The profession of project management relies, in part, upon the notion of best practice. This theme is discussed further in Section 3. There is a perceptual dichotomy in both the practice and the academic study of project management – projects are often inherently ambiguous and uncertain yet we have a predilection towards best practice, clear processes, and the risk management necessary for controlled completion. This section presents an example of a company’s project management practice to discuss the value of real-life case studies. In the case study, the company’s project manager disguises perceptions of an inevitable overrun in terms of both time and cost with a series of stories about ‘learning’ and ‘reflection’. This euphemising story is problematic if the project manager’s manager’s role is part of a broader accountability system. 2. Key Components of a Professional Case Study

A professional case study is a deep exploration of real-world situations, frequently coming from profitable businesses, to convey core ideas, peculiar situations and “tricks of the trade,” best implementation methods, or donor-approved approaches. They frequently include various aspects of quality of life, situation and problem analyses, proper integrated solutions, and recommendations for future practice. Important components of a professional case study include a description of the core elements of the project, the main problems and issues associated with the project, and ways to gather the necessary information.

Professionals sometimes write case studies for their peers. Students learning about a particular trade or profession often write case studies because they offer them insight into a possible practice. This opinion and professional review perspective are perhaps the most critical components of a case study. A case study will be more worthwhile to perspective case study authors, sponsors, and end users if various professionals and potential contributing professional perspectives are considered and incorporated. Furthermore, by providing a rare look at what is contained within an authentic but unmodified professional case study report, we can then also reflect on what can be inferred about employing the case study methodology, as well as its variations, and what are the major knowledge to be situated when examining professional case studies.

We also argue that by providing a set of dissemination materials into which are incorporated the results of investigations of expert knowledge systems which are key to this embarrassment, as it were, related to the need to acknowledge one’s purpose. The professional studies are richly detailed and documented, and have all brought issues with them that could potentially have far-reaching implications. We have argued that the analysis of these studies would help us make decisions, solve problems and plan strategically, as it would demonstrate the complexities and consequences of such analyses. Since the studies describe a variety of interventions and practices in the UK and elsewhere, the potential impact of the analysis of the studies could be global. Case studies have thus far documented and illustrated a number of theoretical models. These relate to the nature of professional work, the nature of knowledge used by professionals, the ways in which professionals learn and develop, and the impact of professionals on service user outcomes. Our studies illustrate and discuss models of supervision, management-commercial franchises, patient choice and direct payment, and the user voice in mental health care.

A number of stakeholders could use the case studies to better understand their constituents and by doing so improve the decisions they make and the actions that they take. These stakeholders fall into three groups. First, the analyses will be of interest to organizations, as they will include managers working in the organizations where interventions were being run, as well as national bodies creating policy and guidance about the running of these services. Second, practitioners are potential users of analyses as they could help them to reflect on and think about their daily and long-term work. Lastly, the communities in which the services are run will be interested in understanding the activities going on within their environments. That is, the professional case studies described in this collection illustrate a model insofar as we can provide descriptions of individual or small groups of practice, linking them to local and wider environments while addressing macro systems and services.
