Artificial Intelligence in Presentations

1. Introduction

This categorization segregates presentations meant for teaching, classifications/demonstrations, and what I call “persuasive” presentations into linguistic and structural elements. Though the focus will be on work in intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) at times, the hope is that the ideas presented will have relevance to much of the prior work in AI in presentation generation.

This first part provides an overview of computational approaches to generating presentations, focusing on recent progress. I will attempt to provide some unification to the diverse work in the area by categorizing presentation into a few different types, and show how the complexity of communicative intent in each type maps to complexity in communicative acts discovered in prior work in AI.

Although artificial intelligence (AI) systems have received considerable attention in the popular media, and although much progress has been made in demonstrating the substantial potential of AI-powered presentations, to this day, I have never seen a single PowerPoint slide created by an AI. This state of affairs is curious, given that the problem of intelligence-presentation is by and large very similar to the problem of intelligence-action. I use PowerPoint as a running example because it is something nearly everyone can relate to. Moreover, slide-making contains most of the common elements of intelligent action: understanding natural language input, generating a representation from this input, and modifying the world using this representation. Intelligence-presentation systems try to achieve these goals for some communicative intent, and operate in domains that range from choosing simple communicative acts to teaching or giving a persuasive presentation. And yet, despite the obviousness of the analogy between presentation and action, relatively few AI researchers have studied this area, and even fewer systems have been built. I hope this changes after some of you read this article.

2. Benefits of AI in Presentations

Time saving It should be no surprise that AI can save time for the user creating a presentation. AI software can do this in a number of different ways. As previously mentioned, plugins like Zoho and Beautiful.AI are coded to suggest design changes. Other plugins like TalkMiner are coded to create summaries and key points for slide content. While software like this may not satisfy those who are hoping to never have to make a presentation again, it’s certainly helpful for anyone who has multiple presentations to create or is working under the pressure of a closer deadline. If your presentation requires gathering data and information from sources before presenting, MisterResearch can be input with the data to be used in the presentation and generate a report/correlation without the need for any further user input.

Improved design This may at first seem a moot point; however, anyone who’s had to sit through a talk where the speaker has used terrible clip art will understand this issue. Bad clip art or badly designed slideshows, while at times humorous, can be a huge detraction from what the speaker is actually trying to get across. A good AI presentation should help eliminate bad design. Plugins like Beautiful.AI suggest layouts and design options based on the content you are planning to display. While Zoho’s custom show uses AI to suggest color coordination between a PowerPoint template and the content to be entered, allowing for a more subtle but still important design change. Even small changes like this in design can make a big difference in how the presentation is received.

3. AI Tools for Creating Engaging Presentations

Artificial intelligence has found a way to permeate a myriad of applications, including that of Microsoft’s latest PowerPoint application. PowerPoint has long been established as a premier tool in the world of presentations, valued for its simple interface and user-friendly navigation. However, in today’s fast-paced world where presentations are the backbone of corporate activity, sometimes it takes a little bit extra to create an engaging and interesting presentation. This is where AI has the potential to make a significant difference. Microsoft’s AI features are designed to improve the overall look and feel of a presentation, simple tweaks such as the automatic addition of slide transitions, or suggestion of new and interesting layouts can help to take a mundane presentation and give it a little bit of flair. Microsoft has managed to incorporate features from its much-celebrated Sway application and add them to PowerPoint through the use of AI. The presentation translator can be a particularly useful tool for those whose first language is not English. The presenter can speak in their native tongue, and the add-in will generate subtitles in any of the 60+ languages available. The audience can then follow in their chosen language on the smartphone, tablet, or computer. This feature also includes a customizable pointer and laser pen and allows for an audience member to contribute a question, which can then be translated and answered after the presentation is finished. While it may not be a tool directly for making the presentation, it’s certainly an interesting add-on that could improve its delivery.

4. Enhancing Presentation Delivery with AI

Machine learning slides to summarize text. A machine learning-based system which, given a piece of text, will automatically create a set of slides that cover the key points in the text. The generated slides will contain summary bullets followed by a list of bullet points highlighting sentences in the slide that are good candidates to generate the summary. This is useful for helping people to better understand a piece of text by making it easier to consume the key points. It can also be used for helping people to create presentations by summarizing a piece of text that they can use as a starting point to create their own slides. This has the potential to save a great deal of time because creating slides can be an iterative process where the slides are refined over multiple attempts, and thus anything that speeds up slide creation can provide a significant speed boost.

5. Conclusion

Artificial intelligence has been developing at an unprecedented pace, especially within the last few years. The advancements in the field of AI, primarily driven by machine learning, have been such that it’s now commonplace to find AI systems (such as deep learning algorithms) making meaningful contributions to the field of scientific research. It is only relatively recently that the field of deep learning has been able to surpass previous high water marks in performance on standard machine learning datasets. This has been due to several important developments that have allowed modern deep learning techniques to achieve state-of-the-art results. One such development involves the use of computations on GPUs, which have been able to expedite the training of deep learning models, making it possible to perform learning tasks with large datasets. In the past, this was an impractical task due to the long duration of time required to train a model. Another recent and important development in the field of AI is the creation of AutoML, which is a means of automating the process of designing machine learning models. With the rapid improvements and large availability of data, there’s no telling what further accomplishments can be achieved in the near future. It is quite possible that AI systems will be able to outperform humans in a diverse set of intellectual tasks.
