The Impact of Historical Events on Modern Society

1. The Importance of Studying History

We should all study history differently to not repeat the same errors made in the past. Also, history is filled with important events and certain individuals that have shaped and created the society we live in today. Learning about the past is like taking a trip back in time where you can learn about your ancestors, how people lived and how nations were built. It is important not just to settle for learning the names and the dates of those events but it is crucial to understand the significance and the consequences of what has happened. We can see technology, trade, war and cultures all link to the study of history and how we have come to be what we are today. However, history is largest part the study of the way people relate to each other. The most fascinating things about history is to understand that people from the past weren’t all that different from us. The past is full of losers. Many people who were on the wrong side of history or became victims of what other people were doing but there are certain winners that come out of it and therefore we are learning history is not an exact science and any of these things can change. If we think of the modern world and all its technology and the way we can now communicate and travel easily, it is our history that built and created it and therefore this is the most important reason why studying history is crucial. By learning about the past, we can see what society has to offer and allows us to build on what we have and to make a better future for the next generation. When a person studies history, not only do they learn about knowledge and how things work and function but some people take it to the next level and they use it to make an impact on tomorrow. History can help with our future; it helps people to understand the origin of their own countries, contact with other countries, where to favourite sport came from because of trade and the most important reason is to understand the identity and who we are. At the end of the day, history is a story. It is the story of all of us and any event, big or small, is a part of that story. There are millions of stories to be told and heard and by studying history, our story will be written and what we say will only be the beginning of something that will be cherished for years to come.

2. The Influence of Ancient Civilizations

Thus, the cultural, scientific, and political contributions of ancient civilizations to modern society have been enormous and their impacts continue to be felt even in the 21st century. Such long-lasting influence of ancient history can be most clearly seen in the many values and ways of political thinking that have developed in western nations over the centuries.

Modern Americans, Australians, and English have been influenced by the two successful revolutions in the ancient world. The American’s War of Independence was based on the beliefs of the French in the days of the French Revolution. Many elements of American culture can trace their roots back to different periods of ancient history. For example, democracy is learned from the ancient Greeks while the idea of a Republic is adopted from the ancient Romans. Also, due to the ancient Romans, the citizens of the United States are entitled to a great deal more freedom and rights than the subjects of a monarchy. Today, the Roman calendar is still used in many countries, showing the great impact of Rome on modern society. The development of Roman numerals and the Latin language has also provided a direct link between the modern world and the influence of the ancient Romans.

Over time, ancient civilizations have provided an important source of inspiration for modern society. The ancient Romans and Greeks, for example, gave the world democracy and a prototype of the Republican system of government. Their philosophy and political theory had great impacts on western political thoughts. The ancient Egyptians also provided modern societies with a great deal of scientific knowledge. The construction of pyramids and their complex irrigation projects showed the highly developed skill of the Egyptians in applied science.

3. The Role of Revolutions in Shaping the World

A revolution is a special form of collective action in which large numbers of people work together in order to change a particular political system fundamentally. Like for the war, you can find many effects of “the war” spread across the borders and categories. First of all, it is important to remember that modern technology plays almost the most crucial part in the recent revolution. From the French Revolution in Europe and the United States to the Chinese Revolution; and from the Russian Revolution to the Vietnam War, technology has contributed a large part. This technique not only open a new area for the type of modern uprising, but also had substantial reform to the more conventional warfare in that period of time. A reputable author believes that we now entered into the fourth groundbreaking period of the modern warfare. It is interesting that the scope of the uprising keeps widening. Most of the previous revolutions were limited in a region. Now day, “almost every uprising has potential to spread globally”. After the Second World War, nonviolence has become a new technique to achieve the successful revolutionary effort. A number of demonstrations organized by fasting and prayer and arrests were seen as human rights violations. Finally, that attract the worldwide attention this show that nonviolence protest is not only successful, but also could achieve an ongoing and “real” advancement. Modern wars such as the Vietnam War were considered to be a struggle for power between the US and the Soviet Union. Today, the anticipations of what potential outcomes are associated with different parts of the world caused much stronger direct and indirect conflict between countries. The General Social Survey in 2010 shows that non-violence protest or demonstration was considered to be effective against any kind of the law.

4. The Significance of World Wars

After the First World War in 1914 to 1918, there was a worldwide boom. The industries of many countries were booming. This ended the United Kingdom’s century-long position as the most powerful nation in the world, and the United States took over first place. The country suffered huge economic and human losses. This was because the duration of war was so long. People of the country had to enter war in 1917 and many lives were lost till 1918. An entire generation of men was slaughtered. Over the next few decades, Germany’s economy suffered a big blow, resulting in the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles led to the devastation and wreckage of World War II. Numerous historians posit that the consequences of this treaty created the Second Great War. The United Kingdom’s economy was also deeply affected by the war. Although the UK won the war, the toll it took on the country from an economic perspective was significant. As the UK’s economy diminished, America’s thrived. As a result, the United States was able to place many sanctions against the UK and use the Great War as a means to assert American authority. So the country suffered huge economic losses. This was because the duration of war was so long. Many years after World War I, global powers increased their military and naval programs because they perceived others as a threat. This made international diplomacy almost impossible. This also led to the formation of hostile military alliances. All of these causes led to the aggravation of the war. The World War I led to the eventual rise of Hitler. And then of course, World War II began. All these significant changes in world politics allowed the rise of fascist Italy and the Nazis in Germany. And Italy and Germany did more than just create a highly political Europe. They actually began political and aggressive moves. Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Spain were taken over by fascists and this slowed down the independence movements in Asia and Africa. As a result, all of these significant consequences of World War I really did promote major changes in the world. From political, social, and economic aspects, the effects of World War I were, amongst many, far-reaching. These effects are less important of the First World War than are of the Second World War, however. World War II, in particular, really did have a significant impact on the development of the modern world.

5. The Relevance of Recent Historical Events

This is certainly not to say that modern society should overlook ancient history. On the contrary, all four themes of history discussed in the essay (ancient civilizations, revolutions, world wars, and recent history) need to be studied in conjunction. However, recent historical events have crucial importance in helping to interpret global modern politics, international relations, and social movements. For example, understanding the lasting impact of the end of the Cold War in 1991 or the consequences of the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 is crucial in making sense of the current international structure and, in each of these cases, the huge changes in global politics and effects on the national economy in the United States are much easier to understand when placed in a historical context. Similarly, the rise of populist political movements in European countries and the UK, as well as the increasingly isolationist approach of voting publics in countries like the UK and the USA, have all been connected to the ongoing effects of the 2008 global financial crisis. This in turn allowed for the development of movements such as Occupy Wall Street in the US and the ‘99% of Italy’ protest campaign in countries where similar causes and effects of the crash as experienced in the UK and the USA. By encouraging students and indeed the wider population to study modern history with the same attention and importance as ancient studies, the legacy of their own lives and that of their parents and grandparents can be garnered through studying the recent past. In conclusion, while the knowledge from studying ancient history cannot be overlooked, this does not diminish the importance of modern research. Nor does it justify historical education as a one-size-fits-all narrative which forgets the various and changing cultural traditions that makes up human history. Rather, an understanding of how the practices and decisions and opinions of individuals and societies, in the recent past and today, have been influenced by the increased prevalence and significance of new communications technologies, opinions and attitudes in modern society, has the potential to allow those with power over such decisions to be knowingly conscious of the shaping influences of all areas of historic study.
