1. Introduction

When students want to be their best and then aren’t, they either don’t know how to be or don’t know how to become it. But they do want to give their best, don’t we? As students, you probably already know that how and how well and how committedly you do your homework has a direct impact on what you learn. How you handle these things also has an impact on the questions other people ask you and consequently on your “feelings about learning”: Do I like it or don’t I like it? Am I capable or am I not?

Professor Hertling, a well-known and well-respected professor, feels that “everyone is their best when they want to be their best”. This idea isn’t a new one, as numerous experts in the fields of psychology and education have demonstrated for over 100 years. Would you agree that when you don’t want to do something or you don’t really like it, you are not likely to do your best work or feel very proud of what you did? Students agree with this belief. Whenever I ask students if they always give their best effort to the things that aren’t fun or they don’t like, I receive lots of chuckles, grins, honest acknowledgements, and emphatic “No’s!”

2. Organization and Time Management

Especially at this time during hybrid school, when students face even more responsibilities, it is important to have strategies and tools to face the situation. Homework planners can benefit students with learning disabilities by increasing their organizational skills. One student said, “Using the manual that your teachers give you is also a great strategy, as it helps you in organizing and also in memory. It is much easier to have everything scheduled, to write the dates of the exams.” Another explained, “The use of the lesson planner benefits the short and long term. The short term benefits the class, and the long term benefits the future. It has information about what you are going to do, so you do not forget. It also benefits cognitive impairment.”

The first advantage of using a planner is that it helps students work on basic skills of organization and time management. Since it is very easy to get in and out of the house for people with learning disabilities, it is easy for students to lose track of things. As a result, we often see children wasting time looking for their assignments, texts, and other school-related items.

As it turns out, there are many advantages that teachers and caregivers can enjoy from the use of homework planners. I will focus on 4 general benefits.

3. Improved Productivity and Focus

The author has experienced the effectiveness of having students define and commit to homework goals by rating specific items to ensure that daily expectations are clearly identified, committed to, and addressed. Although it is unrealistic to require teachers to quiz students daily about the learning strands to which the homework is related, students working to comprehend these strands and teachers guiding the students’ work. Granted, additional time and effort were undoubtedly necessary as students grew in their abilities to engage in detailed knowledge work. In view of the potential prospects, this time would seem to be invested rather than squandered.

This study investigated the effectiveness of a homework planner as a tool to promote self-regulation for two high school students with learning disabilities. The results of the study indicated that using a planner prompted both students to plan for and monitor their progress towards homework goals which led to improved productivity and focus.

When students review and organize the day’s assignments in a homework planner, key information about assignments is easily visible for the students and their teachers. Students have more time for homework and free time, and teachers have more time to teach and plan effective lessons. When priorities in their work are evident or changes to an established order of assignments occur, students spend less time on decisions and have both overall efficiency and time to work on thought-intensive homework. They read fewer assignments to track current and future work and prepare for their day’s academic demands.

4. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

It is paramount that students plan for both short-term and long-term assignments. Failing to follow the study plan to prepare for exams and complete given assignments fuels feelings of inadequacy and incompetency, contributing to a higher level of anxiety. Assignment planners can help students have a realistic plan to prepare for their course load. A student can, on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, have a visual presentation of all the projects, completion due dates, and other activities associated with college attendance. Using assignment planners can also have positive implications toward their annual grade average.

Reduced stress – Although the level of stress can differ from student to student, there are many negative implications that have been associated with an increased level of stress for college students. Some external factors that have been cited to contribute to high stress among college students are: fear and dread of balancing academic and personal commitments, time constraints that accumulate when a related job to cover college expenses is added, long hours of commuting to go to school, and sometimes stressful relationships with roommates. Most students are often troubled with fears of not being able to achieve a passing grade, and as a result, they are occasionally overwhelmed. They sometimes cope with alcohol and drugs to escape worrying about their exams or academic performances. While these may provide temporary relief, they do not address the issues. Using assignment planners can reduce stress since a student is not at risk of forgetting the due date of an assignment, hence having something to use to prepare for the exams.

5. Conclusion

This article goes to show how necessary the benefits of a homework planner are in the life of a student or anyone studying. The use of a planner while studying can keep track of everything as well as being academically successful. As has been seen, when assignments, projects, and every such tasks are written out, time frames set with a work plan, such work plan was properly utilized to see to immediate or minor tasks as stipulated and strongly adhered to, then the long-term goal can be visualized.
