Depending on where one lived — whether a powerful European nation like Russia, a less-developed empire like the Ottomans, or an entrapped totalitarian state like the Qing — and one’s gender, class, and social and economic status, the application of these changes and the benefits they created were staggered. Custom and tradition died hard, and many rulers saw resistance and outright global change in transport, commerce, finance, and industrial production as threats to their power, rather than potential benefits to their people. It was a lesson of global and historical importance.

Today, scholars often use 1815 as the unofficial beginning of modern history, though this period is complex and difficult to define. Indeed, it is fair to say that the “modern” frames significant global change from around the time of Napoleon, whose empire emerged from the French Revolution and also contributed to the wave of revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848. The process of industrialization had been underway for more than a century, but the scale of its impact on society and politics was just beginning to manifest. As the century progressed, science and technological advancement mushroomed, impacting every aspect of human life. Advances in communications and transportation reduced the time it took to connect London with the imperial possessions. Massive leaps in medicine, hygiene, and nutrition fueled explosive population growth.

However, from the ashes of war emerged a more inclusive world with a new wave of international bodies, including the United Nations, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and the World Bank meant to control and curb warlike tendencies and foster a more cooperative spirit among members of the international community. The struggle between East and West fructified during the Cold War era. The East and the West were poles apart in terms of socioeconomic and political environments, leading to strained political and diplomatic ties, which still characterize the global political scenario today to a lesser extent. With the end of the Cold War, many other smaller countries were encouraged to break their shackles, and many more have made democracy their way of life, molding today’s geopolitical picture.

Industrial Revolution The onset of the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of various breakthrough technologies in the 18th century laid the foundation of modern history. Initially, the only economic activities were agriculture and trade. But with innovations in the fields of iron and steel manufacturing, glass making, and coal mining, societies began to industrialize, marking the beginning of a new phase of human civilization. Factories started taking over the place of cottage industries, causing an influx of rural population to the cities. Machines began to perform tasks that had traditionally been done by humans, followed by the invention of the telegraph, telephone, electric power and lighting, automobile, railway, and radio. This changed how people communicate, travel, and lead their lives. We are still living in revolutionary times as far as technological achievements are concerned. The most recent drive of innovation is in the field of computers and the World Wide Web. While this has brought the world closer together, it has also created an unfortunate divide between the haves and have-nots.

This type of thinking enables us to pull apart issues and better understand the deeper roots of modern challenges.

Throughout this paper, the purpose was to explore and bring to the surface key events and influential figures that have shaped and contributed to the course of modern history. Those events and figures are rich in context and deeply entrenched in the cause and effect of time, vilifying, and are intended to educate and edify the free mind and spirit. Whether recognized or not, their presence or absence ultimately affects the landscape of history on both a national and international level. The natural flow of events, whether or not established by a higher power, singularly or as a group, often affects local or global trends. The study of history allows one to learn and understand those that have gone before us, to wisely apply past values to contemporary life, and to create strong values for those that follow us.

The sincere and open-minded study of history will help one to make wise and informed choices. History can become a whittling tool, creating deep faults within the heart, or a force that binds one to others, a realization of a connection made by being a part of the grand and intricate portrait of human life. We cannot escape history. It lives within us, like a heavy and ill-favorable convicance of disease. The inheritors of the past are responsible for the future and have an obligation to recognize the truth about who and what we are, separating fact from fiction, regardless of whether the results are “good” or “bad”. Otherwise, the delusion and struggle for the “Creation of America” will be repeated; unwittingly we deceive only ourselves focusing on the plural concept of “We the people of the United States”, when in actuality, “we the people of the world” would be more respecting of just and accurate representation.
