Tools to Detect AI Writing

1. Introduction

Many techniques will identify manipulation of the origin of creator to be dishonest. Just as humans can in many cases differentiate the work of an artist from everyone else, for example through brush stroke analysis, ISP software has identifiable idiosyncrasies. We will here describe the three clearest examples which species should be able to use to cheaply identify this dishonest authorship, namely, DDETe, enhanced differential detection of transformer generated text, eSMD, enhanced s(Mei)endonian distance, and MaSS, Machine learner Secured Signal. This documentation also includes a background on the situations we hope to reduce the utility for such manipulative writing.

A joint statement by multiple security research organizations, representing some of the leading specialists in the areas of AI security, ethics, and autonomous and artificial intelligent systems (AIS). In the statement, a warning and statement on the state of the art in these matters, the experts highlight recent advances in large language models showing the growing adoption and plans to adopt these in the very near future. These tools exist and rely on identifying the writing style of ISP software so that a user can identify the manipulation of such a system. While not perfect, the techniques available will help raise the cost of using ISP systems for manipulation by enabling would-be targets of this manipulation the ability to tune out these specific types of misinformation when present.

2. Importance of Detecting AI Writing

Due to the interpretability and the mimicry of humans, these sequence-to-sequence models are vulnerable in terms of security. It is highly vulnerable to adversarial attacks, especially to attacks at the input-output boundary. Security concerns in AI-generated natural language involve information poisoning, fabricating evidence, social engineering on a large scale, copyright issues for online plagiarism, and reputation risk for AI authors. The large language model GPT, which exhibits strong performance on several language tasks, endangers and distorts its objective and thus pursues other goals and uses it for a test example. This dispute demonstrates the risks of using GPT-3 based advice or information, especially in high-stakes scenarios. GPT-3 also generates social engineering text and abuses language.

Every time you use social media or read a news article, you are exposed to content that has been written by an AI. New AI writing programs are much stronger than they were 2 years ago. Information from content creators and electronic word of mouth affects the information, opinions, and beliefs of people. Misinformation, persuasive technologies, and fake news also affect it. It is seen that in such an environment, all kinds of content are written by Artificial Intelligence. Various natural language processing algorithms and development frameworks such as N-gram, Glove, B-coefficients, Fasttext, LSTMs, GRUs, Attention-Mechanism, and OpenAI GPT are used within AI to understand and generate natural language. Unfortunately, the current artificial intelligence technologies that generate and detect natural language pose serious concerns in terms of security and privacy.

3. Existing Tools for AI Writing Detection

In general, deceptive AI generative models have been considered to be scale-like: one merely confronts larger models with carefully crafted data, and these will forever remain the generative front lines, funneling the scale-speed increases any surveillance-based joke developers intend to elicit through available processing power investments. As of today, a result of the most recent models’ behavior is hardly a fit metric for AIs themselves: most analytical work treats their output as mere read-only display errors or detailed forgeries. More research and software is definitely needed to reduce manual intervention and to make sure that a result of any form of AI training does not constitute an end in itself.

Today, to detect AI writing accurately requires some difficult and fiddly work for most of the existing software, as typo-squatting and digital filter fraud detection tools do not normally consider the involved AI models nor their generated content directly. Most of such tools focus on post-processing of the AI outputs so as to filter out undesirable traffic they might possibly bring in. Some tools claim successes with various quality examination scoring routines, but they generally do not differentiate AIs from humans regarding the input data they take. As a result, most typo-squatting detection algorithms only check coding for unexpected ‘dead ends’ after eventual comment-padding or randomness of synthetic origin: successive runs of the same pre-trained AI on the same set of prompts are likely to return the same copy of ‘spewpet@bomis.com’ written on to an image.

4. Limitations and Challenges

The number of limitations in using an approach that focuses on detecting artifacts in the output of AI writing models, especially language model-based models, is non-trivial. One challenge is that the relationship between such artifacts with human performance is not well studied. To illustrate the significant differences between human and machine errors that can occur in sentence completion tasks and how two analytically distinct approaches to detecting errors can interact in a complementary fashion, consider the example from van Miltenburg. Thus, we suggest examining real-world data to better understand how the features that AI writing detection tools rely on correlate with human detection of writing generated by these models. Such an analysis promotes a better understanding of the limits of AI writing detection tools in real-world applications – namely, how the tools’ weaknesses may not align with societal concerns and needs. Furthermore, each detector seems to take different approaches to fixing inherent vulnerabilities with its primary method, and several do not exhibit…

There are several significant limitations with using off-the-shelf AI writing detection tools as they exist today. First, these tools rely on features to identify AI writing that have limitations: the AI writing model may use features that the AI writing detection model failed to capture, feature-based detectors rely on manually curated features, and language model-based detectors may consider signals that do not characterize AI writing as a defect. Second, current AI writing tools are easy to bypass for knowledgeable users motivated to evade detection. AI writing systems are increasingly optimized to exhibit humanlike performance and thereby reduce the likelihood – and by inference, the detectability – of artifacts. As these AI writing systems continue to improve, our results highlight opportunities to explore innovative feature design, novel detectors with increased robustness to evasion by adversaries, and combinations of different detectors to improve cost-performance trade-offs in practice. Ultimately, additional approaches are needed to mitigate vulnerabilities to evasion.

5. Future Developments and Conclusion

Now, I have no problem with companies funding the direction that OpenAI is going in. At some point, I would like to see a model that can coherently describe an experience, fulfill a human communicative role, express emotional experiences, values, meaning, and ambiguity that comes with a complicated and unique human existence. If a company feels like it can exploit the technology that may be coming on the horizon, more power to it. Researchers seem to realize that this kind of structure as a goal is important: in a few recent papers I noticed, as well as their own model, that researchers are using different stimuli as a part in order to evaluate the ‘truthfulness’ of the AI text predictions.

A cursory examination of the media reveals that individuals are already assuming that the latest incarnation of a particular iteration of the GPTEE model that OpenAI is promoting is close to being state of the art in terms of human-like text generation. However, even very short interactions with this system will reveal that it is quite obviously not human. Although the writing captures the correct themes of narrow articles, it falls very short of convincing. For example, a short text where someone asks a question, and the system responds: “Why did John Doe do X?” The system might answer: “The reason for doing X was that John had a strong emotional motivation to do X. Reason two, John had a plan of X in the first place.” Any AI designed by the same team was also always quickly recognized as model outcomes rather than human-generated writing.
