For that reason, an excellent conclusion that gives the reader a good sense of who you are and makes the essay memorable and meaningful. If you have given it your all in this statement, you should not need to include an “objective” to summarize your experiences or future plans. These things should be conveyed in the body of the essay and in a summary sense, throughout.

But introspection is challenging and can lead to a clichéd statement of your goals and your future plans. Even an informal essay can be informative, yet a sense of respect for the audience, combined with unique voice and perspective, helps maintain a sense of form and relevance. Quotations or statistics can also be useful in your statement. Although you should use famous quotations and statistics carefully, they can be quite effective when used in the right context or in support of the main point you want to establish. Quotations can set up the subject of your essay or once again establish urgency, build tension, change focus, or reflect theme. Using direct quotations can give added emphasis to important points and, used sparingly, can be quite effective.

A challenge is not just the feat itself, but also how you present it. Remember that your life and interests are unique; they represent many things about your character and attributes. If a reader knows you as a person, these feats, or something similar, will not surprise them. A dry list of accomplishments will never capture that writer’s personality. The human voice speaks with subtlety, complexity, and understanding, and when you write in it, your common experiences will come to life. This does not mean that unusual experiences are the only ones that have value. You must simply find the common thread and explore how the experiences have affected you. What is less important is the actual subject matter. If you can first convince the reader that your experiences have value, then the actual subject does not matter anymore. One thing you should remember doing is to reveal yourself.

5. Polishing and Perfecting Your Essay

Always ask, what does the essay tell about me? Is the “message of me” clearly and forcefully presented in the essay? If the answer to either of these questions is “I’m not sure,” then it’s time to tinker with the essay. In the same way that a painter will change a stroke here, add a touch there, contemplate the painting for a while, and experiment with different shades, so too must the essay writer work with their essay until it seems just right. There should be an element of experimentation in the production of the final draft. If time permits, it’s good to put the essay down for a few days, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Read the essay out loud—sometimes an awkward phrase can be better recognized if it is heard, rather than seen.

Be sure to proofread carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Misspellings are a neutral mistake, but an apostrophe out of place is jarring. Grammatical errors can detract from even the strongest essay. Look for excessive repetition. This can come in the form of word or phrase repetition within sentences, or more globally, the overuse of the same examples, metaphors, or structure of the essay.
