction writing can embody both personal and public history. It is a form that utilizes memory, experience, observation, opinion, and all kinds of research in an effort to communicate real-world meaning. Travel writing, food writing, personal journals, and letters, these are all forms of the memoir. Also included in this category would be a good portion of what writers call literary journalism. Here, the writer compiles on a well-known, often epic event and tells the story from a specific perspective. This subsection’s key purpose is to underscore research and the use of creative writing techniques in order to make the nonfiction nature. Another subdivision is a kind of nonfiction writing that undertakes to prove an idea: this is persuasive writing. An example of persuasive writing is the editorial, it aims to be objective and the reader is expected to form an opinion. The primary focus of persuasive writing is to convince an audience to form belief in something. This idea proving form of nonfiction writing also includes a researched argument essay, something that may start with a question or a problem that seeks a solution. This problem solution has the potential to become a full-length article or book. This idea proof form is also the basis of the academic paper and a number of mixed genre creations including the modern memoir and the history of the self.

5. Screenwriting

There are a variety of approaches to screenwriting. Professional writers attempting to break into the business may adapt a novel, true story, or stage play. An established film director may hire a screenwriter to develop a script around a pre-existing property. The idea is for the director to follow up a successful film with another of similar commercial potential. The very highly paid writers for film and television do not write on speculation, but rather they are employed to write new scripts or do a rewrite on an existing script.

Screenwriting involves quite a bit of retelling and drafting. Oftentimes, screenwriters go back and add things to the beginning of the script, which requires a change in the middle or the end. They must often appraise each scene in terms of dramatic structure, deciding whether it advances the plot and if there might be a more efficient way to accomplish the same result. Due to the collaborative nature of making a motion picture, the “who,” “what,” and “why” of screenwriting is continuously subjected to alteration. This is not always a bad thing, since other somewhat autonomous entities such as actors, cinematographers, and directors may contribute better ideas than the screenwriter. Adaptation of prose and other written work is also a somewhat common form of creative writing.

Screenwriting is writing done to produce a final script. The script can be for a feature film, a documentary, a television program, or a television commercial. These scripts can also be for live stage plays or musicals. Scripts are listed by scene heading, and within each scene, the location is listed in the slug line. Then the dialogue, shot, action, sound, and music are listed in separate blocks. Often, a scriptwriter will employ a variety of editing and formatting techniques to distinguish different aspects of the script.
