The Importance of Science Education
A college student maximizing his or her time by being active in the schools and communities where they study performs service learning. Service learning is something each and every college student should experience before they graduate. Service learning involves an academic credit, diploma, or award granted by a school or program to a student in exchange for an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflects on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. This type of educational experience is aimed to teach students a sense of responsibility to their community and introduce them to skills and career choices that will help strengthen a particular community. Participation in service learning can come from a classroom assignment and/or a lesson that stressed the importance of giving back to the community using knowledge gained from course content. It can also be self-motivated, where a student gains information from a particular subject and utilizes that information to aid a particular group or community. As I mentioned above, it is very important that a student using service learning reflects on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content. A pre-study and post-study is the ideal way of doing this to showcase the knowledge that has been gained from the coursework and the way it was useful in providing aid to the community or group.

Teachers can give children the impression that science is linked to everything in everyday life, and at this point, science education will be more effective in catching children’s attention. By making it fun to learn, teachers can help to take away the stigma often linked with the word science. Step by step, we can start to change the negative connotations with the word science to a generation that is well informed about the inner workings of our world.”
When a student is struggling with a particular concept in science, it is likely that they will turn to their textbook for assistance. This can be a good learning experience, but often the text is quite dense and full of technical terms which have very specific definitions in science. If the student has a version of the textbook which has an online access code, they may have the opportunity to find the answers to the “term and concept” worksheet available online. This can be a valuable resource because the student can simply look up the definition of the term in question and gather a better understanding of what the question is asking. The student’s parents may also be able to access the online textbook. This can be very beneficial to the student because a science question can now be discussed in the context of parent and student, which will further the student’s understanding of the concept in question.
Science assignments are diverse in terms of format and grading. Some assignments are laboratory-based and formative. Other assignments are spreadsheet-based and summative. One common type of assignment is the science terminology and concept worksheet. This is quite prevalent in middle school and high school science. Often, students struggle to understand the concept and main idea of the work being performed in class. This is common because science classes tend to move fast and often leave behind the slower student. These types of students tend to be left behind in science in general because, in order to understand a new concept in science, one must first have a firm understanding of the prior concepts.
Again, experience has shown that science is a tough subject to grasp for many students. And not only have students had problems understanding it, but teachers have been difficult in trying to convey the subject effectively. With this in mind, it is essential to say that homework completion should not be equated with homework comprehension. With teachers encouraging independent study of a concept, there should be some sort of aid readily available. Access to reliable sources such as books or the internet should be available, and the traditional memorization type homework should be avoided. Open-ended investigation type assignments that require participation and help the student discover why something happens can be more beneficial, but in the words of a teacher, “students hate to look up the answers to something they don’t know in the book.” Even he admitted that he cannot teach the subject effectively. This has shown that learning can be a two-way street, with student and teacher both taking the journey.
So it is the responsibility of every individual in this society to create the want for science in young ones, to install in them the wish to question and the interest to discover. If this happens, it will result in an increase of scientific literacy. A scientifically literate person is one who is aware that science is part of our culture and society and has an understanding of basic scientific concepts and is aware of how science and technology affect our society. The average citizen has so little understanding of how science works that it allows them to be taken advantage of by those who have a twisted understanding of science. An example of this can be the exploitation of the public concerning issues like global warming and evolution. A scientifically literate public would be able to analyze these issues and come up with their own informed decisions. This literacy begins with an early introduction to the scientific method and a strong base in science. A strong science education is not only important for the future of the students but also has far-reaching implications on the life and general welfare of a country. It has the power to drive economic growth, enhance the quality of life and health, and increase social and environmental responsibility. By making the wise decision to teach science, a country is investing in its future. Considerable scientific literacy among its citizens will enable a country to distinguish policies, make informed decisions, and decide upon which direction would best benefit the future. A society with a larger proportion of scientifically literate persons will make decisions that impact the future of its society based on careful consideration and sound judgment. This will also allow for a general improvement in the standard and quality of discussion of societal issues. Global issues such as the environment and energy sources require an educated population in order to make decisions that can provide a long-lasting positive impact. A strong science education can play a huge role in enabling these issues to be clear to a future generation.
