1. Introduction to Black History Studies

Studying black history promotes racial tolerance and understanding. While tolerance is necessary for an equitable society, appreciation of the diversity of cultures and people, as well as greater understanding, can considerably increase the legitimacy and stability of our social systems. The national observance of Black History began with its founding by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Dr. Woodson, the son of former slaves, studied the many black accomplishments and achievements. His purpose was to bring them to the attention of the world. He saw and believed that all races had contributed to America’s uniqueness. He wanted to show its people the importance of its black history. It was his belief that by learning about their own roots, America’s black youth would be inspired to believe they could accomplish anything.

Since the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, black history has been an increasingly important field in historical and educational studies. Its goal is to counteract the tendency of many people to be guilty of overlooking, if not forgetting, the history of discrimination that blacks endured from the days of slavery to the present. The failure to study the past results in a failure to understand the present, and lessons that can be drawn from the successful struggle for civil rights can help to eliminate present-day inequalities and prevent future conflicts. In short, black history is important for all Americans and should be given the same respect and recognition as any other ethnic studies program in our educational system.

2. Key Figures and Events in Black History

Nearly every headway in America’s approach to the farmer come into play is due to the leadership of courageous Black Americans. In turn, these ourselves are not only African-Americans, but American civil leaders, American writers, and American history. Their vision is for an America in which all voices and perspectives have the opportunity to thrive in a spirit of inclusiveness and self-expression. The significance of Black History is a collective legacy that is both a mirror into our past as well as an insight into the complicated and ever-evolving landscape of the present day. Their collective efforts and contributions – the result of their struggle, vision, and faith in the possibility of change – have made significant transformations in our society. Their dedication to principle and their vision of a New America distinguish them as people who live fully within our country’s deepest and most profound values. All offer lessons in overcoming adversity and discuss the possibility of reconciliation and unity in the fight. By sharing the legacy of these extraordinary people, Americans from all quarters can change, yet again, the face of America.

From activists to athletes, and writers to warriors, Black Americans have contributed in countless memorable ways to the history and character of the United States. From the Buffalo soldiers to Martin Luther King Jr. to the hip-hop revolutionaries of today, America’s history is brimming with stories of visionary leadership, creativity, and struggle – of ordinary individuals determined to live with dignity and purpose, fighting against enormous odds and redefining what it means to be American. Their stories are stories of courage as well as perseverance, of unyielding spirit and unfailing hope. The resulting history of the United States is a reflection not only of American democracy, but of the struggle of all Americans to make democratic ideals a bright and continually developing reality.

3. Impact of Black History on Modern Society

As you read through some of these, you’ll see that there is a lot more to black history than you may have thought. At the same time, it is important to recognize the significant impact of black history on the world as we know it today and the impact it has had on molding the modern world. Take this into account when you plan your black history essay writing and think of what significance it holds for you, based on your own situation and background. Black history is important, so don’t let it slip through the cracks. Is the emphasis in today’s society on consciousness of one’s own history a good thing or a bad thing? How do Americans “water down” ideas and people from another culture so that they fit in with society at large? What do studies in black history teach black children about their heritage and their future? Do these studies do more harm or good for that particular ethnic group, especially if curricula are built around the stereotypical model?

4. Controversies and Debates in Black History Studies

In examining controversial issues in black history, it would be valuable to consider also controversial issues in American and even world history. Nelson L. Dawson, the first editor of Phylon, noted in a 1940 editorial that Phylon would be a vehicle for discussions of controversial issues involving black people and their place in society. Dawson’s expectation would be just as true today, or more so, if he were the editor of a new black history journal. If the field is to flourish, it must not isolate itself from controversy; indeed, it cannot. Processes of change require both conflict and cooperation, discussion, and often dissent. In our time, the lessons of the civil rights movement have been followed through other movements – social, political, and economic – and no doubt the history of these movements and their significance are subjects of research and analysis.

Debates in black history are both important and timely. As in American history as a whole, many of the latest and sharpest debates in American history are related to racial issues. At present, there is a strong tendency to isolate black history from the broad current in American historiography by means of separate courses, separate lecture series, and separate professional meetings. Such an isolating tendency tends to hamper research and teaching relating to those issues that most seriously affect blacks and their place in American society. Clearly, black history has been exaggerated, minimized, and misread in the past, often to the significant disadvantage of blacks and frequently to the disadvantage of whites.
