Crafting a Compelling Admissions Essay: Strategies and Techniques

1. Introduction to Admissions Essays

Admissions consultants want to prepare essays that speak and tell stories, not a business letter or a product of research, but an essay that reflects an experience or gives a snapshot of the student’s life. The only concern is that developers are often paid for the services, but they also require guidance. This is very important because the financial dilemma should never cause a student to lose required expertise. A state college brochure states that it is important to write an essay about a topic of high interest. After all, first-year college students are also writing during their lives greater than university students.

Preparing an essay for application and college entrance is not easy; most of these writing assignments require students to write persuasive personal essays. One main reason to remember this is that editors were surprised by the large number of abstracts for this type of essay. A western state, the University of Washington, requires four essays with various word limits and a secretary. For example, the sample essay on the personal statement gives students an idea of what to write and how to promote the article. There are authors who specialize in this type of freelance writing as college consultants.

2. Understanding the Purpose and Audience

Moreover, the expectation for a compelling essay can vary among colleges. If you are applying to a competitive college, you should look to your essay as your opportunity to grab quite so and have your readers put you into the ‘further consideration pool’. You need to get your application before the eyes of a live person! Finally, many applicants feel concerned about discussing themselves…and in a competitive situation…sounding ‘selfish’ or conceited. Admissions people will tell you that they are not looking for the proverbial ‘big shot’. They are searching for a fluent writer, organized thinker, and above all, a real person. True! But that real person can and should feel that both the college and that individual are better off for considering a potential match. And you can honestly feel that!

To prepare to write an essay for evidence, you must go through a process of thinking about your admissions audience and making guesses about what will be potentially ‘compelling’ about you in the minds of this audience. It is important to understand that the admissions process includes both a selection and a decision-making function. The selection process is where admission officers will use data such as test scores and GPA’s to compare you to other students currently enrolled at the university. The more selective the college, the closer you will be compared to your competition and the pickier the college can be. But pickier is a good thing! A college wants students who want them to be the one to join them! The admissions process also includes a ‘decision-making’ function. Admission officers will read your essay to get a sense of who you are and how you will fit into their specific community. Knowing the thoughts behind both of these processes can help you focus on a compelling essay. Your essay, then, needs to reflect this understanding of our process. You should address in your essay their concerns about what they hope for in students as well as their skepticism about a non-promising as but if I was on this year’s admissions committee for MIT (Table 2.1), what might I want to hear in an essay about what being a professional means and/or an essay that demonstrates critical thinking, reading, and writing skills of a potential MIT student? 3. Structuring Your Essay for Impact

If your essay is about your past or present experiences relating to your subject or question, don’t be burdened by how ordinary the topic may seem. Your personal reflection of a subject is accepted as the most disguised form of fiction and the one many readers most love to read. There are many writers who believe that the hero or central character in their essays is the central character, as the case may be, and whose activities dominate the narrative for a long time. A good case that demonstrates not only the example of the story but also the central theme of the character is found in the following opening paragraph to Samuel Johnson’s little story about talking to a stranger.

Most good essays do retain a highly defined focus, partly because the events themselves are quite dramatic. The most effective essays do not deviate from the subject or question; one compelling description, one method, and one compelling description must be united around, centered on, and in some way relevant to your topic. Does this mean that if you do not have a single compelling subject to relate to, you should not write about the subject at all? Not at all. It only means that the reader can see through a claim of a subject or question.

When you have your material and have decided on the point or theme of your essay, the next step is to frame your argument. As in a book, the thesis statement will run anywhere between the first sentence and the last in the opening paragraph, but it is something fairly concrete and indisputable. It must be the result of something and have significance to the person making the statement.

4. Showcasing Your Unique Voice and Perspective

The conclusion is also quite important and can be more than just a summary. In many cases, it can serve as a transition to other elements. You can extend your conclusion with additional context and offer advice, raise questions, and so forth. The conclusion of a statement can also reveal your interest and passion, your personality and goals. For that reason, an excellent conclusion that gives the reader a good sense of who you are and makes the essay memorable and meaningful. If you have given it your all in this statement, you should not need to include an “objective” to summarize your experiences or future plans. These things should be conveyed in the body of the essay and in a summary sense, throughout.

But introspection is challenging and can lead to a clichéd statement of your goals and your future plans. Even an informal essay can be informative, yet a sense of respect for the audience, combined with unique voice and perspective, helps maintain a sense of form and relevance. Quotations or statistics can also be useful in your statement. Although you should use famous quotations and statistics carefully, they can be quite effective when used in the right context or in support of the main point you want to establish. Quotations can set up the subject of your essay or once again establish urgency, build tension, change focus, or reflect theme. Using direct quotations can give added emphasis to important points and, used sparingly, can be quite effective.

A challenge is not just the feat itself, but also how you present it. Remember that your life and interests are unique; they represent many things about your character and attributes. If a reader knows you as a person, these feats, or something similar, will not surprise them. A dry list of accomplishments will never capture that writer’s personality. The human voice speaks with subtlety, complexity, and understanding, and when you write in it, your common experiences will come to life. This does not mean that unusual experiences are the only ones that have value. You must simply find the common thread and explore how the experiences have affected you. What is less important is the actual subject matter. If you can first convince the reader that your experiences have value, then the actual subject does not matter anymore. One thing you should remember doing is to reveal yourself.

5. Polishing and Perfecting Your Essay

Always ask, what does the essay tell about me? Is the “message of me” clearly and forcefully presented in the essay? If the answer to either of these questions is “I’m not sure,” then it’s time to tinker with the essay. In the same way that a painter will change a stroke here, add a touch there, contemplate the painting for a while, and experiment with different shades, so too must the essay writer work with their essay until it seems just right. There should be an element of experimentation in the production of the final draft. If time permits, it’s good to put the essay down for a few days, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Read the essay out loud—sometimes an awkward phrase can be better recognized if it is heard, rather than seen.

Be sure to proofread carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Misspellings are a neutral mistake, but an apostrophe out of place is jarring. Grammatical errors can detract from even the strongest essay. Look for excessive repetition. This can come in the form of word or phrase repetition within sentences, or more globally, the overuse of the same examples, metaphors, or structure of the essay.
