The Importance of Human Writing in the Age of AI

1. The Rise of AI Writing

If an AI is designed or evolved to write news or knowledge-led content similar to a human journalist but built based on perception, there would be a profound change in the human perception system, a protocol formed in the flowing temporal cognitive process. One of the critical research intentions in neuroscience is to explain how the cognitive brain works in a mathematics or logic-like rule-based process in terms of optimization of complex neural networks, and why such a mathematics-like rule could explain the perception information with time. In 1992, the inevitable close-coupling of computation and special relativity (SR) forces a change in the foundation of computation from a mathematical point set occurrence to a rule-based occurrence in events occurring with the minimum time of Planck-scale.

Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented rise in various artificial intelligence (AI) systems which attempt to generate human-like knowledge by one communication method or another. AI is expected to change our daily routine quickly, providing many services from helping business communication like human secretaries to directly producing stories by publisher companies as a kind of short-text journalist. Besides the expectations of prominent creative AI entities such as painters and poets in the future, no attention has been paid to whether AI would write news and other knowledge-level contents the same way humans do in their daily routine, and what the influence would be from the perspectives of epistemology and knowledge management. To the best of our knowledge, such philosophical questions and discussions have not been well investigated in the traditional AI-related research communities.

2. Limitations of AI Writing

The issue of direct understanding of the partner – the audience or potential beneficiaries of the essay, book, or advertisement – is a very important distinction between AI-based writing and human writing. Specifically, AI models are trained on data, whereas human writers or content creators have direct experience with their language and can attempt to relate to others who also have direct experience with that language. In this respect, AI does nothing but reproduce information that it has previously observed. Therefore, the way that the AI model learns is crucial. If the AI has never seen language that might exacerbate models of social inequalities or that goes against the objectives of the model’s programmed learning, a rational AI should still be able to reproduce that latter content. Indeed, the silicon-based reader will have no value system until we, its creators, decide to build such a system into the model itself.

Although AI is rapidly improving and can do many things that it couldn’t do a decade ago, it still cannot write in a way that humans can understand. Moreover, the learning of language that an AI “does” to generate “human-like” passages does not imply understanding. On the contrary, I have argued elsewhere that AI can only approximate human writing using clever tricks that generate otherwise arbitrary outputs based on standard error metrics. As a related issue, AI can neither learn to be ethical nor understand ethics itself. This implies that AI writing can, at best, be biased toward the ethical backgrounds of the human authors of the AI algorithms. But ultimately, derived AI writing would take the form of unanimity – that is, it would not be possible to let people vote on the best or only appropriate AI-based text because, as in this recent example of DeepFakes, even the expert human observers cannot be certain.

3. The Human Touch in Writing

The story of knowledge has three essential steps: writing, calculation, and meaning. It is important to write, to say, to express to oneself or to others in different degrees of elaboration ideas and logics, streets and inner paths, signals in traffic, instructions, persuasions, contexts, statements, and accounts in composing meaning. The importance of this structure is determined, on the one hand, by the fact that meaning is one of the most advanced forms of human mental activity, as it can be distributed and expressed in conventional language. From this, the conceptual design, the composition of logos, emerges. On the other hand, it is determined by the fact that, in a broader sense, meaning is the intellectual cement that holds society to our world because it observes, explains, and concludes.

The third highest form of mental activity (after direct education and experience) is conversation. This concept determines the formulas that form the basis of all types of communication – personalized or anonymized – on social platforms. It is the evolution of the phenomenon of communicative action in new areas. It is part of the constant expansion of human senses. A great deal of digital original content is generated by the millions of conversations and the enormous number of comments, feedback loops, rumors, small talk, in different languages and on different topics, representing a combination of skill, knowledge, information, and creativity. Knowledge and information are two different concepts. Information is unprocessed raw material that needs a certain kind of action to qualify as knowledge. Information alone is not transformative. Processed information – actioned information – may be transformative. There can be no knowledge, however, without words and accounts.

4. Advantages of Human Writing

Despite not speaking Chinese, the professor conveyed the corresponding Chinese questions to a word book found in the room. With its help, he formed the Chinese answers that he passed on. He did not understand the questions or welfare, and the book was an algorithm of translation. A person outside the room who interacted by asking questions might well take the book as something clever to speak Chinese. But Searle, on the other hand, did not quite understand what was asked and what was answered. The philosopher came to the conclusion that the room, seen from outside, could seem to understand the written Chinese. But it was a simulation, a very elaborate imitation, as in the lane-passage analogy made by René Descartes in the 17th century.

In 1981, John Searle, an American philosopher and professor at the University of California, Berkeley, issued the Chinese Room argument that defended the power of human writing over the potential of AI. The philosopher imagined a thought experiment inside a room that spoke only Chinese. Searle received questions in Chinese through a small window and had access to another window where the answers were delivered.

The first, and most important, advantage of human writing is that it is a human language. And thus, many things are still above the ability of AI to perform. Writing can be serious or in jest. It can stick to the conventions of the language or not. It can be formal or informal. It can bring the signature, the panic.

5. Embracing the Power of Human Expression

The whole thrust of this special issue in the IEEE Transactions on Technology in Learning, on the importance of handwriting, is to convey the importance of embracing human creativity within the realm of human expression. The list of contributors confirms their diversity across homes, languages, logos, and institutions. Our insights on how teachers have embedded human creativity into the process of learning are equally diverse. Each sub-issue we will address in our summary atlaves is relevant to your classrooms, your students before you, and your own creativity. We have already seen unexpected beauty in our preliminary results: as an example, we can now trace the personal and interpersonal traits of our contributors to the print and script we use to handwrite.

It is time for us to understand the unique role of human creativity, appreciate our own expressiveness, and find a balance between nurturing and embracing the multitude of tools provided by algorithms and our own human creativity. What is possible in the realm of human creativity? The outcome of human creativity is so diverse and immensely varied across people that it can be overwhelming. We have music, art, literature, films, language, and some would even argue all forms of human endeavor like science, technology, and discovery are driven by human creativity. In my view, it is the ability to take inputs from disparate sources, look at them from a new perspective, find common ground, and create something entirely different than what you started with that defines human creativity.
