1. Introduction to the Importance of Science Experts

A speculative inquiry into the view that scientific expertise is overrated in the use of science for policy and similar purposes. After casual observation as to the role of scientific expertise in the public debate during a natural disaster, the essay offers a case for the high general value of science expertise. Expertise is classified into three types. An appendix lists some factor expert contributions in 15 major science areas over 600 years using 24 different contributions by 23 experts. The essay ends with some general statements.

Those who share my passion for the signal influence of purposefully achieved knowledge on the evolution of modern society have a potted history of the world. Unfortunately, while most every schoolchild knows at least the name of at least one person who accomplished a great deed or provided outstandingly creative guidance in some sphere of art, history, entertainment, or sports, the names of great scientists are known only to those who study science. Their overwhelming number – perhaps millions over the past 800 years, not to mention the present because their beneficial influence is cumulative – has resulted in that anonymity generalization. Speculations about the ranking of persons one ought to know about are instructive. Hopefully, this essay in a small way counters the uniformity created by unknowing. After all, the creation and expansion of all the things that have provided our modern lives with great value could not have happened without the ongoing – and increasing – contributions provided by those espousing the fact of some matter or practice. Their purposefully pursued expertise is, obviously, too little celebrated and not widely enough recognized given the help and guidance that often comes from factors scientists and engineers provide.

2. Biographical Sketches of Key Figures in Science History

The list of important contributors to the development of science is long and consists of individuals of both high achievement and high recognition. Almost all of the recognized great contributors to the emergence of modern science – certainly all the important figures up to about 1700 – are known to students in the United States. Educated adults, no matter in which part of the world they may happen to have been born, drawn, or educated, have at least heard of these individuals. The names of a significant fraction of the giant heroes of earlier science – Copernicus, Galileo, Isaac Newton, and a significant fraction of the giants’ predecessors and successors – are also quite well known to students and well-educated adults throughout the world. Conversely, the list of great scientific figures contains practically no scientists born outside the Western world, with the exception of a few important late 19th- and 20th-century Japanese and Indian figures, and is dominated by citizens of Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and the United States.

3. Notable Discoveries and Theories by Prominent Scientists

In the history of mankind, there have been numerous important discoveries and advancements that were proposed and eventually accepted by scientists. These pioneers had established several pieces of work and knowledge that were crucial in contributing to the development of mankind. A brief listing of these significant individuals’ contributions and theories is as follows:

Nicolas Copernicus revolutionized the theory of heliocentrism, which states that the Sun is the center of the solar system, and the Earth revolves around the Sun. His work was a very significant piece of theoretical basis in modern astronomy. Johannes Kepler made an excellent discovery that the orbit of the planet is not a circle as believed by many but an ellipse. He also established a relationship between the orbits of planets, the planets’ distances from the Sun, and the revolution time of planets such that the relationship indicates that the square of planets’ revolution time is proportional to the cube of the planets’ orbits.

Galileo Galilei developed the telescope and used it to observe the celestial sky. He made many revolutionary discoveries, including the presence of the five moons of Jupiter, which contradicts the belief that all celestial objects and celestial bodies revolve around the Earth. Isaac Newton integrated the concept of gravitation and the law of motion to form Newton’s laws of motion, which elucidates the gravitational effect of celestial bodies and becomes the foremost cornerstone throughout the history of mechanics’ development. Newton further formulated the universal gravitation law and invented the Universal Law of Gravitation. The universal gravitation law asserts that two celestial bodies attract each other through a gravitational force acting along the radial line connecting the two objects with an attractive force value equal to the product of the two objects’ masses, and the attraction force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance d between the two objects. Furthermore, he has also proposed the concept of differential calculus and integral calculus.

4. Impact and Legacy of Science Experts on Modern Science

The science world has always been replete with numerous science experts of varied prowess whose contributions have invariably shaped the general or specific realms of their expertise in science to date. Science deities, celebrity science experts can as such possess enduring mass appeal due to their superlative qualities and notable birthday which could be obtained either through discovery or by invention of something remarkable. Over the years, countless science gods or celebrities who have, or have had some profound influence over their domain of predominance have influenced and possibly driven science profoundly in their epoch or even today.

The contributions, legacies, and impacts of these chosen ‘gods’ can indeed be varied and therefore are the focus of this special issue. Discussions in this special issue indeed draw attention to the most extraordinary achievements of unique scientists and indisputable authorities in varied fields of science civilization.

The selected experts and so-called gods of science have either set paradigms in genomics, cured diseases, unraveled equations of practical significance, paved the way for the inception of a new breed of sub-disciplines, improved efficiency and effectiveness of discoveries by discoveries and eureka moments, redesigned science paradigms, separated science from pseudoscience, or have even written how they would like the behavior of science in the future. Equally, some of these gods of science have indeed made wrong claims with far-reaching societal implications and even have mixed science with politics to disaster. The legacies of a few more authorities such as Oswald Avery, J.B.S. Haldane, Linus Pauling, or Michael Brady might not stand the same test of time. Indeed, everyone among the listed celebrities might not reach the truly aspiring level of expertise by their ultimate measure of contributions.
