With an increasingly fluid, global, interwoven and technologically mediated society, education is an interactive field of rich complexity. It is influenced by a web of governmental and global factors, institutional objectives and economic drivers, and is the platform for many individual agendas and attitudes. In a pluralistic landscape of purpose, agency, and change, predictions are at best educated opinions and at worst pious fiction – formulations of collective identity and longings.

In this context, what are some of the most significant challenges and opportunities in education today? First, we review the likely fate of traditional education. Next, we discuss key barriers to teaching/learning. Finally, we will identify some near-term opportunities in training and teaching methodologies. “Education’s first responders and thought leaders are convinced of one great certainty: education cannot return to the pre-COVID 19 functionality as if it never happened.”

The business of educating has never been easy, but recent global events have forced significant and disruptive change for educational institutions. Some of the changes to old processes, teaching methods, and student relations are admittedly also welcome. New, more effective, more efficient, and more humane teaching methods and structures are under development in real-time, and many will result in permanent improvements to the industry. Some educational institutions, for various reasons, will not take advantage of these rapid innovations. They may not understand the underlying innovations, they may be unable to afford the investment, or they may simply resist change. It is sobering, however, to note that the majority of institutions will also not be able to block or avoid beneficial and necessary change. Rapid advances in teaching and training methods stand to benefit those who are prepared to excel within an evolving and complex environment. Indeed, better teaching and better training are key recommendations of futurists, solutions brokers, and other thought leaders who look ahead at positive changes that can result from our present turmoil.

This pedagogical revolution literature values the opinion of the student and develops our value-adding chain themed section by highlighting the insights in student-centric and student-owned educational approaches. Hence, this array of articles progresses the student-centricity theme by focusing on how students can enhance, among other things, productivity. Collectively, the authors pave a new educational path that the student can tread, wherever they may be, and whenever they can—working towards constructing and leading their own (educational) experience of the world academy.

We place them to open up the future horizon of the potentials of emerging educational practices from those who had an early adopters’ perspective.

This book seeks to present leading best and innovative approaches to education and learning for the future.

Technology has been used to address educational challenges – from increasing active engagement and making learning more accessible, to reducing the cost of teaching and providing us with a better understanding of how learning happens. It also brings these changes at a very fast pace. Given the potential impact on so many areas of education, it is perhaps time to start thinking about what we want it to do, rather than simply asking what it can do. While acknowledging the outstanding potential of technology in future education, it is essential to also consider the downsides and plan accordingly. Also, ethical questions need to be answered clearly as technology begins to dominate education.

Aside from newer methods of teaching and learning, technology is also reorganizing the management of education. From administrative processes and school management to exams and admissions, education is becoming increasingly tech-driven. In the process, this impacts the infrastructure of the educational sector. Further, learning platforms and schools need Wi-Fi to carry on their day-to-day activities while smartphones are utilized for a wide variety of purposes. Despite some challenges, technology has the potential to revolutionize the way education works and can be a game-changer if implemented sensibly.

We also hear potential design principles from different vantage points: firstly, from the perspective of governmental and systems reform (in interviews with the Finnish Ministry of Education and AdvancED, the accreditation agency), and secondly, innovators and visionary school leaders. Each outlines in practical terms what it will take to deliver the transformation they envision. Given the potential of technology to support the pacified system they see, we also hear from some innovators about how they see the future of edtech responding to these demands. The pieces in this collection make a compelling case for change, detailing the types of innovations and reforms that will be necessary to ensure we meet the challenges we face.

While current education systems were undoubtedly designed with positive intentions, the system we inherited is not conducive to the development of the skills and mindsets that will be crucial for success in the 21st century. The experts we spoke with for this collection pointed to the myriad technological, economic, environmental, and social changes currently taking place in society. Changes such as the realities of home and flexible work, increased concern about mental health, as well as the changing nature of urban and rural living, present challenges and opportunities which education institutions will have to respond to in order to thrive. For these experts, the future of education has to be about more than just securing children’s prospects in the future job market. They see the need for a system that contributes to a better society and a better life for all.
