Supplemented with smart broadcasting and other traditional educational approaches, AIED systems can provide high-quality, interactive teaching to pupils living far from schools or crowded into classes too large for human supervision. Our preliminary findings show that at the very least, these AI-based systems can achieve better educational outcomes more quickly than classroom assignments alone. Such AI systems also offer the potential for learners to become more independent of teachers, progressing at their own pace even when working outside class or play sessions.

It also means that engineer-created AI products and education technologies often differ in their intent as well as their success. In particular, there often seems to be very little educational learning from consumer tech, and perhaps a bit more strategic learning in the other direction. That is, we rarely see local, long-term interactions with vertical AI consumer tech guiding the building of new education technologies, but tech leaders often explicitly and implicitly aim to build on education experiences toward improved outcomes and improved products.

5. Future Directions and Recommendations

With the insights gained, we have outlined some of our thoughts during the stimulated recall sessions on how AI can potentially enhance the education experience.
