The Power of Psychology: Insights and Applications from Leading Experts

1. Introduction to the Field of Psychology

Psychology is of interest to many people. People want to know about the causes of their emotions, why their children develop the way they do, what happens when we sleep, what produces hallucinations, how advertising influences our thoughts and behavior, and many other questions. Students are thus eager to register for courses dealing with psychology. Many institutions lack the resources to satisfy this demand, and often students are placed on waiting lists. This is a sorry state of affairs if psychology is slow to expand and to make its principles widely known. Although, it must be admitted, many books written by psychologists are read by lay people, but quite often psychological research findings of a more general nature are not easily or quickly communicated and distributed. Yet psychology should have many implications for society and the economy.

Psychologists must, therefore, help increase general knowledge of their subject by participating in conferences and meetings at which social workers, teachers, hospital officials, labor administrators, jurists, and politicians are present. Our profession is extremely well organized today in the form of scientific societies that host meetings. At the same time, we do, however, have to question whether the authorities who supply us with our material resources are showing sufficient concern. Psychology is one of the modern sciences with a particularly high public acceptance. Newspaper articles have contributed a great deal to popularizing our subject. It is now time that we be aware not only of this phenomenon but also of the implications and dispositions that have been necessary to make our work known to the public. This is why the Advisory Committee on Psychology of the European Science Foundation launched the idea of producing this book. The aim of the book, written by psychologists and addressed to psychologists and to all other types of scientists, is to present a comprehensive overview of the roots of psychology, its theories, its medical and humanistic aspects, and its professional and educational implications.

2. Key Theories and Concepts in Psychology

This section includes a brief overview of some key concepts and theories of psychology that are explored more fully in more specialized classes. The first part of the chapter includes explanations of biological concepts that are typically part of the neurosciences such as parts of and functions of the brain, synaptic communication, the structure and function of neurons, as well as organization of sensory, motor and association areas of the cerebral cortex. Then, coverage of psychological concepts includes identifying and discriminating internal and external factors, and introducing relevant areas of memory function and recall. The term itself is derived from ancient Greek words “psyche” (life, mental) and “logos” (knowledge, study) in which the mind and soul are studied across case material developed through data from the scientific method, case studies, and natural observations.

Biological Concepts Central to Psychology What is the mind? The concept of mind encompasses the function of the brain, the activity of the nervous system and the role of the individual in society. The “mind” is the activity of the brain and consciousness arises from and is dependent upon the brain. Different parts of the brain serve different roles; however when talking about psychology, mind, and thinking – what are the different parts of the brain recruited to do? At their simplest, what does this thing called the brain actually do? We rely heavily on the larger brain or the cerebrum for performing most tasks of the mind such as memory, associating sensory information with the context of life, and what we often term as thinking. Because the brain is a very specialized organ – with the vast majority of neurons found within its structures – it is responsible for a number of the more complex aspects of mind such as problem-solving, empathy, direct motor activity, interpretive tasks, recording and recall of installment learning, differentiating between data streams (hearing, monitoring, and seeing an array of information), reflecting on different areas of memory recall.

3. Applications of Psychology in Various Fields

The application of research findings by psychologists in government, business and industry, and clinics outside the academy deserves a standing ovation. The translation of psychology research into practice entails challenging processes of discovery, development, implementation, and communication. While these applications themselves reveal the power of psychology, they also raise and sometimes answer important questions about the needs of our society, the relevance of our field, and the communication of our results. The Handbook concludes with portions comprising chapters that discuss the applications of psychology in diverse content matter, effective education and learning, protecting the environment, energy use, economics, well-being, mental health, and technology, and the global health and well-being of the United States and improvements in psychological science.

The power of psychology lies in its way of thinking, knowing, and discovering. Translating that power into societal progress, however, requires intellectual resources in psychology and its related disciplines. As Peter Drucker stated, “Without facts and principles elucidated through research, cultivated judgment would be little more than a walk in the darkened woods.” We need continuous research to be the sharp cutting edge of our accumulated intelligence, enabling us to move toward the realization of a better world.

4. Emerging Trends and Future Directions in Psychology

Sometimes referred to as “the study of study,” meta-psychology is a movement within psychology that focuses on designing studies in a more thoughtful and unbiased manner. The impetus for this movement has arisen from several factors. As psychology has grown, so has the number of published studies in the field. The sheer volume can be overwhelming and lead to the most up-to-date findings. Within meta-psychology, the use of Bayesian statistics, in particular, is leading the way in psychological research. However, as the field of meta-psychology matures, it appears that proponents may be fracturing along sectarian lines. Just as scholars have debated the best ways to use unique methods and nullify the tendencies of their previous methodological enemies, some areas of meta-psychology have begun to mislead the movement.

There has been criticism of applying techniques in new and old ways (e.g., using Bayesian statistics to win over non-Bayesian skeptics on new grounds) and doing so in biased ways. There is also criticism and confusion about what metascience is. Some have argued that metascientists have abandoned the boxes and arrows of cognitive psychology as being too simplistic, but doing so has just created an alternative container of equal simplicity. Others have criticized the movement for not going far enough, hypothesizing that it is not just specific findings that may be most at risk of bias. If the overall probability of a positive result increases, consider a fairly typical rate of a 25% chance at any given p value (i.e., the rate expected from chance alone).
