The importance of academic integrity can be traced back to the time of the first universities in which students were trained to become members of a society, specifically to uphold a profession and contribute to the general welfare and safety of the public. In this sort of an elitist system, it was very important to specify what types of behaviors would be satisfactory in representing one’s self and one’s competency. It was apparent that “cheating” and “bragging” about one’s skills that did not exist could be detrimental to the welfare and safety of the common good. The consequences for cheating or copying homework may not seem severe at first, students feel they are getting their work done will less work and stress, however this is not a good thing. Cheating makes it so that a student does not need to learn valuable skills and information because he or she can just acquire them at a later time from someone else. In terms of direct consequences, copying homework can affect the student who is being copied from, as that student may now receive a poor grade due to your lack of original effort and understanding. But perhaps the most dangerous consideration is that if one is learning habits that avoid solving problems or coursework correctly, it can affect the quality of work in one’s later career. The more a student can bypass coursework with less effort, the less their work habits will become, and the effectiveness on that student’s overall understanding and competency in the work will be lost.

This will result in better grades, a deeper understanding of the class material, and ultimately a greater sense of satisfaction pertaining to their education. Additionally, students should tap into resources such as tutoring and study groups. Many schools offer free tutoring services in a variety of subjects. Tutoring may be completed either in a group or individual setting, depending on the student’s preference or on the severity of the class material. One-on-one tutoring may cost the student, but this is not something to brush off quickly. There is tremendous benefit to individual and focused attention; the material can be covered in a shorter amount of time and in a manner that best suits the student’s learning style. Overall, the cost may outweigh the positive effects that tutoring has on a student’s academic performance.

This implies that there may be a difference in perceived expectations and reality of the academic world. This difference may involve the showcasing of etiquette for success in future careers, realization of global intellectual competition, culture of education, and personal experience. We believe that our values and attitudes toward integrity will continue to evolve due to ongoing generational transition and effects of external sources at both individual and global levels.

Today’s generation in more developed countries has evolved from predominantly promoting in-group expectations and stereotypes, as revealed by an Australian norm group conducted in 1966 (Turiel, 1983), towards embracing the principles of humanism, an equal society, and individualism. There appears to be a 10-year difference in the transition of embracing post-conventional morality and the current university students in our data.
