The Importance of Developing Effective Communication Skills

1. Introduction

The task at hand for several talented adults seeking work is the development of ‘soft skills’ (such as those possessed by the police) which are top-ranked on employer ‘wish lists’. Successfully gained degrees are now minimum demands from most companies. It is the overall personality makeup of an individual. The least of these include commitment, honesty, and strong work ethics. It might seem like a backward move but, the fact is that these are the vital ingredients which help an individual unleash their full potential, said a corporate official of T.I.M.E. HO, Mumbai.

Communication skills are as important as technical qualifications for youngsters aiming to get their dream job. Good communication skills and evidence of accomplishment, leadership, and team skill are particularly relevant. Effective communication is an important life skill that enables all personnel to share information and work with other people. It promotes a confident and assertive image. Good communication, verbal and non-verbal, skills are the key to success at work. It is incorporated in a range of diverse activities. Staff needs to stay in touch with users and offer tasks through one-to-one contact, voice call, and graphical conventions, etc.

2. Understanding the Key Components of Communication Skills

Ignoring barriers to effective communication normally will lead students to have negative attitudes toward general education professors. These teachers may expect students to experience difficulties in class and may be overly tolerant of inappropriate behaviors because they are not sure how to behave or what strategies to use with the student. A teacher who is adept at communication promotes trust, confidence, and understanding across a classroom or other setting. Good communicators use various signals to reveal trends of both true and not so true messages (that often are expressed non-verbally) and they are sensitive to suggestions. They are willing to actively and constructively confirm the message: they listen carefully and attentively, and use body language which suggests their understanding or empathy. Moreover, they make and maintain eye contact, make signals of involvement (head nodding and interjectory utterance), and use positive confronting, supportive as well as confrontation speech styles.

Verbal communication cannot be regarded in isolation from how verbal codes are used, in conjunction with body language or other definable aspects of non-verbal communication. For instance, a great deal of the intended meaning of students is carried by body language, facial expression, as well as tone of voice. Non-verbal communication is an essential component of the total communication package for any form of interaction between students and their peers. Individual differences exist in terms of communication effectiveness. One proposal to explain these differences is to regard all communications in terms of message encoding and decoding. In the classroom context, the student must encode a message about a subject into verbal (and possibly non-verbal) codes, and the teacher must decode these messages in order to understand the nature of the concern.

3. Practical Strategies for Improving Communication Skills

Use Behavioral Objectives – Outline Specific Goals. Behavioral objectives can increase awareness, focus, and motivation, but be realistic about your individual starting points, resources, interests, special needs, and responsibilities. Stretch a bit outside your present level with a goal within reaching distance. For example, begin by setting goals for a new concrete skill such as using one of the 26 new words you learned from reading a book, watching “The Discovery Channel,” or scanning a dictionary. Work toward better hearing and understanding at least 80% of two consecutive messages that you overhear before engaging in conversation. Focus on a single, specific channel with a time limit such as “I’ll turn ‘eye contact’ on at meetings four times in the next 15-minute segment” or “I’ll allow two conversational segments before turning to my computer screen,” etc.

Continue to set communication goals, practice the relevant skills repeatedly, and monitor your own and others’ current patterns of communication with supportive and competent supervision. It may not be quick or easy, but you can improve communication skills both on the job and in your personal life through ongoing attitudes, actions, and reflection. This part of the chapter includes a variety of practical strategies and techniques for developing a more effective communicator. Choose the ones that are best suited to your learning style or that most address your specific needs.

4. The Impact of Effective Communication in Various Aspects of Life

More importantly, we should also be a good receiver, to be able to understand and give some responses to the messages given to us by other people. That is because having better communication skills becomes a very important aspect in human living. If not everyone knows how to use their self-improvement communications, then they will fail to bring the right message they want to deliver to the receiver. When we have bad and ineffective communication skills, then we will bring failure to the understanding of the other person who is conversing with you. Nor you did not understand you, thus you both feel the plea and distress in the conversation. And with this, it has an impact on many other aspects of life, such as social life, personal life, family life, corporate life, etc. The main point is that being lacking in highly communication skills means that it ruins your life!

Effective communication is one of the keys to making our life run very perfectly. It’s so complicated, though, because there are many factors that can ruin the perfection of the communication process. That is why it is very important for all humans to learn and be more aware of the development and improvement of our communication capacity. Most people still think that the importance of communication skills is on how to dominate the conversation well, but this is very wrong. That can just fool you because having better communication skills isn’t supposed to make you the dominant one in a conversation, but it helps us to find a way on how to really communicate with other people. More skills should be developed so that the communication process can meet the expectations of the receiver of the information given by the sender of the message. And with this, we really need to learn some ways on how to communicate with other people. We should learn how to properly deliver a message, making the other persons who are conversing with you understand every message that you are stating.

5. Conclusion and Call to Action

If we hope to have students who graduate from high school and have the confidence and skills to compete in the “real world,” then we must teach problem-solving and paper and pencil skills at the same time. We cannot have one without the other. Therefore, we must develop effective communication skills in our classroom. It is not only our responsibility but also it is the only way to effectively and responsibly teach problem-solving techniques to the students. In my personal opinion, it is a quality that sets the advanced mathematics student apart from the general student. The advanced student not only takes notes, asks questions, exhibits good organizational skills but is able to clearly and effectively communicate what he has learned through speaking and writing.

In conclusion, the task of developing effective communication skills is central to the teaching of the math curriculum. We must expect the students to master these skills. We should constantly model good communication strategies and provide simple and practical effective techniques while presenting decoy problems to the students. We do a great favor in this process as students do themselves a favor when they learn to solve word problems because word problems are life problems. They are the most challenging kind of problem and in the long run, the most fulfilling to solve. We are doing our students a favor by allowing them to grapple with real-life situations and figure out how to solve problems on their own.
