1. Introduction

This is the fifth essay which I have written and by far the essay that I am most proud of. This is because the topic of the essay was of great interest to me. The essay is based on a research carried out by myself where I was to find the impact of independent work and that of teamwork on the social and academic life of students in the university. I hope this essay will prove to be the beginning of many more assignments that I will have to complete in the near future that will contribute significant measures to my success in the course. I also hope that it will get a good grade as compared to the previous essays that I have written. The research which was carried out took place in the lecture halls, dormitories, recreational centres and the university library. It was a great experience for me since I got an opportunity to interact freely with very many students so that I could be able to gather comprehensive information that was accurate and reliable. This is a very important thing to me because the greatest fear of any person carrying out a research is to get not so accurate information that will make the whole research to be doubtful. By moving to different parts in the university, I was also able to understand the impact of changing environment in the social life of individuals. The research that I carried out and the information that I obtained will certainly help me to become a more responsible and focused individual in future. It was interesting to notice that almost all the students who participated in the research were opposed to the idea of working in groups and instead, they opted for individual study. This created a very big idea in my mind to try to find out the reason as to why the students chose this particular method.

Homework is an essential part of the academic experience. In order to succeed in school and in life, students must be able to undertake complex, analytical tasks on their own. Homework teaches students how to set priorities, organize, manage time, and solve problems. It also provides students with the opportunity to practice at what they are good at and “study” further those subject matters which they are not so good at. When students do their homework on their own, they develop essential skills in self-discipline, time management, research and information gathering, and critical thinking. Each time they receive a task to do homework on their own, they are taught how to learn and to find their own answers which in turn enables them to be self-reliant.
