But our lives would be swept into chaos and darkness without people who stand a step higher than the rest of us and trace the threads of that varied web all over the world. We support our daily routines by depending on the undeniable knowledge, skills, and experience of these people who are called professional experts. We direct ourselves with pride to the projects and sciences they represent, which guide us through our complex world, and we trust that the future and safety of our lives can be entrusted to these shield bearers of society. The individuals who maintain the rational and trustworthy role of experts for the good of society and are dedicated to academic research and societal work in various professions, such as medicine, engineering, law, and accounting, are collectively called “professional experts.”

The pursuit of science and scholarly professionalism is a fundamental characteristic of our human nature. But among them, the experts represent the characteristics of humans who are able to overcome national, class, and all other forms of prejudices and who move towards pure science without hesitation. The various fields of professional expertise have continuously contributed to the structural and cultural development of civilization and have tirelessly sought the happiness of humanity with a professional spirit that pursues the well-being of mankind, irrespective of personal wins and losses. Professional knowledge and expertise, which have been built up over a long period of time and already accumulated to an extraordinary level, and some extremes, so to speak, have directly played a leading role in promoting the field of modern science, leading to the discovery of various principles of nature and the birth of a diversified new high-tech industry. With the help of professional ethics, we have touched the past and looked into the future, allowing human beings to hold the key and think about conscious control, external manipulation, and utilization of various components of nature.

3. Challenges and Opportunities for Professional Experts

As greater access to information and education has reduced dependency on professional experts, the challenges facing professional experts have increased. Proprietary knowledge and expertise are increasingly more difficult to develop and maintain, and removing entry barriers to specialized expertise, professional accreditation is now at risk of becoming mere licensure. The fact that information is more easily accessible does not mean, however, that the professional expert’s knowledge is less important. The real difficulty is that there is so much knowledge that few individuals are capable of using it all.

Increased knowledge and understanding have many benefits to society and to individuals, but these benefits are not easily realized because the process of obtaining and applying knowledge is long and complex. The development of a more knowledgeable workforce is important to the development of an effective post-industrial society. A post-industrial society is one characterized by a reliance on the production and particularly the manipulation of information. In educating future workers, the educational experiences currently available to the majority of children and adults are not very effective because they rely primarily on informal teaching-learning experiences. Such reliance is based on the philosophy that the more formal the educational process, the less effective the outcome.

Consequently, professionals function within ethical frameworks that are designed to foster and support these central values of professions and the broader society that the professions serve.

At various times, a question has been raised as to whether there is a more fundamental or more universal ethic that underlies the practice of the professions or that distinguishes the professions from other occupations. The professional ethic is distinguished from an individual behavior honor code, which is the broader gauge of morality and legal limits of behavior, and which has specific applications within a particular profession.

Professional ethics and professional formation are topics that properly belong as core study concerns within such professions as accountancy, medicine, architecture, law, and teaching. A professional ethic is a set of prescriptions on professional activity and relations with those served, the public, the society, and relevant constituencies.
