1. Introduction

The primary aim of a research background is to inform the reader about the subject under research, as well as the motivation behind it. This could be in the form of a history of a particular theory, a description of a real-world problem which the theory is supposed to resolve, or a gap in understanding a phenomenon. Background is written to help the reader understand the context in which your research was conducted. Keep it relevant to your research and ensure it does not cover too much general information. Articulating the research aims and objectives provides an explanation of what you believe the research will achieve. Usually, these aims stem from the research problem and are expressed in an ideal world where the problem has been resolved. Aims and objectives are often confused, yet the differences are quite clear. An aim explains in broad terms what you hope your research will achieve. Objectives are specific steps or strategies that lead to the desired end state. A clear hierarchy between aims and objectives should be evident.

The aim of a strong introduction in a PhD dissertation is to provide a concise overview of the research, the motivation behind it, the methodology employed, and the key findings. The introduction sets the stage for the rest of the work and is the natural starting point for a reader who wishes to understand what a thesis is about. Ideally, in a good introduction to a dissertation, you should describe the relevance, aim, and objectives of the research before summarizing what it contains. Often the best introductions are written last, after the rest of the work is fully explored and the report as a whole is well understood. Ideally, the introduction in a PhD thesis should take up no more than 5-10 percent of the total length of your research (e.g. 1-3 pages if your total work is 20-60 pages).

2. Literature Review

The breadth and extent of knowledge which is used to complete the aforementioned task is hard to quantify. The most challenging and difficult aspect of the literature review has been to try and define the point at which I stop looking for more information and actually start writing. And when writing, how do I avoid leaving out a key piece of information? Writing the dissertation has taken a long time and throughout, it has been updated and altered. An inevitability which occurs as a result of the increasing of my knowledge surrounding the topic as my research has gained momentum.

Literature review writing can be particularly tricky for students as it is a specialized form of writing. Specifically, the importance of the full dissertation is so great, this can be incredibly stressful for students. At best, this can increase students’ anxiety and make them less likely to extract much useful learning from their mistakes. At worst, this can make students feel as if they are incompetent and incapable of improvement. Consulting and coming to an understanding of someone who has a job in doing something similar is invaluable. Given my father’s career in academia and his expertise surrounding academic writing and PhDs, I have been able to draw upon his knowledge and experience while writing mine.

3. Research Methodology

This analysis will then be used to generate a pool of possible items, which will be reviewed by both the investigators and other experts in the field, and a subset of these items will be pretested for content validity. At this point, the items will be revised if necessary and thus begins phase two of the research, item revision. In this phase, the self-report items will be field tested with a variety of populations, and item performance will be analyzed. Although the main concern is with item-SWB relations, response styles will also be studied at this point and work may be done to develop specific items for different subgroups. Item revisions will be ongoing throughout the project and beyond, it is expected that SWB and its components will change over time and new and better ways will be found to capture these concepts.

The research will be conducted in two major phases. Phase one includes item generation. In this phase, the investigation will have two main purposes: the first is to generate a pool of measurement items, and the second is to understand better the ways in which SWB is experienced in everyday life. Item generation will begin with interviews in which respondents will be asked to describe their experiences of various specific emotions, both those which they consider to be components of SWB and those which they view as irrelevant to SWB. From these interviews, both emotion content and language will be analyzed and compared across various segments of the SWB continuum. Specifically, it is expected that there will be different forms of a given emotion which occur when a person is feeling very high vs. very low SWB. These differing forms will be identified and linguistic distinctions will be studied in order to determine better which emotions are relevant to SWB and how they may be most effectively captured with self-report items.

4. Findings and Analysis

A more general finding, also seen in “Temporal Profile of a Clinical Diagnosis of COVID-19 and the Associated Healthcare Data: An Epidemiological Study of and Early Incidence in New York State” and “Increased caffeine intake is associated with reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease”, it was found that there was a large use of secondary data, such as medical records, during studies. With the increasing ease of data collection and digital information, it was found that it is possible to conduct research in settings that are not specifically research focused. This can be used alongside an understanding of the populations affected to study the results of healthcare and health policy initiatives. However, with the control of data sources, there is the potential to introduce bias and conclusions from such studies should be approached with caution.

One of the more significant findings is that of migration. This was discovered to be a key factor in the spread of the virus across the state in “Temporal Profile of a Clinical Diagnosis of COVID-19 and the Associated Healthcare Data: An Epidemiological Study of and Early Incidence in New York State”. It was identified that domestic travel was more popular, with people using public transport likely to develop COVID-19. International travel was much less common, with only 4% of admissions having traveled abroad in the 14 days prior to hospitalization. This led to The National Foundation for Infections Diseases to state that transit to hospitals for COVID-19 is fueled by lower socioeconomic status and access to aid is necessary. In addition to this, there was an upstream trend in the onset of the disease with the urban environment and transmission among healthcare workers and those with an occupation outside the home. This information can be used throughout the pandemic to isolate those at higher risk, improving isolation and protection methods.

5. Conclusion and Recommendations

A comprehensive summary is offered that covers all the substantive aspects of the research done into the Australian film industry and policy. The aim is to comprehensively evaluate current policy and identify directions for future policy in supporting the film industry. Recommendations are uniquely tailored to addressing concerns specific to the Australian policy making environment. It is hoped that findings of this research and subsequent recommendations will shed light on what are the best ways that government can support a private industry in the small, open and trade exposed economy that is Australia, and thus lead to an improvement in existing policy. Developments in the global economy and ongoing structural change are likely to continue placing pressure on the film industry and creative arts in general. Future research is likely to be able to build on the foundations set in this thesis regarding policy effects and better understand the processes of policy formulation, diffusion and learning in the Australian political economy.
