The Impact of Human Connection on Mental Health: Insights from Psychology Experts

1. Introduction to the Importance of Human Connection in Mental Health

The fields of mental health and psychology continue to evolve, connecting mental, emotional, and social health for a more holistic approach to well-being. Emphasizing the value of human connection – genuine authentic connection – can be a missing piece to positive mental health. Human connection includes the connection with yourself as well as with others. The message is clear: nature, nurture, and culture matter in positive mental health for everyone. The discussion on the importance of person-focused care for individuals and communities is embraced by health professionals, health care systems, and providers. Conceptualizing and addressing mental health through the building and maintaining of human connections will help to advance and take action to achieve a broader, more inclusive, and nuanced understanding of positive relationships and mental health for all members of our communities.

It is not only about having the skill sets, it is also about caring and demonstrating active curiosity of what it must be like to be in that individual’s shoes. It is noteworthy that this is found by many psychology experts across several settings, countries, and cultures. These reflections suggest that, while some relationships and dependability changed over the years, there appears to be humans’ constant appreciation and longing for a positive connection, mutual engagement, feeling seen and emotionally supported, and sharing dignity and respect. What is new within the last decade is the evolving concept of a more transcendent human connection or a spiritual support, which may also provide a benefit in expressions of hope, finding life meaningful, and coping with pain, suffering, and experiences of moral and spiritual distress. Being familiar with the concepts and dissemination of person-based methods can help to expand competencies and better prepare students to learn the art and science of helping individuals and communities in their personal and interdisciplinary collaborations.

2. Psychological Theories on the Role of Relationships in Mental Well-being

According to psychologists, social connections (perceived social support, relationships with neighbors, and feelings of exclusion) are reliant on other important life factors, including: a sense of coherence, which is associated with not only mental health but participation and adaptation to social and environmental life; life satisfaction, which measures an individual’s perceived progress in relation to important life goals; sense of purpose, which predicts the likelihood of future discretionary activities and physical activity levels, both of which are necessary for mental and physical health. Since all these resources have been shown to have some association with personal relationships, this means that as well as resources, they can act as protectors, reducing the impact of stressors and limiting the impact when exposed to situations leading to mental illness.

Eriksson and Lindström, who developed the principle of salutogenesis, contend that good mental health is achieved by identifying and working with “health promoting resources”. Their contention is based on a growing body of evidence showing that personal relationships contribute to physical, mental, and social well-being and protect against ill health. This model asserts that the use of relationships as a resource to promote mental health can be of greater value than focusing more exclusively on their ability to protect against mental illness. The evidence in support of this claim can be found in the extent to which social conditions, such as low social support, isolation, and loneliness, are associated with common mental disorders, including anxiety and depression.

3. Case Studies and Research Findings on the Benefits of Social Support

The study of depression provides important evidence of the power of human connection and the importance of addressing the many ways that humans receive and give support. Major depression and dysthymia (a more chronic and less severe form of depression) affect a large and increasing cross-section of the population. The World Health Organization declared depression the major health threat of the 21st century. In 2000, an estimated 21 million people sought treatment for depression in the United States. Studies have found a close relationship between a high number of stressors, the absence or weakness of social support, and concurrent depression. Moreover, social support is beneficial because it provides a number of buffering effects so that certain individuals do not suffer the physical and psychological health problems that would be expected with their level of stress. These buffering effects occur on many different levels, including behavioral, physiological, cognitive, and sociological. Fighting depression and the risk factors that cause depression involve long-term and intense effort to form new and transform existing daily habits.

Research has shown how vital social support and related constructs are, especially for women. These studies have provided important insights about patterns of similarity and difference in terms of the types of social support that women in general or women relative to men give and receive. Our results are consistent with this scholarship. The link between women’s pressure and depression is directly related to social ties. The mental health of the women in our study is closely influenced by the quantity and quality of social ties, particularly as they are influenced by or socialize racial and other social structural factors. Social ties reflect the distribution of depressive symptoms among women and moderate the relationship between the stressors and our various mental health conditions. In addition, our study reveals significant interactions between social stressors and sociodemographic variables presumably tied to multiple roles (like age, partner status, and number of children). The quality of multiple roles, especially as they increase women’s social support and restrict the growth of role strain, is more strongly tied to mental health than the mere presence of a given role or the positions different roles foster. In short, our findings suggest that social ties play a crucial role in protecting women’s mental health, a notion that is supported by powerful personal testimonies. Women’s voices reflect numerous mechanisms by which pressure and gender expectations shape mental health.

4. Practical Strategies for Cultivating Meaningful Connections in the Digital Age

The digital age has brought about major changes to the nature of our social interactions. Through digital communication, people are often connected to others in ways that can be simultaneously more frequent, to an increased number of people, but less deep and less intimate. These shifts bring about changes in the support that we get and expect from our personal relationships. There is a large body of research suggesting that people who feel strongly connected to family and friends, as well as to a work community, cope better with stress and are happier. Quality of engagement is key to well-being from digital applications, however, rather than quantity of engagement. Currently, many digital apps and platforms appear designed to foster a constant stream of frequent, shallow connections in a winner-takes-all, daily user-engagement race.

Our survey confirms this research, which I’ve found in the last 10 to 15 years, of the impact of high-quality connections. Many of my students come to class with an almost pathological sense of competition about grades, growing up in this ultra-competitive world, and I try to make them counterpart about the importance of the high quality of relationships and think about it in a variety of domains. This is what also helps alleviate the inner sense of perfectionism and outperforming everybody else. To escape this sense of win-lose, internet-communicative velocity, and anonymity, many upper-middle-class people, myself included, go hiking in beautiful natural places. Unfortunately, due to race and class privilege, not every person has the option to unplug, to alleviate their sense of competition among elite peers. However, everybody can build offline high-quality relationships. Yes, it does take time, but people who sacrifice sleep and work to immerse themselves into digital bubble communities would see their well-being grow.
