Importance of Public Health in BMC

1. Introduction

Public health, the new ideology of public health, has put the main focus on numerous aspects of the health status in our communities and what determines the health status of a community. Health care was the entity that concentrated on the health of individuals as opposed to the health of the community. The new idea is to shift our focus to health or the health issue/risk of a community as a whole. This is a radical movement away from the historical and traditional approach that actually looked to diminish risk or health issue on a one-to-one ratio. An example would be to decrease the number of obese persons in Britain, opposed to a previous aim of who would substitute a person attempting to find a change in diet of an obese person.

2. Role of BMC in Public Health

Patient care and research activities have an indirect bearing on public health initiatives. The main focus of preventive activities will be expected from some CSR activities from rich people in the surrounding area, as there is a recent provision in section 135 of the Companies Act. Though it’s difficult, if some part of the public hospital can be converted into a center for a specific disease, the results of all research projects will be implemented there. Overall, it’s difficult but not impossible. A guiding philosophy should be change for good. Good change is never abrupt. It’s always slow but may be a painful experience. This philosophy of change is well taught in public health, and the community is hoping for it from the doctors of BMC.

BMC, being a tertiary care center, is loaded with the work of patient care, research, and teaching. In the era of evidence-based medicine, doctors learn to adhere to treatment guidelines, which are usually formulated from research done in well-controlled environments. Patient care has become advanced in terms of diagnosing diseases; however, primary or secondary prevention is often neglected. All of these lead doctors to think that the probability of curing a particular disease when the same patient comes again should be higher than the first instance. With research mainly focused on curative aspects, the results should be clearer identification of diseases and better treatment modalities. All these scenarios require a better understanding of community health needs and specific disease occurrence factors. Here, the role of public health is key. An institute that is both a hospital and a teaching center should implement preventive and promotive activities considering its own patients as the target population. This is possible by involving medical students and resident doctors in various projects. If a doctor completes his training tenure with an understanding that a particular disease occurs in a particular age group with certain risk factors and comorbid conditions, he is more likely to be curious once he faces the same disease in his own patient. With doubts about modern medicine, patients show high resistance to change. So doctors should be aware of recent guidelines, but it needs more persuasion to change the treatment pattern. With various research results at hand, there should be adequate exchange of information among the group. All of these can be systematic in BMC with the formation of research groups for different diseases. However, it is not to be forgotten that everything should be documented, and there must be an assessment both for the treatment given to the patient and the act of research itself. This can be a good practical exercise for medical students. Public health holds the best tool to implement all these activities, i.e., Epidemiology. It is said that any activity has its own success if there is good management of resources. With quite high-quality human resources deploying various activities, it should be monitored whether they are reaching the desired results. These will all open the doors for various job opportunities for public health professionals.

As health is a non-issue of any individual, the global dimensions of public health within a context of global development and equity are an issue that is gaining increasing attention.

The ultimate goal of public health is to improve the health of the people by focusing on disease prevention, health promotion, and protection from environmental threats. As a concept that takes into consideration the welfare of the entire society, its relevance is essential in today’s global context. Public health encompasses a wide range of services that are aimed at providing healthcare that is at once efficient and effective. It is an integrated science that attempts to prevent diseases and thereby prolong the life of an individual through societal-based organizations made by the government, private sector organizations, and public interests.
