The Importance of Cardiac Nursing

1. Introduction to Cardiac Nursing

Cardiac nursing is a nursing specialty that works with patients who suffer from various conditions of the cardiovascular system. Cardiac nurses help treat conditions such as unstable angina, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and cardiac dysrhythmia under the direction of a cardiologist. Cardiac nurses perform many different tasks. They monitor and record the condition of their patients constantly and help administer medication and other various treatments. In many cases, they will help with rehabilitation with those who have had cardiac interventions or help to prevent and educate people on avoiding cardiac disease. A patient may see these nurses before a heart attack, during recovery of a heart attack, or if they are experiencing symptoms that relate to a heart-based illness. The process begins with the patient being checked into the facility. It is the cardiac nurse’s job to make sure not only that the correct procedures are being done but also to make sure that the patient feels supported and well informed about the processes that are going on. In the modern nursing system, the use of the internet and other technologies to disseminate information on various illnesses has started to become widespread, and cardiac nursing is a field within which people are often directed to the internet for help and guidance. As the internet improves, so too will the capabilities of cardiac nurses to help inform and educate those who are at risk. Information technology and the systems that cardiac nurses operate with are quickly evolving, and so cardiac nursing is a field that will always present new and interesting challenges to those who work within it. The main challenges in the field arise when new procedures are systematically implemented or when new technologies that can change the ways in which cardiac nurses need to work are installed in a healthcare facility. The continuous development and improvement of medical technology means that the capabilities for saving lives are much greater, but it also puts pressure on nursing staff to constantly be learning, too. So, cardiac nursing is a field within nursing in general and in medical practice overall that is a space both for new practices and the care and for the systems that underpin the theoretical knowledge within the world.

2. Key Responsibilities of Cardiac Nurses

Completing the tasks assigned in a timely manner is equally important. The nurses are often charged with many duties that range from the general care of the patients to the nursing administrative work.

Ensuring that other junior staff have the knowledge of practicing the evidence-based practice is another key responsibility. This is where treatment procedures are based on the scientific medical research. This is important because it helps in the standardized treatment and proven diagnostic protocols across the entire cardiac unit. Also, a cardiac nurse will be involved in operating and monitoring the medical equipment that is used in the diagnosis and treatment of the heart ailments. All medical equipment that is used in the cardiac ward, ranging from the ECG machines to the defibrillators, they all should be kept in good and perfect working conditions. Also, maintenance of the equipment and regular checks to ensure their workability is key to the safety and efficiency in the workflow within the ward and during the treatment exercises.

As a cardiac nurse, there are a set of responsibilities or rather duties that you are expected to undertake. First and foremost, the general care of the patients is the most important responsibility. This includes taking care of the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of the patients. This might include giving medications as per the direction of the cardiologists, helping in managing pain that comes as a result of the illness. Also, taking good care of the patients’ personal and confidential information is another very important responsibility. This means that a nurse should make sure that they follow all the correct procedures as set by the medical policies in protecting the patient’s clinical records, lab results, and any other information that concerns the ailment of the patient.

Cardiac nurses hold pivotal roles in the care and treatment of patients suffering from heart diseases. They are part of the team that includes cardiologists, cardiac pharmacists, and other healthcare providers. Since heart diseases are on the rise due to changes in lifestyles and other risk factors like high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and increased cases of diabetes, cardiac nurses are now being required to provide more day-to-day care. Also, advancement in the technology field has led to better ways of doing things in the nursing practice and specifically in the cardiac wards.

3. Essential Skills and Knowledge for Cardiac Nursing

The good cardiac nurse is not only knowledgeable about the latest types of equipment and care, but also has to have a multitude of skills. In many ways, nurses who are working in clinics and any other clinical setting have to be a combination of teacher, as well as a caregiver. This is because in many cases the patient will need to actually get instructions on what to do, or in some cases what not to do. Also, the family members will also have to be educated on how to care for their loved ones. One of the first essential skills a cardiac nurse will have to learn is good time management. This is because of the fact that many cardiac nurses will have to care for a lot of patients at once. It is highly necessary for the nurse to assess the patients and then also administer the care as quickly as possible. Also, the nurse has to be able to identify any of the emergencies at a moment’s notice. This is why this particular skill is so important. In order to learn how to manage time correctly, a good cardiac nurse will take the time to look into classes which will help them show time management skills. In these classes, the nurse can develop effective habits of setting priorities and also have ways to overcome any types of time wasters. What are some good time management classes? Well, all that the nurse has to do is look locally at either a hospital or any other type of clinical setting. Many times these classes will be offered in house. This is a perfect way for nurses to not only get acclimated to the different types of standards in that facility, but also have a chance to network and make new friends.

4. Challenges and Opportunities in Cardiac Nursing

Cardiac nursing today is a challenging and demanding field, and one that the experts say will continue to be so in the future. The most common challenges faced by professionals in the field of cardiac nursing are the high incidence rates of cardiac diseases, the increased complexity in patient care due to technological advances and cost containment, just to mention a few. As a complex field that is constantly evolving with new breakthroughs in treatments, technology, and research, there are several opportunities and advantages for cardiac nurses. The greatest opportunity right now is private duty nursing. It is a growing field because there is more emphasis than ever before on disease prevention and patient education. Also, there has never been a higher demand in private duty nursing in history. Due to a national shortage of nurse teachers, exciting and rewarding teaching positions are currently available for many experienced cardiac nurses who wish to share their expertise and real work experiences with up and coming nursing students who will one day be taking their places in the dynamic, fast-paced world of cardiac nursing. Similarly, advancements in robotic surgery have also opened a new avenue for career growth in the field of cardiac nursing. As healthcare continues to evolve, so too will the face of cardiac nursing. Nurses who successfully adapt to ongoing changes will find their careers are always on the path to a new, exciting direction in discoveries and innovative therapies for heart patients. And these translate into more opportunities, higher paid jobs, and satisfaction in one’s career in cardiac nursing.

5. Advancements in Cardiac Nursing Practice

All in all, the emergence of the innovative telecardiology and leadless pacing methodologies within cardiac nursing practice means exciting times. By continuing to pioneer in the field through rigorous research and development, collectively we aim to support a dynamic platform for universal nursing practices that put patient dignity and care quality at the forefront. Isn’t the future of medicine and healthcare an exciting place! Exciting times certainly lie ahead for cardiac nursing and advancements in technological practice.

In my next commentary presentation, I shall be moving further into an insight analysis of another such advancement called “leadless pacing.” With an aging population in the United Kingdom and an increasing global prevalence of different types of arrhythmias, the implantation of pacemakers is becoming more and more common. Recently, with the introduction of leadless pacing, the world’s smallest, minimally invasive pacemaker, millions of patients have been given the chance to benefit from this innovative technology. In the long term, not only will patients be able to experience an improved quality of life, but also for medical staff, there will be a reduction in procedure and recovery times. The fact that leadless pacing avoids the complications that can arise from a pacing system with leads and being able to be implanted indefinitely by being attached to the heart muscle itself means that this advancement in pacemaker technology could foretell the future of pacing therapies for younger patients.

With the big leaps and bounds that have taken place within the healthcare sector as a whole, nurse practitioners in cardiac care have been able to leverage advancements in technology in their practice. One such advancement has been “telecardiology,” which is an approach within telemedicine where telecommunication systems and information technology are used to transmit critical heart health information from one location to another. This means that people who do not live in proximity to hospitals in urban areas can receive expert cardiology consultations and diagnoses, which have been informed by the transmission of data over long distances. It is easy to see why this has transformed the landscape for many patients living in remote communities far from city centers. Moreover, it has enabled patients, often for the first time, to fit their medication regime into their own routine and reduced emergency admissions to the hospital.
