1. Introduction to Creative Writing

This module will guide you through an exploration of how creative writing works. We’ll be looking at different writing styles and how to make the most of your writing skills. We’ll also be exploring how to expand our creative writing skills through the use of different methods such as putting ourselves into another person’s shoes to understand how they would feel, think or act through given writing prompts. Taking the time to free write will help you understand how your mind works. This is focusing on writing whatever comes to mind without any judging from your own thoughts. Drawing will also help generate creative ideas as the use of imagery has a natural gift in inspiring creative thoughts. Finally, reading other people’s work and discussing particular aspects will provide a clear understanding of creative writing and form a basis for improving one’s skills.

2. Benefits of Using Writing Prompts

It has been proven that children learn better from short, varied tasks than long concentrated ones. Having a selection of prompts available will provide children with fresh ideas for their writing that can be easily implemented into their essays, stories, and other forms of writing which will reinforce key writing skills. Not only do prompts provide essential literal practice, they also provide practice for handwriting, spelling, and other mechanics of writing. At the middle school level, state writing tests are often a requirement. Many of these tests require students to produce an organized, well-developed composition within a limited time period. Your students will learn to write on demand by using these prompts! Prompts can easily be incorporated into state standardized tests on writing.

3. Section One: Narrative Writing Prompts

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose? Write a story about a middle-schooler with a superpower and explain how the power causes and resolves conflict. Write a story about a character with a very specific and unusual gift, such as being able to break any world record. Journal Writing Idea. Imagine a city project to have every school student do some hours of community service as a part of the required curriculum. What are the pros and cons of this project? Write a story about a family member who has an addiction and how it affects the whole family. Imagine an adult tells you that you are never going to amount to anything. What would you say to this person, and what would you say to yourself? Write a story to explain.

4. Section Two: Descriptive Writing Prompts

Imagine you are on a desert island. Something has gone wrong with a plane, boat or teleporter and you are the only person on the island. What happened to the mode of transport that was bringing you to civilization? What will you do on the island? How will you cope? How will you get off the island… will you get off the island? How do you feel about being stranded? And if it’s too depressing being alone on the island, throw in a few friends and enemies… what could be more fun than marooning people? This exercise encourages students to think and write creatively as it allows for a little fun!

Create a mental picture in your mind of a place that you feel represents happiness. This can be a real place or it can be a fictional place (think about such places as Middle Earth, Narnia, Wonderland). Close your eyes and describe the place. What can you see? What can you feel? What are the people doing? What does the air smell like? What can you hear? What is the weather like? The aim of this exercise is to create a picture of a place that is clear and vivid in the writer’s mind. This is a skill that is essential to good descriptive writing.

5. Conclusion and Final Thoughts

To conclude, getting students engaged in writing is important, and one way to do that is through the use of creative writing prompts. These prompts can be used for students in nearly all grade levels. The more advanced the students are, the more they will be able to connect their prior knowledge to the prompt. Writing charged with creative energy will not only draw readers in, it will make them believe in what is being written. This forces the student to understand what is required of them in their writing and enables the teacher to give a more accurate grade. Writing prompts can be beneficial to school lockers for students. Those students who love to write and take pride in their work – taking special time in elaborating on details – can decorate their lockers with these prompts and their writing to share with others.
