Having a scholarship also means that there is less pressure on the student to work part-time to help pay for their education. This means that the student should have more time to focus on their studies, which is the reason that they are at University in the first place. They can also get involved with more student activities, or sports without the issue of balancing a job and school work. This has been proven to provide a much better experience for the student, many of whom say that their college years were the best years of their life. This also means there is a decreased chance of a student loan. The opportunity to owe little or no money after graduating from college is a huge benefit, as many students are still struggling to pay off student debts years later.

Sullivan writes that at a college-preparatory convention he asked a group of guidance counselors “how they define a good college.” They all responded that in the final analysis, a good college is one where the counselor would want his or her own child to go. The problem with this, Sullivan argues, is that most public high schools only employ a single guidance counselor, who comes from a lower socio-economic status. As a result, these counselors are unable to advise students on colleges not close to home that are cost-effective (i.e. with a scholarship), and students subsequently attend colleges with lower rankings than they are capable of being accepted to.
