1. Introduction The development of AI technology has brought great changes to various application scenarios. Nowadays, AI technology has been integrated into fields of automatic essay evaluation (AEE) and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). The process of AI participating in essay writing includes two directions. One is the study of AI generating essays directly. It is a natural language processing problem. The solutions also explore many language generation techniques such as machine learning-based methods, template-based methods, and replacement-based language models. The other is an important application of NLP techniques in copying, writing, and revising stages of the essay writing process. How might unanticipated interaction with AI educational systems influence the IPs’ development, or even harm them? Such concerns are not distinctive to those arising in applications of AI to everyday life (beyond education) but their realization at school unlocks new strategies for addressing them.

4. Future Directions and Recommendations

Data was analyzed to reconstruct these multiple and overlapping frameworks and provide researchers and practitioners with a detailed understanding of how AI-assisted writing is being built, adopted, and supported, and of how it might eventually fit with, extend, or contest even more technology-intensive future constructions of student writing. The contributions of this paper are manifold. First, pedagogically, it seeks to offer a bird’s-eye perspective on how two important but different medium-term futures for dissertation writing in higher education are evolving. Second, it brings to the fore some of the very different ways that AI is managing and reshaping student writing supports and could continue to do so.

Here we present views of selected experts to gain insights into how AI and emerging technologies are shaping or might shape the ways that essays are written, reviewed, and assessed. The report adds a systematic review of what is known about how these technologies are reshaping writing practices, particularly in the context of education. Several directions for future research emerged. We draw these out here, grouping them into research, pedagogy, and infrastructure, and then articulate several recommendations for stakeholders who are actively working within or helping to steer these developments in the higher education sector.
