The Impact of AI Writing on Communication

1. Introduction

“Human1 with Writing acknowledges that individuals are born naturally able to learn to write, while the numerous offspring of writing lead to powerful and valuable ways for individuals to enhance, replace, or counter their natural communication abilities. Researchers from various disciplines suggest how writing and writing technologies can be understood, how people learn to write and use writing, and how writing might change. Below, where we review selected NLP/AI writing research, we begin our response to Human1 with Writing by acknowledging and engaging prior persuasive attempts to illuminate writing and its societal impacts, while implicitly presuming, as they do, the central role of writing—one that NLP/AI writing builds on.”

These tools offer unprecedented opportunity to better fulfill the universally recognized, culture-specific, immeasurably valuable, but differentially realized potential of writing. From schoolrooms to offices, in public and private realms, in academia and enterprise, individuals such as students, teachers, and copywriters, and social organizations, such as classrooms, businesses, and nations, all stand to benefit from the awesome potential of AI writing technology to enable individuals and nations to fulfill Human1 with Writing.

2. Advantages of AI Writing

The more information a user writes in a journal or sets up an account, the easier and faster the journal writes because the user writes with default settings rather than providing input data every time before starting the current task. An automated writing tool can handle all the tasks, except data entry. The content is only required to be “wow or proficient” in order to provide impressive results to the user. This tool automates documentation processes with minimal human interaction, saving time and effort. AI writing extracts generic text using favorite templates to provide both offline and online experiences. In addition to writing content faster than humans, AI writing can also create very few errors, meaning the content created by automatic writing is final, accurate, and professional. AI writing makes very few, if any, errors because it builds text data from a large database of notes, letters, reports, articles, and journals extracted from the internet. Writing AI provides incredibly good alternative results and real skills.

3. Challenges of AI Writing

While one of the major challenges in AI has been continuous improvement, one common problem faced by AI writing is that it has yet to achieve the same level of creativity as human writers. The ability to generate creative works, expressive content, and powerful prose is a hard-earned skill for humans associated with complex cognitive and emotional processes such as personification and moral references. AI writing still generally bleeds when challenged to produce deep and insightful art, and AI language models have difficulty discerning what type of content it should generate to best suit the creativity, originality, and relevance of the prompts. The performance of existing AI writing models may be improved if researchers begin to incorporate methods inspired by narrative theories and other narrative-focused research more generally. AI-enabled conversations, more often than not, easily lost touch with common sense and violate commonsense moral norms, raising the potential dangers of deploying the technology in communication scenarios.

In contrast to the wide impact of AI writing technology, there are a few challenges that are often encountered in the writing process of the AI writing models. Existing AI writing models often complete a given writing by predicting the next word in the sequence or one that follows the given prompt text. This widely used autoregressive manner would explicitly lead to repetitive and dull completion given a single round of generation. To the contrary, fans have been actively conducting research that aims to control and diversify text generation and injection controlling signals conditioned on the user input. Given certain templates from the user as input, the complete sentence could take on multiple and diverse forms. The problem of designing a multi-turn conversation generation framework maximally imitating the human conversation and reducing the failure rate faced by agents in conversation generation scenarios is yet to be addressed.

4. Ethical Considerations

When considering the implications of AI writings, individual privacy concerns are particularly highlighted, namely issues in the modeling of consent for information of persons who are mentioned or quoted in documents generated by AI language models, and those printed. Although AI language models strive to ensure the privacy of the individual by eliminating information that could potentially reveal the person’s identity, re-identification attacks are possible, which equip an adversary to restoring participants’ anonymized data, such as the vulnerable data provided to language models at the worst case researchers provide publicly and retrievable tweets or data from the 2018 MS MARCO conference, a consortium of hosting particularly information (e.g., film characters) into AI language models.

The data environment surrounding AI language models provides both opportunities and risks, especially with respect to the potential impacts of these systems on society. 5. Conclusion

This co-created policy brief represents one effort toward responsible AI development and aims to inform global partners and policymakers about this emerging field and its potential benefits and harms for society. Recommendations for AI research labs, AI developers, and civil society follow throughout the brief. We invite feedback and further partnership in this endeavor and see an opportunity to develop robust solutions to move the field toward a safer, more accurate, and more just communication environment. As with any sociotechnical effort, realizing the full promise of trustworthy AI calls for an interdisciplinary approach that centers human agency and diverse perspectives to understand and build inclusive, laudable futures. The mechanisms put forward in this report are designed to offer that: a complementary set of interdisciplinary frameworks to promote methods of verifying language model outputs for social value, to articulate and mitigate disproportionate risks to marginalized communities.

In recognition of AI’s critical role in communication, OpenAI partnered with nonprofit research institute Data & Society to create Towards Trustworthy AI Development: Mechanisms for Supporting Verifiable Claims in Language Models. This policy brief draws on insights from the field, informed by multidisciplinary conversations with experts across the AI researcher, industry, and governance communities. Ample challenges and opportunities lie ahead, yet AI can be designed and employed to further equitable access to information, enrich public discourse, and facilitate cooperative democratic governance. To all of these ends, the Trustworthy AI Development Mechanisms initiative presents a model of AI accountability that centers harm reduction and verification of system outputs against verifiable, socially verified information spaces.
