The purpose of a standard bibliography is only to document the source and author for a piece of research; the reader does not get an idea of the content of the source, its relevance or quality by reading this list. The annotated bibliography, on the other hand, is designed to give the reader a good idea about the quality and relevancy of the source cited. A good, well-written annotated bibliography is of great use in terms of research as it helps the reader get a good idea about the content and relevance of each source. This results in the retrieval of specific quality information and saves her time. This is usually used to prepare for a large research paper. An expert on the subject area can quickly scan through a good annotated bibliography and know which sources are going to be relevant to the paper at hand. This can save the researcher a lot of time, as browsing through sources in search of specific information can be an arduous, time-consuming task.

The following is a summary of things to know when creating an annotated bibliography: 1. Include the bibliographic information at the top of the page. You can do this in one of two ways. If your list of citations is on something like lined paper you can go back later and type a reference list with the corresponding number, or you can write the reference list on the same page as the annotation. 5. Tips for Writing Effective Annotations

I’ve used the example given in the “how to” section to create my annotation. Overall, the guide was really helpful in forcing me to think critically about the sources I was finding and synthesize the information in my own words. However, I found it easier to write my second annotation because it required me to make an argument about the sources. I almost wish the final product was the first assignment because the sample annotation provided for that was more helpful. Given the chance to do it over, I would start the assignment earlier and go see the instructor for help to improve more. Now though, I feel pretty confident about the AB and I will definitely use it as a resource for different ways to approach future research papers.
