Exploring the Fascinating World of Linguistics: A Comprehensive Guide to Pursuing a Degree
Linguistics is the study of language in all its aspects, which means that there is much to be studied. In any language which is studied systematically, we can distinguish several kinds of rules (in the broadest sense), such as those which characterize the sounds of the language, those which show the relation between the sound of the language and its meaning, and those which show the order of words or other units in the construction of larger intelligible wholes, and so on. The principal subfields of linguistics are divided into two groups. First, there are the traditional areas of linguistic analysis: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Second, there are the new areas of importance in contemporary linguistic analysis and application: variations in language, sociolinguistics, psychology of language, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and some other areas of research. There are also “applied” areas of interest which are connected with but not properly part of linguistics as a science: these areas include language teaching, lexicography, translation, and interpretation.
Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. Some people ask (as they have done for centuries) why we need a science of language. “After all,” they may say, “everyone speaks at least one language, and many people are able to learn more.” Since we learn to speak without agreeing on what we are learning to do, what is the need for a science of language? First, the science of linguistics is the study of all aspects of language. Second, it investigates questions which most of us leave unasked about our ability to speak and understand.
Some students are motivated or forced to specialize early in linguistics. A student deciding to become an undergraduate major in linguistics in his or her sophomore year has a relatively limited exposure to the intellectual excitement available throughout the discipline. Becoming a major after the 5th semester is unusual. Those students are often able to avoid the barriers to breadth in the discipline imposed by the university’s graduation requirements. Many of the interdisciplinary seductions can be satiated through project, PhD, and elective courses that satisfy the university requirements.
During the first two years of undergraduate study in linguistics, the student is likely to be exposed to only a few different subfields, such as phonology, morphology, and syntax through a set of core courses. As the student returns for a junior and senior year of study in linguistics, the student has the opportunity, often in seminar courses, to begin to see the overall organization of the many parts of linguistics. Sometimes students decide to satisfy the major program requirement of study beyond linguistics in semantically related disciplines by choosing additional linguistics seminars.
Integrative usability (IU) points to the social benefits of interdisciplinary learning regardless of a minor for one’s teaching focus. IU is about linguists becoming bilingual in the sense of learning how to be just biologically specialized enough to consult biologists, writing cells or linguistic generalists as opposed to scientists who are true cellular or linguistic specialists. A linguist might experience intradisciplinary overlaps, tangentially go beyond the boundary of biology, and work collaboratively in a composition, interdisciplinary environment. Headquarters positions on campus are governed by biological boundaries. The real biology language faculty on campus would teach students how to leverage interdisciplinary research strategies and how to plan for a career working with biologists. Interdisciplinary linguists, dermatologists, speech-language pathologists, speech scientists, and forensic biologists might mentor undergraduate students through case studies.
At a departmental level, specialized research takes precedence over undergraduate education. However, there are practical applications. Many software companies are run by programming-centric linguistics graduates who mainly make real money with language technology. Commercial product development in natural language processing (NLP) and computational linguistics is a kind of language engineering with various combinations of linguistic programs in the degrees of undergraduate involvement, and sometimes, internships are made available through connections between professors and industry contacts.
An exciting new area of research that has developed in recent years is that of social media language analysis. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are an important part of many people’s daily routine, and they provide a large scale, real-time look into conversations that are happening around the world. Using discourse analysis to track the way language is used on these sites can provide important information for understanding youth culture, as well as key information on the progression of emergent cultural conditions such as political uprising and refugee movement.
Research and innovation are critical components of the growth and development of any field, and linguistics is no exception. As society changes, and the way in which individuals communicate with one another continues to evolve, it is important that researchers and scholars of the field of linguistics track those changes and seek to develop new theories and applications which can help further our understanding of the fundamental role that language plays in connecting all of humanity. Some of these changes are more implicit, such as the evolution of new, contemporary slang terms, while others are more explicit, such as the development of new forms of social media and the way they shape how we interact.
A second reason why a degree in linguistics and your commitment to the field are encouraging is the great potential for either unanticipated insights. In the early days of Mars probes, as the Vikings roamed the Martian landscape, scientists at NASA expressed relief that nothing was discovered that could not be explained with what they already knew about. It took only weeks for them to realize how much they did not know about Mars, and how many unexpected events were to be found. That kind of failed expectancy is truly energizing and motivating when it arises in a science, and it is usually followed soon by the euphoria of discovery. This dimension of linguistics is not new. Throughout the last century, unsought developments have been the key to growth and rejuvenation in the field. Indeed, no forward-looking linguist from decades ago would be able to provide predictions about the contemporary state of the research, or what we expect of the future. But on the other hand, all this could be good and exciting news to anyone with a high level of curiosity.
The future of linguistics is being constructed right now. It is indeed an exciting time to be coming into the field, as a recent graduate, a seasoned professional from another walk of life, or a student at any point in between. One reason for the sentiment is that the problems that have preoccupied generations of linguists are still with us and seem no closer to being totally understood. To be sure, a lot of the puzzles in linguistics have been solved, but new ones have replaced them, and the ones still around show signs of unearthing further depths. Certainly, as stated in this book, the mysteries of life in itself reveal the fascinating texture of culture in language, their achievements, hopes, and fears. Communicative beings are what each of us is, and questions concerning language form a central concern for us all in our quest to understand ourselves.
