2. Ethical Considerations in AI Art

When considering the ethical implications of AI art, it is important to remember that many of these concerns are important in other areas as well. While there may be some ethical considerations that may be more apt to the field of AI art, many can be addressed in analogous ways to how these concerns are already being addressed by the larger AI ethics community. AI creativity and authorship have been long-debated factors considering parody, ghost-writing, virtual musicians, chat-bots, and industrial design. As before, creativity has been described as a hallmark of intelligence, but primarily of human intelligence, given that human beings have a natural capacity for surmounting or evolving from complex, life-threatening crises. Could creativity be understood from a human perspective and still restricted to human beings? Would a machine listening to and composed of notes, rhythms, melodies, timbres, and interplays of instruments make a difference in appreciating and valuing the orchestra’s performance? How likely and desirable is a change of perspective in the relationship between machine agency and human autonomy, in which autonomy is not necessarily bound to control?

4. Case Studies: AI Art in Practice

This functionality provides state-of-the-art, user-friendly access to a GAN, which in turn generates art that often rivals other popular AI art generators such as Artbreeder, Dall-E, Deep Dream, and RunwayML. While our work offers a foundation for understanding how others may be viewing, evaluating, and discussing individual artifacts generated by popular AI art services and systems, addressing other important research questions will have a longer-lasting impact. To what extent do creators of deep learning AI art comprehend and address potential implications arising from collections of AI-generated content? How are public perceptions of this content shaped by external discussion and articulation of context, including legal and ethical impacts? How are AI-generated artifacts being monetized, and how are payments shared or distributed among creators of the AI models, providers of the AI services, stakeholders who generated or provide access to the data with which the models were trained, the copyright holders of the data, the custodians who exhibit the work or share ownership of AI models, individual users who customize the artwork via “hyperparameters,” and others?
