Overall, the content presented in the chapters collectively defines the essence of health science learning and research, as well as introducing a new framework to assess and consider relationships between diverse knowledge and different health professions.

The application of scientific knowledge to health is a critical priority for both the prevention of disease and effective health care delivery. Many specialists, regardless of their particular academic disciplines, have long considered their work aligned with the broad field of health science. Disease prevention efforts and health promotion strategies can greatly reduce the need and demand for treatment and support. These state-of-the-art methods are at an early stage of development and are too little applied in health science. Because of this, this paper will, by necessity, be heavy in vision and potential rather than listing many currently existing applications. This means that the paper is focused primarily on the future instead of being a review meant for the present. But it’s important to see where the field is going as well. Since the health sciences almost inevitably involve human subjects, very high standards of data protection should be used. For each method, we will therefore also indicate anonymization considerations, though for simplicity, we do not differentiate between the respective regulatory requirements for academia and companies.

Now, let’s explore the ideas and methods which are just beginning to spread throughout this rapidly evolving field. These cutting-edge and transformative technologies will eventually be standard tools in health science, and this preprint aims to already show their promise and potential applications in health science. We provide concrete applications for each of them, illustrated by already-existing innovative studies. We emphasize interdisciplinary applications and methods. We hope our clearly laid-out concepts will be instructive for scientists starting in this area in rapidly exploiting and disseminating these pioneering new applications.

5. The Future of Health Science: Emerging Trends and Opportunities

Within the health science modality, there is a robust need to focus attention on shifting the current emphasis from disease treatment to chronic disease management, and better understanding the resources, communities, policies, and contexts that are required to support this evolution. Providing leadership in defining the science-based national policy that supports this necessary shift in paradigm and research agenda will better prepare our future workforce and students who have an interest in addressing major domestic and international environmental health and chronic disease problems. The lack of significant progress in addressing important and disturbing health disparities suggests that sharing the mission of promoting health science research investments within a comprehensive national strategy of addressing the many social determinants of health – which disproportionately impact low income and racial and ethnic minority communities – deserves greater attention. Educational programs that apply an integrative and comprehensive philosophy to define and support its various components will produce graduates able to address health and well-being in a nation that endures a complex economy, labor force, demographic, governmental, healthcare delivery, and professional scientific environment.

There are certainly numerous areas that must be addressed in order to develop a comprehensive health science, and health science programs should consider health, well-being, health promotion, and disease prevention as their areas of focus. There are various opportunities for the growth of the health sciences. Due to the expanding and data-rich global economy of today, there is greater potential for health science professionals to collaborate with other research disciplines. Functioning in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment is beneficial as it allows for the broader perspective necessary for solving complex health issues. Research teams with expertise from across many disciplines can more easily ask comprehensive and innovative questions and design more complex health science projects where data are collected and analyzed from multiple scientific perspectives. Exploiting these interdisciplinary opportunities will support a research agenda that is rich in its potential to reveal the complex associations of environment, chronic disease, human behavior, and access to physical resources.
