The Importance of National Honor Society Scholarship

1. Introduction

It is a great opportunity for me to apply for a scholarship program, which by bringing in financial support will definitely help me concentrate more on my school work in order to get the best result in the future. What an honor it would be if I was able to get this opportunity in my grasp. Because being an honor student will surely need lot financing for many purposes in order to be a successful person in the future. National Honor Society is known for providing scholarships for the students who are outstanding in all aspects. Therefore, I will use my skills and make an effort for this. With that, I would like to apply for the National Honor Society Scholarship this year. The four guiding principles of the National Honor Society are scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Though the National Honor Society is well known for its service to the community, it is the scholarship and character that in my opinion has shown the strongest influence towards my involvement in this highly prestigious organization. As I have both of these characteristics, I have always strived to improve these traits in every way possible. And now, it’s my time to possibly improve these characteristics via the scholarship towards better education and an effort to apply that education into the society in the future.

2. Academic Excellence

In addition to maintaining a transcript that meets college admission requirements, I want to be the face that proves that success can still be achieved even at tough times. My school is a good school, yet it has its enervation and it is easy for a student to follow the wrong path. I feel as though being inducted into the National Honor Society might just be the catalyst I need to spark my fellow classmates back to their right of passage.

Scholarship is essential and membership in an organization like National Honor Society can only enhance my academic aspirations. High school is a strange time. After three years of trying to develop an identity and friends in middle school, students are expected to be focused on their passions and define their goals for the future in an academically successful high school career, yet they are judged for being too serious. It is already seen, from stepping into the so-called “new and harder world” of high school that it becomes increasingly difficult to stay on top. However, I have seen moments, one of my friends from earlier years that had mostly A’s in previous years and deeply wanted to be an architectural engineer, only to receive a D in his first-year college prep math class. His parents were furious, he had to switch to an easier class that he didn’t really want to switch to, and it shattered his confidence for a short period of time. Hardworking students are often demoralized. So why is it that when athletes play on losing teams they get more encouragement than when students are carrying out their dreams? I believe we need to change perspective. It’s the students that are the real game changers, who may not have support from home to pursue their goals because college is expensive and they feel obliged to find work immediately, that need the support to keep persevering. High school and college graduates are our future leaders and we can’t risk losing them. National Honor Society is a member’s support group for the students, where the students form a support group for the school. This cooperative association is what can lead to students becoming catalysts in bettering the weakened aspects of their schools and communities, and prevention is the best cure. National Honor Society is a preemptive strike to ensure that this one and a half to two and a half year maximum period that students commence derailing from their ambition is not a point of no return.

Membership is known nationwide to be an effective platform for students in increasing college admittance. Members of the NHS are much more likely to be accepted to the colleges they apply to, as well as secure better scholarships, and it looks great on a resume. The student who strives to achieve academic success will also prove to be a good candidate for college, as well as a contributing member of society as a whole. I can assure you that I will exhibit a higher degree of diligence throughout my academic career and will always strive to be the best at any task that I undertake.

3. Leadership Skills

Effective leadership is another important aspect of the National Honor Society character as delineated in the section beginning on page 20 of the manual, writes the Advisory Council. “A good leader is someone who demonstrates a positive attitude, inspires others to follow his or her example, is a good problem solver, and can make the tough decisions when it matters.” All of these things are the fundamental of an effective leader. In taking on leadership roles in high school organizations, students can demonstrate their willingness to work for the betterment of others. High school student leaders are often seen as the “cream of the crop” in each class because he or she is a student who leads by example; their peers view them as a good representative of their class. And while it is true that many times the student leaders are those who are outgoing and the most visible, it is important to note that there are in fact several different types of leaders, including leaders who go unrecognized. Now these student leaders have an audience, and it is important that they are positive role models. Those who are NHS members often serve as a good example for other students at their school to look up to. Whether these students realize it or not, they are influencing others both in a good way and a bad way, and those who are members of the National Honor Society are expected to be a positive influence on others. This, in turn, leads to the enhancement of leadership skills. A student may feel the effects of his influence on others, especially when he is helping them in an aspect of life. He will be able to see positive results from his work. All of this will continue to build a student’s confidence and enhance his leadership skills; for a student will be much more willing to take on a leadership role when he knows that he is good at what he does and that he has a positive effect on others. Confidence is key in providing good leadership for which NHS members are known to possess.

4. Service to the Community

In your community, you may help out by doing a food drive, at a church, or at school. NHS has many events that I believe would be great to participate in and help out. I would be interested in participating in some of the events. I am proud to be involved in some of the events and I will be more than happy to participate in most of them. I am involved in the football program at my school, and I have to attend almost every game during the season. I have helped other students get their football equipment, and I make frequent trips to the school athletic trainer. I am also involved in many other extracurricular activities such as National Spanish Honor Society (member for 1 year), Key Club (member for 1 year), and Varsity/JV Football (2 years on each team). I believe that all of these activities have shown me the importance of being involved in my community and how to be a great leader. I believe that I represent a distinguished character with academic initiative, leadership abilities, and I am a great servant to my school. I also consider myself to be a role model for other students. Well, I hope that if I am accepted into the National Honor Society, I will be able to engage in activities that I believe will help me grow as a person. I will give one hundred percent effort to participate in as many events as I can. I feel that this organization does great things in society, and that I can play a part in furthering the impression that is made. I have worked hard to get to this point, and I will strive to be a great example of a leader and I can contribute to helping shape a better society.

5. Conclusion

As a student, National Honor Society is an extremely important educational opportunity which has a positive impact on me. The importance of National Honor Society scholarship has changed my perspective on excelling in education. National Honor Society creates an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Scholarship is a commitment to consistent work in a student’s studies. Students need a correct and adequate environment in order to focus completely on their studies, to excel to the top of their ability. Although it is not impossible, it is extremely difficult to accomplish individually. An average student with his typical peer surroundings can only be motivated to work at a level just above the average. In order for an outstanding student to reach his highest possible level of success, he must be surrounded by other high achievers. This type of environment is imperative to scholarship, and there must be the means to encourage it, which is what National Honor Society embodies. Specifically, the recent years at my school have thus far proven that National Honor Society excels in creating such an environment. Service is generally a part of the school atmosphere, whether it be through student-initiated programs or administrative public service announcements. Leadership is also prevalent as teachers persistently urge students to take an initiative and further their school community. Because of the introduction of community services, tutoring hours, and peer mediation on the NHS level, these activities are being done on a local level and are being done in abundance. It is effective because a lack of knowledge or proper technique can often hinder a task that could be beneficial for a community. High school students teaching other students have the ability to relate on a peer level. Right off the heels of the recent construction of my school, character is a trait that the school still seeks to embody in the new setting with many students and faculty believing that it is a fresh start for the better. Building character is an indirect goal as any service or leadership is meant to enhance the individual’s personality, and it is something that can be done on the NHS level. National Honor Society embodies the ideal of noblesse oblige, leadership based on service and the commitment to setting a fine example for others to follow. By encouraging these ideals, I have been led to a greater understanding of the difference between being a good scholastic student and being an outstanding community leader.
