Presidents can often be seen as the “mood leaders” of the United States. Goleman et al go on to explain that effective communication has a direct effect on a population. The mood and tone that the communication portrays has a direct effect on the “performance” of a group or nation. This is explained by the mechanistic effect which specific emotions cause physiological changes in the body which affect performance. Joe Biden showed the nation that through constructive and motivational words, displayed in an optimistic and empathetic tone, it is possible to produce hope for the future and evoke patriotism in the American people. Group effects can be both short term and long lasting. When one applies this to a nation, it can be compared to team morale or atmosphere. The takeaway of morale from a specific situation has a lasting effect and memory of that situation. For example, the terrorist attacks on September 11 caused a sudden and rapid decrease in morale across the nation. The effects of this have lasted in collective national memory up until recent years. Joe Biden has shown that an effective communicator can generate positive emotions and united action in a nation. His speech has initiated a shift in emotion about the future, and a renewed sense of patriotism in the American populace. He has set the wheels in motion for a remembrance of this tough time in American history, not by sorrow, but by increased unity and patriotism to end the era of negative emotions caused by division and international tension.

4. Inspiring Hope and Confidence

I expected to hear him say that with new leadership, the US will take a different direction and the future will be brighter. You know, general political stuff. The United States has gone through a good deal of change in the last 50 years, some of it fabulous—the civil rights movement and technological development—but some of it has been devastating. We have seen the likes of Vietnam, student protests, the assassination of leaders, an oil and hostage crisis and most recently the events that have stemmed from 9/11. Good, bad or otherwise, it has all shaped where this country is right now. Many Americans are left wanting for a simpler, safer time. And others, particularly the younger generations, want the change that they feel is owed to the world and future generations. This is the theme for change that Barack Obama has been using throughout his campaign, hoping to rally all citizens who want to see change, behind him. There is mention that future generations of Americans will ask if their elders did all they could to preserve our freedoms and ideals. Joe and Barack seem already optimistic that they can make the change and be those leaders and another success story in the history of the US. This ties back with what was said earlier about Joe’s mention of his age. He’s already thinking that he may be remembered for something great that happens in this election. The thought of it is enough for Joe to believe that Barack has already led him to the water.

5. The Future under Joe Biden’s Leadership

The short-term fix for this crisis is to take direct action and provide aid to the countries and in doing so his administration would extend temporary protected status to immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This will suspend the deportation of these immigrants and grant them legal eligibility to work within the United States so long as the conditions of their respective countries have not improved.

The system and process for seeking asylum will be reevaluated to provide a more efficient manner and not proceed the abuse as a result of an increase in the number of misdemeanors when compared to the severity of the crime provided. This will be looked at in correspondence to the Central American refugee crisis with the goal of creating long-run benefits in Central America to prevent a migration surge to the United States.

For a more immediate change, the Homeland Security is to be directed by a justice-oriented individual where their primary concern would be the national security, not deporting illegal immigrants. This individual will also be tasked with looking into the past discrepancies involving immigrants and the public in result to a public report to prevent and clear any discrimination against.

During Biden’s campaign for presidency, immigration was a major concern within the country. His stance on the issue is rather different from the previous administration in that he is looking to create a pathway to citizenship for all illegal immigrants who were already settled in the United States. Giving them security and stability with the freedom to apply for federal aid with only an 8-year waiting period.
