The development of children in society has long been considered of utmost importance, both by laypersons as well as by scientific psychologists. Psychological development has a crucial role in achieving personal and social goals. It includes many areas, such as cognitive functioning, moral reasoning, emotional and personality development, social skills, and parent-child relationships. Many factors can influence children’s psychological development, including genetic and environmental. Successful psychological development transforms a dependent infant, who can barely hold up his head, into a confident, competent adult who is ready to face the world and to take a place as an equal in adult society. Since children are considered to be the focal point of society, the way societies view their children and prepare them is of prime importance.

In order to understand child development and the unique characteristics of children, and to plan educational curriculum, caring adults need to comprehend how children grow. There are two different aspects of understanding the growth of children. One is the physical growth, growth of basic systems in the body, the structures, and biological systems. Another one is the psychological growth, which is the internal growth of cognitive and emotional processes. The field of mental growth is the subject matter of studies of child psychologists. The scientific study of children’s psychology is called child psychology. A focus of the study is to study the processes, for instance, perceptual, cognitive, and emotional, that lead to behavioral interactions with the physical and social world around them. Sigmund Freud’s Influences: Psychoanalytic Theory Psychoanalysis is Freud’s vast system of counseling and therapy focused on the unconscious processes and unresolved conflicts of childhood. Psychoanalysts would remove obstacles to a person’s growth and self-realization, such as secret fears, forgotten events and repressed personality traits. Some critics dismiss psychoanalysis as completely metaphorical while others view it as valid but unfalsifiable, making it impossible to verify or disprove Freud’s principle. Researchers approached Freud’s theory with greater objectivity. Psychoanalysis was derived from his treatment of a number of famous Viennese patients, and settings in which he performed his research were limited. Freud was a lifelong student of literature, and his choice of methods and language reflected his deep knowledge of literary resources of the time—metaphors from art, naturalism from literature and poetry were integrated with clinical and nonclinical observations and reinforced his persuasive genius. After all, Freud’s theories have been a meaningful source of inspiration and support for developments in coping, rapprochement, cognition, dreams, social behavior, attachment, mourning and IQ tests.

3. Developmental Milestones and Assessment Tools

There are several comprehensive assessment tools available to help developmental clinicians determine where a child (age birth–6 years) is developmentally, according to their chronological age. To name a few: Gesell, Brazilian-ADI (Avaliação do Desenvolvimento Infantil), and ASQ (Ages and Stages Questionnaire). The ASQ is a parent-report questionnaire that measures developmental milestones in the early years of a child’s life. The scores can be used to determine where a child is developmentally compared to their chronological age. The 21st editions of the Brazilian ADI (ADI-R) and the second edition of the ABC assess large areas of child development as well as the presence of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. The benefits of developmentally focused assessments are that they typically have the added advantage of having additional scales, which can be helpful in providing a broader understanding or context of a child’s overall development in relation to all of these life-activities expected of them. These additional scales help make full assessments that are helpful in gaining a full scope of the child’s developmental strengths and weaknesses.

Child development experts refer to the following 10 major domains of development: Combinations of these domains form larger categories of behavior, including, but not limited to, cognition, language, and social communication, emotional expression, and fine and gross motor skills. All of these combined help developmental clinicians to measure a child’s “functional age” across early and middle childhood careers. The establishment of a functional developmental age allows for the understanding of when complex learning patterns should emerge throughout childhood. Once established, a developmental career can be placed center stage within social and educational environments. When placed accordingly, the core demands of cognitive, motor, emotional, and social functioning behaviors interact longitudinally across functional career patterns.

4. Current Trends and Future Directions in Child Psychology Research

The goal of this chapter is to provide a brief, non-exhaustive overview of current trends in research in child psychology. It should be kept in mind that any progress in the understanding of children is a collective achievement, and that the swift rate of advances and the increasing complexity of statistical methods, designs requiring large samples, ever-changing legislation and ethical standards, are making the task of the contemporary child psychologist more complicated than ever. The most fundamental research issues remain: what are the important things for a psychologist to know about children? How can the psychologist tell when they look at a child’s behavior, senses, thoughts, or feelings? Why and how do children change in various ways over time?

Since development takes place in a complex and dynamic environment, there is increasing recognition that the end product of child rearing and education cannot be considered to be the result of what went on within a single setting, be it the family, the peer group, or the school. Researchers have investigated many complex ecologically driven causative models which have taken into account the impact of multiple levels of variables: personal characteristics, the family, the school, the peer group, the media, and the culture. Highly specialized research teams have been concerned with the details of development at important transitional obstacles people encounter, such as birth, puberty, or life stage transitions, like the transition to elementary school or puberty.
