Importance of Public Health in BMC

1. Introduction

There have been other causes or factors in the shift in our focus to the health of the community. One is the demand by the public to recognize the factors below the surface that are affecting their health. This includes a range of issues from the biological to the psychosocial. The demand has led to an increase in the quantity and quality of the information on the health issue/risk of a community. This includes vital statistics, an analysis of the health status of a community, and the events or factors that have an influence on the health status. Another key factor in meeting society’s expectation is better surveillance and information systems for reliable and timely data to determine health issues in communities.

Public health, the new ideology of public health, has put the main focus on numerous aspects of the health status in our communities and what determines the health status of a community. Health care was the entity that concentrated on the health of individuals as opposed to the health of the community. The new idea is to shift our focus to health or the health issue/risk of a community as a whole. This is a radical movement away from the historical and traditional approach that actually looked to diminish risk or health issue on a one-to-one ratio. An example would be to decrease the number of obese persons in Britain, opposed to a previous aim of who would substitute a person attempting to find a change in diet of an obese person.

2. Role of BMC in Public Health

Patient care and research activities have an indirect bearing on public health initiatives. The main focus of preventive activities will be expected from some CSR activities from rich people in the surrounding area, as there is a recent provision in section 135 of the Companies Act. Though it’s difficult, if some part of the public hospital can be converted into a center for a specific disease, the results of all research projects will be implemented there. Overall, it’s difficult but not impossible. A guiding philosophy should be change for good. Good change is never abrupt. It’s always slow but may be a painful experience. This philosophy of change is well taught in public health, and the community is hoping for it from the doctors of BMC.

BMC, being a tertiary care center, is loaded with the work of patient care, research, and teaching. In the era of evidence-based medicine, doctors learn to adhere to treatment guidelines, which are usually formulated from research done in well-controlled environments. Patient care has become advanced in terms of diagnosing diseases; however, primary or secondary prevention is often neglected. All of these lead doctors to think that the probability of curing a particular disease when the same patient comes again should be higher than the first instance. With research mainly focused on curative aspects, the results should be clearer identification of diseases and better treatment modalities. All these scenarios require a better understanding of community health needs and specific disease occurrence factors. Here, the role of public health is key. An institute that is both a hospital and a teaching center should implement preventive and promotive activities considering its own patients as the target population. This is possible by involving medical students and resident doctors in various projects. If a doctor completes his training tenure with an understanding that a particular disease occurs in a particular age group with certain risk factors and comorbid conditions, he is more likely to be curious once he faces the same disease in his own patient. With doubts about modern medicine, patients show high resistance to change. So doctors should be aware of recent guidelines, but it needs more persuasion to change the treatment pattern. With various research results at hand, there should be adequate exchange of information among the group. All of these can be systematic in BMC with the formation of research groups for different diseases. However, it is not to be forgotten that everything should be documented, and there must be an assessment both for the treatment given to the patient and the act of research itself. This can be a good practical exercise for medical students. Public health holds the best tool to implement all these activities, i.e., Epidemiology. It is said that any activity has its own success if there is good management of resources. With quite high-quality human resources deploying various activities, it should be monitored whether they are reaching the desired results. These will all open the doors for various job opportunities for public health professionals.

Last section described how the healthcare system has evolved over time, especially the training of doctors. It has faced several revisions according to the community needs. The field of public health is closely interlinked with the medical system. While medical education produces skilled human resources, it is the public health tools that guide how, where, and when to use those resources.

3. Challenges in Public Health

At the beginning of the essay, we’ve seen the relevance of public health in the city of BMC. However, as much as it is relevant nowadays, there are challenges awaiting public health in BMC. The documents shown in the relevance of public health mainly focus on city challenges in modernization. There are seven challenges identified: health sector reform, socioeconomic and health inequality, demographic and epidemiological change, globalization and health security, food safety and nutrition, environmental change and its impacts. From the aspect of public health relevance, development economics theory can be an appropriate theory as it explains the sequence of development and its implications on health. Public health improvement is often associated with later stages of development; however, it may not be an automatic result of growth. From the challenges identified, health sector reform and globalization will have implications on public health outside the health sector. Both of these challenges are initiated from the modernization process of the country. Public health has been closely associated with the preventive function to improve health status.

4. Strategies for Improving Public Health

The next step is to design a health policy oriented towards the most pressing health issue ascertained from the community assessment. An effective policy would be an act that provides added health resources and improved health conditions for communities who bear the brunt of specific health disparities. However, to avoid organic public health approaches by states, interested parties might have to act as lobbyists to ensure policies are implemented by the state executive and/or administrative rule with at least the amount of modifications. To guarantee that their efforts result in a positive change for the targeted communities, a formal assessment comparing intent to actual outcomes should follow. This will ensure that the most vulnerable populations actually benefited from added resources and that health disparities were lessened.

Starting at the local government level, the necessary first step to implementing effective public health measures for BMC is to assess the current state of public health for Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities. Before using the billions of dollars to be assigned through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 60% for which states have specific instructions, those in charge must know where current health priorities lie. Legislators should figure out what their constituents consider to be the major health problems and determine which are solvable. Measurements should be monitored over time to assess whether or not health goals are being met.

5. Conclusion

Various threats to global public health were discussed to give insight into the extensiveness of issues in public health and to further stress the importance of global public health in today’s world. A special section was devoted to war and terrorism to show the detrimental effects that intentional acts of violence can have on the public health of affected societies. This was done with the recent war in Iraq in mind to give a more current example of war effects on public health. Finally, public health was tied to the human rights approach through an outline of how the path to global public health is an advocacy for the right to health and the dignity of human life. This linked the concepts discussed in the essay to an underlying principle that is fundamental to the human race.

This essay has sought to address some of the factors that are currently affecting global public health. An overview was made regarding the quest for global public health that is free of disparities, with a special focus on the plight of developing nations. The issue of global governance in public health was touched upon, with an emphasis on establishing global standards for health and the need for coordination between agencies of global governance in reconciling public health with other global issues. The issue of health and sustainable development was explored through a discussion on the awareness of public health in the context of global changes to the environment and economy, along with the role of public health in achieving health through sustainable development.

While general health has significantly improved in the last few decades through the use of scientific research and technology, the disparities in health across societies and global population groups have resulted in a growing concern in the global reach of public health. With the given economic constraints in most developing countries and the increased cost of healthcare in developed countries, innovative action is required to ensure that various global societies are not confined to different levels of health. As health is a non-issue of any individual, the global dimensions of public health within a context of global development and equity are an issue that is gaining increasing attention.

The ultimate goal of public health is to improve the health of the people by focusing on disease prevention, health promotion, and protection from environmental threats. As a concept that takes into consideration the welfare of the entire society, its relevance is essential in today’s global context. Public health encompasses a wide range of services that are aimed at providing healthcare that is at once efficient and effective. It is an integrated science that attempts to prevent diseases and thereby prolong the life of an individual through societal-based organizations made by the government, private sector organizations, and public interests.
