Effective Structure and Content for a PhD Research Proposal

1. Introduction to the Research Proposal

1. Introduction This chapter provides an overview of the entire research proposal. The first part of this research proposal covers the introduction. This section comprises a detailed introduction in which the background of the research problem is given. In addition, the research questions or hypothesis are also expressed. This part also includes presenting the objectives, the potential contribution, exploring the scope of the research, as well as defining the key terms. In other words, the overall assessment of the introduction is to explain the aim of the research. Besides, it will also provide a rationale for the research design. In most cases, designing a proposal for a research exercise is part of pre-research preparation and assessment. The most significant component of this proposal is the time when the proposal is assessed. Essentially, researchers engage in several mechanisms to systematically design opportunities and sufficiently describe the characteristics of the research process. One of them is the study population and the criteria used to include them.

In addition, the research approach and data collection and formulation are also determined when designing the study. In the end, the researcher must judge the positive and negative attributes of the research exercise and finally prepare ethical approval for research considerations. A research proposal is essentially a process in which the researcher focuses on the main elements and deals with methodological issues through the integration of research issues. The proposal here follows the process of the research exercise and essentially relates to the conceptual framework, as well as the measurement strategy. In addition, away from the elements of the research, this design proposal also included a detailed study design.

2. Literature Review and Theoretical Framework

Literature Review and Theoretical Framework (15%)

This section of your proposal requires you to have completed an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the relevant literature and to have subsequently developed a theoretical framework, or frameworks, to underpin your study. The review of the literature is the most important aspect of your theoretical framework; it must be as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible for your discipline or area of study. Your literature review should include—and not be limited to—the following:

• Identify previous empirical studies and other research that is relevant to the research area or problem and development of the topic in relation to the work already done by others and the development of new research questions.

• Discuss any theoretical or conceptual framework that has been used to guide the work;

• Discuss methodologies or empirical strategies that were used;

• Summarize the findings from those previous studies;

• Underpin the gap in existing literature with a detailed rationale for the selection of research topic based on the review of previous studies; that is, previous empirical studies with comparable literature in your field; and

• Incorporate citations and references into the literature review from the very start of the dissertation work, ensuring that each citation is correctly formatted.

In this section, Theoretical, conceptual and methodological framework: present the theoretical, conceptual and methodological underpinnings of your project; signal those that will be drawn on later and, in more detail, and outline what the gaps in the available literature are; and

• Theoretical or conceptual framework: Depending upon what issue or issues you are proposing to investigate, you should briefly explain whether your research will be based on a particular theoretical model and/or concepts. In other words, explain why your research questions are important from a conceptual or theoretical point of view.

Note: When designing a research project, one or more theoretical frameworks will be considered to be foundational to the research strategy. This dialogue should be included in this section and is the foundational step towards formulating good research questions. It should also clarify what empirical questions you need to ask next in order to yield answers to the deeper theoretical questions you have raised about the topic.

3. Research Design and Methodology

3.1 Research Design

The research aims and objectives will be addressed through the overall approach of the research strategy used. The research will adopt a qualitative research method to achieve the stipulated aims and objectives as indicated in section 2.2.1.

3.2 Data Collection Techniques

The research will use primary data with the technique of semi-structured interviews being used. These interviews will be administered face-to-face given their length and the need for digital interaction between the respondent who will be completing necessary tasks.

3.3 Sampling

The participants are selected through a purposive sampling approach ensuring the relevance of their professional expertise in the utilization and management of educational resources.

3.4 Data Analysis

In research where a phenomenological approach is used to capture lived experiences of individuals, a thematic analysis is recommended because of the complexity of human emotion. provide a six-phase model for conducting research using thematic analysis. As this research is intended to be qualitative in nature, the process of critical self-reflection and peer scrutiny that comes with using this model is entirely appropriate. The phases of every thematic analysis study can be completed over a series of iterations, enabling iterative data saturation and a comprehensive understanding of the data collected. These phases permit a thorough and meticulous process, each informing the subsequent steps and leading to a comprehensive analysis.

3.4 Justification of Research Design and Methodology

Secondary data methods may include desktop research or observations. However, limitations in available data in addition to the research objectives meant this approach would not be appropriate. Ethical considerations are a core consideration and are applied to ensure the health and safety of participants and researchers. Given the nature of the research topic, exercises are proposed ensuring a level of ergonomic management following ethical guidelines. The data collected will be anonymization of participant data, secure password-protected storage of information, and strictly used for the purposes of this research.

4. Significance and Contribution of the Study

“Real research” has always to be informed by some desire to know, whether that be personal out of one’s own drive, or because the researcher is in a department that has a considerable involvement in a particular area and wants to develop an argument after primary interview with an interested ‘community’. The PhD proposal should identify with some clarity what that desire to know is to be found independent of how the research paradigm is justified. Refreshing interest in teaching and learning is fundamentally important. As well as possibly making changes to the daily practice in our context, this study may also provide a contrast that can be used for some time and in other contexts for discussion and testing. If for no other reason than the ethical, practical and personal interest dimension, the major purpose of this study is to see the extent to which the findings correlate with earlier work and to provide the ‘missing answers’ that follow on from what has been done.

In terms of current research literature, and to the knowledge of the student, there appears to be very little, recent work concerned with natural day-to-day language use that is not in the business sphere, and no previous work that includes comparisons-at-language use between language teachers and their learners, specifically in this context. There is a more philosophical debate concerning the nature of the relationship between the ‘L1’ and the ‘L2’ and implementing L1 within L2 usage, but again the focus of this older work is primarily educational linguistics; second language acquisition or applied linguistics which have rather disregarded the ‘ontological’ aspect of the ‘Language’ approaches in language teaching/learning-processes and their reflection of the theory of communication/translation as presented in a table, as explained in the introduction.

5. Timeline and Budget for the Research

In a final section of the research proposal that should focus on the timeline and budget, the author specifies the period during which different aspects of the research will be carried out. In particular, the overall research will take three academic years, the first of which will be dedicated to background reading and analysis of a public data set, the second to interviews with professionals and practitioners, and the third to writing and internal examination. Importantly, the first half of that third year will be spent attending to the corrections suggested in the systematic literature review, with the second half of that final year being allocated solely to writing and examination. The work of the different funded research associates (RAs) will span the first two academic years, with some overlap with the researcher in the third year so that they can learn from each other and through this enrich the output of the study.

While the costs of training, travel and subsistence are set directly by the Economic and Social Research Council for this studentship, a budget needs to be provided for the RAs and the convening of focus groups. Each RA is to receive a Writer’s Calendar rate for all their activity – between £9,240 and £14,500 (to be confirmed). This reflects an expectation that, during the nine-month contracts, each RA will spend half of their time on project work, and the remaining 50% on writing up their work for publication. For the time spent on project activities, RA1 (Systematic Review) will receive costs of £568 per month for travel. Costs for trips will be approximately £650. Data analysis software from Nvivo will cost a total of £5,994.60. All resources from the library and IT are included in the larger subscript.
