The Importance of My Admission to This School

1. Introduction

The passage from “The Importance of My Admission to This School” by Lampedusa provides insight into the character of Tancredi and the ancestry from which he hails. Tancredi is a character who seeks to rise amongst the social circles of Sicily and thereby change his position in life from that of a peasant to a prince. It is ironic that Tancredi is an idealist who holds faith in the revolution, but he is the embodiment of the change which he aspires to see come about in Sicilian society. This change is best addressed by the prince who is a picture of aristocratic perfection. Tancredi is told by the prince’s representatives while fighting with the Piedmont forces that there is no room for a bourgeois aristocrat in their plans. This indicates that the change heralded by the revolution is the move from one social class to another while the state itself remains untouched. It is also clear that Tancredi believes that him being the last generation of his kind will have no negative impact on him partaking in an honorable future. His resignation to eventually serve as a hired assassin for some stockbroker affirms to him that so long as he performs acts of morality such a time will never be considered without the chance of finding a better fate. This resignation is a reflection of his decision to accept the betrothal to Concetta who has no dowry left to offer. His constant resilience and placing of pride prohibits him from settling for mediocrity in life and this can be illustrated by the fact that he would rather starve than eat filched food.

2. Academic Achievements

They fail to realize how important the one thing they require from me is. I have been in a seemingly constant state of academic success ever since I learned how to speak in the English language. Starting off my elementary years, I have been placed in G.A.T.E (Gifted and Talented Education) courses, retaining a G.P.A of 3.8 and higher. I maintained very good standards all throughout high school, right back up to the present point, despite temporary feelings of discontent and confusion about my life’s direction. And during this time, I’ve always managed to take very good care of my mental and emotional health. Competition in the academic and professional world. Lack of fulfillment with other schools’ professional and educational programs. And most of all, it is for maintaining the perpetual pursuit of happiness, and in order to do so must we overcome that which obstructs our way. These are the forces that have brought me here today turning in this application. Here’s one prospective caring and professional psychologist, in the making.

3. Personal Growth and Development

It is tough to say whether or not I would be the same person that I am today if I hadn’t attended the public schools in my district. If you ask me if I regret my years in the public schools, I would honestly have to say that I don’t. During the years I spent in the public schools, I accumulated a lot of valuable skills and experiences. Because I lived in a predominantly black neighborhood, I was immersed in the black culture of thought, language, and dress. Having grown up knowing all that I know, I only see it as a positive that I was able to relate to so many people in my warm friendly neighborhood. Even though my parents never experienced firsthand the type of cultural attitudes that I experienced in the black community, they did a good job raising me to be open-minded about people and gain a good understanding of why certain social circumstances may exist. So the majority of the friends that I have grown up with happened to be of different minority cultures. These would include Indians, Koreans, Chinese, etc. Going to school with them and knowing their family members has given me another greater understanding of these foreign cultures and created a sense of camaraderie when trying to relate to the everyday struggles of the sons and daughters of first-generation immigrants. Also, it keeps me up to this day about the types of discrimination people of their background may encounter.

4. Contributions to the School Community

The harmful stereotypes from which the author seeks refuge are only expanded at his current institution. First, the lack of a core curriculum, indicating his keen avoidance of any math or science courses, was a very key selling point on his admittance. This is due to the empirical evidence of a negative relationship between his race and perceived ability in the subject. Underrepresentation of African Americans in advanced placement classes has succeeded in a glass ceiling effect where few are enrolled in what are considered more challenging courses, which makes it difficult to find peers to relate to who share his course load. He believes that his interaction with peers of similar coursework will be instrumental in breaking the stereotype that African American intellectual ability is largely less than that of other races. This year-long break from math and science would allow him to continue the pursuit of his passions in the arts, enrolling in fine arts courses while taking Italian. With the math and science requirement completed, the author knows he still has a tough road ahead being the only African American in these classes but is up for the challenge to cultivate change. In addition to this, an audience with a better understanding of the arts is necessary for his goal of conveying the hardships of inner-city youth to society. Secondly, and to his satisfaction, a lack of association with the state of Ohio and the southern United States is a departure from the conceptual frameworks that have been deeply rooted and challenging to disarm. This is not to say that those who associate with these areas are not good people, however, it is an inevitable reprieve from covert racial bias.

5. Conclusion

The conclusion to any essay is important. It will either reaffirm the thesis that had been proven or open the eyes of the reader to another idea they had not been previously thinking of. Throughout this paper, I hope I have been able to show just how important it is for me to be admitted into grad school. At times, I know I may have swayed from the thesis, but in the end, every example shared and experience told ties back to the simple fact that being admitted into this school will change my life. It will allow me the chance to change my family’s financial situation through bettering my own. I will be able to become an even better educator, and in the end, it will allow me to give back to all of those who have supported me through these years. I have taken the time to ask other students if my feelings are the same as their own, and in each case, it is. It does not matter what the age, married or single, students all over the world share the feeling of importance about their education. With today’s society and the many problems within it, education is still seen as an important factor to success. This success, in the end, is what we all strive for, each in our own ways. The road may be long and hard, but it’s all about trying to make life a little bit better for our children and our children’s children. This is what education has always meant to me, and it is the exact reason I chose to be an educator.
