The Importance of Case Study Presentations

1. Introduction

To provide a framework for thinking through a problem and of course, recognizing if the solution to the problem will be effective set a solid foundation for self-development in conducting case study. It will help students (and even lecturer) to think more critically and creatively to produce a new method that is better than before. This method must be able to increase the percentage of success. By conducting repetitive practices, we can ensure the quality of our method is at a satisfying level. And it’s possible to use other methods of the same case study but compare the result between the new and the old method. This will indirectly increase the confidence level of the student when answering case study question in the exam. Confidence and critical thinking skills are two important elements in studying case. Confidence will ensure the right decision is made. Failure to have confidence, the student will be reluctant and indecisive. Decision making skill is formed from the experience of thinking critical to a problem.

Though the case study presentation involved different methods of specific discipline, there are always acts as if they are wrong in doing the tasks and activities. Unfortunately that lead to failure and discouragement. And therefore, there isn’t any specific or standard guideline or method that will ensure they are successful. But we can always try doing it by one method and modify it based on our experience afterward. If we are following the standard method or format of case study presentation, it’s actually quite simple. First, we should identify the case. Then, we need to define the steps that will be taken. Next is implementation of the steps and finally, the result whether it is success or failure.

2. Background and Objectives

The assignment of preparing a case study to a group of students has been practiced in education for quite some time. It is one of a few methods being used to help students acquire knowledge of the real situation by analyzing and solving the problems. Case study is usually an intensive analysis of a particular individual unit or a society stressing developmental factors in relation to context. It will help students find the relevance of the knowledge that they have acquired earlier with the real situation and apply it to the problem in the case study, therefore enhancing their knowledge. The conventional way of assigning students for case study is by just instructing them to do it individually and there will be no presentation session to be carried out later on. Usually, all the benefits of the case study will end when the student has completed their analysis and handing it to the instructor. All the learning process will also just end there and there will not be any additional knowledge gained by the students. Therefore, learning case study will become just another way of passing the assignment.

3. Methodology

3.2 Design of Case Studies Furthermore, it is noted that a case study can be constructed around a set of several cases, which may not use the same method of data collection, to be compared to using a single method on a single case (Lee, 1994). Data can be provided from one of 4 different types of designs including an exploratory, and a single-instrumental case. This will depict different data within different complexities of a case. The common data sources to be used will be interviews, observations, documents, and previously recorded audio-visual material (Yin, 1984). He also suggests the use of triangulation and building a priori theoretical in a case, in which these methods would be used.

3.1 Descriptive Research Some researchers, such as Yin (1984), and Lee (1994) suggest that every research design should be based upon a research question, and/or hypothesis. However, descriptive research is often used as a basis for formulating more sophisticated research (Hakim, 1987). It is also a way that a research can be easily digested, and presentation of a research will be highly effective (Ghauri and Gronhaug, 2002). Therefore, descriptive research is an important first step for the case study researcher (Hakim, 1987). This can take place in the form of a pilot study.

The researcher, selection of the organizations, selection of the interviewees, and data collection inclusive of interview questions and a process of how the interviews will be transcribed. A smaller consideration of presentation analysis will be investigated, but site, case study, and group.

4. Findings and Analysis

4.2 Problems and constraints It is defined as problems faced during the project while constraints are the limitations of the project. Identification of problems and constraints is crucial to ensure the project runs smoothly. Problem statements will symbolize the project failure with unsatisfied results if they are not solved. Most of the case studies have taken a research and development method to improve the existing water management. Thus, by stating all the problems and constraints, it can avoid other projects from making the same mistakes and become a guideline for new projects coming.

4.1 Impacts and implications of urban water management Findings of our research show that most of the case studies had negative and positive impacts. Positive impacts include implemented technology, controlling water quality, and awareness on water issues provide great advantage on urban water management. The negative impacts occur when non-implementation of recommended methods, high cost, and the result that doesn’t fulfill the aim from the starting. At the same time, the implications that can be taken from the project in the future show the community and government commitment in enhancing the urban water management.

Main findings from the findings related to six categories emerged from the case studies had identified in tables presented in chapter were analyzed as following.

5. Conclusion and Recommendations

Interpretations – At this stage, students try to summarize and understand the situation in a few lines. They may develop shortcuts that might be helpful for easy remembering of parts of the case. This can be possible if they mark the situation with some colored markers or traces. But the important thing is not to alter the situation from real facts. This might be sometimes difficult because the situation may seem hard or too complex to understand. In that case, students need to get help from a person who has good experience in understanding situations.

It is difficult and almost impossible to go to a site and collect data. For making a direct approach to the situation, the best way would be to collect data of the place/situation which one is studying. It can be effective and helpful if the person can get soft copy like video, audio, or document interviews, and also direct wordings of the people involved in the situation. This method can be done in most case study situations.

A case study is an important part of a student’s academic life. In order to do assignments on case studies, the student must know and understand the methods used. In order to complete a case study successfully, there are many aspects that are important, such as the method of doing the case study, which might be related to upgrading skills or knowledge/career. For it to be effective, the student needs to apply the exact situation.
