The Importance of Presentation College

1. Introduction

Presentation College is the best school in the region for girls from both a personal and educational viewpoint. We are a school with a strong tradition of catering for the needs of young women. We offer single-sex education in an environment that is caring and nurturing. We believe that in a single-sex environment, girls are more likely to assume positions of leadership and to develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence. Our primary goal is to support the academic and personal development of young women. Presentation College is a community-based, non-selective school, and we cater for a wide range of interests and abilities. We have an excellent reputation for academic excellence, and we set high standards for our students. We also have strong traditions in a variety of co-curricular fields including elite-level sport, music, and public speaking. We believe that through participation in such activities, girls develop valuable personal and social skills that will help them to confidently face the challenges and opportunities of the future.

2. History of Presentation College

Presentation College opened its doors to the public on September 8, 1922. It was staffed by five Sisters of the Presentation and six lay teachers. There were approximately 225 students, who paid $25 a year tuition. Seven grade levels were offered with a two-year high school program. These students of diverse nationalities and religions were the pioneers of education at Presentation. From its very humble beginning, Presentation has grown into one of the largest Catholic high schools on Long Island. In the years of its existence, Presentation College has undergone many changes and adaptations according to the needs of society and the general climate in the field of education. In the early years, the college functioned as a teacher’s training school which was something unique at the time. The college envisioned a two-fold form of education that included spiritual and vocational training. With World War II, Presentation was very much involved in its war effort. The second World War was a period when patriotism in the United States was evident. Many families in the Elmhurst vicinity had sons fighting in the war and Presentation, in the spirit of loyalty to the country, opened a course offering Civil Service training. After additional training following their high school graduation, many Presentation boys entered government service. From Civil Service training, the college upgraded its curriculum to a general academic. As the school enrollment began to grow dramatically, so did Presentation. The first major physical change to the college was the erection of the first new building, the “Annex,” which is currently the site of the science labs. This step brought Presentation into a period where constant change and building was necessary to continue to provide a high standard of education to the Queens community. At around the same period, Presentation became incorporated as an educational institution under the Regents of the University of the State of New York.

3. Academic Programs Offered

Presentation College offers a wide range of academic programs. The prospective student can choose from an array of two and four-year programs. Presentation excels in the health, biology, and chemistry programs. It is well known for its prestigious nursing program. Many local students choose to enroll at PC for general education classes and then transfer to another school in order to pursue a career in healthcare. The health, biology, and chemistry programs provide a great opportunity for these students to continue their education. Aside from the science-based programs, Presentation offers many other great programs. Each year, the business program has a large number of students. This program is geared to prepare students for a well-rounded future in the business world. It offers many opportunities for internships and jobs in the Aberdeen community. The teaching program at PC is also a very prevalent program. Many of the area educators began their teaching careers at Presentation. The education program provides a lot of knowledge into the area of teaching and much opportunity for hands-on experience in classrooms. Other prevalent programs are social work, psychology, and communication.

4. Campus Facilities and Resources

The school offers students and faculty access to a wide array of technological, print, and media resources. College classes are equipped with computers, smart classroom equipment, and internet access. The library provides a vast collection of print and electronic books, articles, and streaming media that support the curriculum. Presentation has wireless network access in both academic and residence hall areas. Information Technology staff are available for technology support and can assist students with computer-related issues. Students have 24-hour access to computer labs where they can utilize the latest software packages. Email and portal tools are used to facilitate communication between faculty, staff, students, and parents. In support of the academic programs, the Information Technology staff is committed to providing the best technology-related resources and a solid infrastructure to facilitate the learning, teaching, and administrative processes at Presentation College.

In conclusion, the journey through my year levels at Presentation College has been very enjoyable. I have achieved great academic results. Whether it is VCE, VCAL, VET, or any other field the college offers, we are looked after very nicely. The college’s facilities and education we receive are above average in standard. Presentation College is a warm, friendly place, and the staff at the college are brilliant. The students and teachers at Presentation College are very welcoming. A smiley face always helps. A very good point about our school is that we really are like a giant family, with the teachers playing the part as the parents, with the child’s well-being always at our best interests. We all have a good time in school, but we are all here to work. The work environment and the way the teachers and staff communicate with the students, and how well the students get along with each other, is excellent, which creates an environment that is easy to learn in. We like to be independent, but we always know that we have someone we can turn to if things go wrong. This helps us prepare for the big world we have ahead after our school years. All teachers at Presentation College are experts in their respective fields. Over 60% of teachers at the college are trained teachers.
