5. The Process of Creating a Unique Custom Writing Necklace

I: Making the custom word necklace (resin). A: Buy a resin jewelry making kit. B: Following the instructions in the kit, mix the two-part resin and pour it into the mold. C: Once the resin has been left for a short while and is at the point of being sticky (called the gel stage and may take around 2 hours), press the rounded end of a cheap needle file into the resin near the edge of the mold. This is to check if the resin has reached the gel stage. If the resin is still soft, it won’t hold the impression left by the file. Now leave it for another 8 hours, and it should be hard enough to remove from the mold (cure time will depend on the type of resin used, hardeners, and also on the volume of resin mixed). If it looks too flexible, give it a bit longer. Unmold residue D: Slightly overfill the mold so you have a convex resin top where you can see the indentation of the lettering. This is in case the back needs sanding smooth. After 24 hours at 20 degrees C, the resin should still be slightly flexible and easily popped out of the mold by pressing with your thumb on the back of the mold. This will leave a thin tab around the back edge of the piece. Remove this with side cutters. Clean up the piece Unmount the resin piece from the mold. Now from experience, do NOT use a knife to carve the flashing and excess resin from the piece, as it’s very easy to make a mistake and ruin the front. Instead, I would use some medium grit sandpaper on a flat surface, rubbing the piece and checking frequently. Keep going until the piece is looking pretty good, and then switch to a fine grit to remove the sanding marks left by the previous paper.
