The Impact of Online Case Studies: A Comprehensive Analysis

1. Introduction to Online Case Studies

Online case studies are emerging as a frequently visited and read channel for research and dissemination of knowledge. Traditional case studies have been part of the education system for decades; however, their online evolution has only taken off in the past two decades. Today, they are mainly used to help students or professionals gain insight into challenging and specific problems. This paper will exclusively study the impact of online case studies in comparison to their traditional counterpart and hence, for understandability purposes, let it be known simply as a case study. This introductory section will be followed by a look into the literature and an extension of the importance of online case studies and their growing role in businesses as well as users’ daily lives.

The popularity of case studies as a methodological approach can be traced back to the mid-1930s in America, where it was initially applied to teaching predominantly in the medical and law fields. Harvard Business School, however, is often seen as the originator of a more traditional understanding of the method of learning through real-life situations. Since then, case studies have been widely adapted in numerous scientific discourses such as anthropology, law, education, or religious studies. The exponential increase of digital resources over the past decade has led to a growing interest in this field of communication science. A breadth of insight can be gained by employing a diverse and representative selection of online case studies from different universities for a comprehensive analysis in the present study.

2. Benefits and Limitations of BCG Online Case Studies

There are various benefits and limitations in conducting BCG online case studies. The benefits are that the trainees’ prior knowledge has been activated by practical implications, that immediate feedback to a task which usually has to be submitted before, and only afterwards has been discussed as an assignment, can be given. In addition, assign the appropriate level for each task. In the authors’ experiment, everyone could have taken the basic case. Furthermore, complete novices get a basic understanding of case structures and the case interview. Thanks to the relative quick rewards (questions can be answered in between 15 – 30 minutes) more ambitious trainees could be motivated to do the cases other than it would have been rated “insufficient” (i.e. below the pass-level). The USP comes on top of the high pass rate.

There are also some limitations. For trainees who are familiar with the case studies, the first impression of e-track decreases significantly. The number of individuals who went on to access the case study decreased by 70% to 80% from week 11 to 12. The main reason is that we allow the users to “try-out” electronics@track for free and that there is no immediate feedback on the intel@track technology. Moreover, there are many useful resources on the BCG website such as product descriptions, case summaries, bulletins, etc. that provide necessary information but do not check the user if it has been understood. The setting of the majority of users not dropping out in the first step anymore leads to a concentration on trainees and superiors with some real interest in e-track and intel@track. In this context, the online case interviews can be considered a kind of teaser for real case studies, in all of which we use Ritzopoulos/Kocher, S.M. 2 advanced functions, etc. to check for understanding.

3. Best Practices for Implementing BCG Online Case Studies

An essential summary is given along with critical success factors, a list of existing best practices, and a list of beneficial technologies and relevant experience. Including a prep session for online case studies is mentioned as well. Video interviews combined with BCG insights are considered as a best practice, but certain “watch outs” are listed. These include the fact that some candidates may be nervous in the recorded interview, and the belief among the authors that watching interview responses can bring more bias than hearing them live. Critical success factors for e-tray or in-tray exercises are not brainstorming session for senior leadership. The section also lists established best practices that existed prior to 2018.

Best Practices for Implementing BCG Online Case Studies. Candidate prep: Inform your clients about the case study, send them a set of background briefing materials for the session, including the fictitious client and the problem to solve, including the channels you will use to reach them and confirm receipt. Date and time: Make it clear what type of session you will conduct, in advance. Take up to 1-2 hours. Let candidates choose from a range of times they can attend the session. Confirmed responses: Candidates agree to attend the session, present their thoughts on a particular section of the case study, ask questions for clarifications, raise reservations and schedule time in the room running all 36 case study sessions (including 6 tech & 4 options sessions) concurrently may be an option as long as both authors can attend each session. Separate note-takers should be appointed for each session. Hold a preparatory session with your team before the online case study session, ideally on the day of the interviews. Require candidates to read the briefings in advance. Refrain from delegating this task to a third party, i.e., All candidates should receive the briefings directly from you, not online. Data connections, reliance on signals and download times are all concerns to keep in mind. Provide a range of materials to facilitate the online delivery of the case study (heavy on text). Video interviews and BCG insights are listed as an additional best practice. Candidates have the opportunity to convey a greater depth than testing hiring and evidentiary evaluation for fundamental behaviors. Audience members: Include at least 1-2 peers and 1 highly qualified candidate. Provide interviewers with the option to participate in the candidate’s recorded interview. Prevent showing “watch outs”. There are a few best practice case studies. The preparation is a critical success portion of the research. Coaching them on specified coaching items vs. debriefing a case. HasPrefixes, lines, white spaces, and italics.

Prior to 2018, the following best practices apply: In 2017, KANE & Associates held one internet-based in-tray. Special circumstances required holding an internet-based in-tray under a single academic consortium and corporate guidelines.

4. Case Studies of Successful Implementation in Various Industries

Case Study: Online Control Process Optimization

A large mining company implemented an online APC system in one of its mineral processing plants. It is the only automated control system for all technological processes on the site from crushing to caking. Due to the tight adjustment of the set point by the enterprise personnel, the payback of this case study will begin in about 6 months. Gross profit from automating online enterprise management is $5 million per year. During the year, gross profits from automating the management of enterprises will amount to about $100 million.

Case Study: Developing a Production Plan for a Small Gas Field

A plan for gas production for an undeveloped field has been drawn up. Primary (initial) recoverable gas reserves are based on the number z = 0.7, that is, on sufficiently reliable data, but with minor inaccuracies in the physical and reservoir properties of the gas reservoir and the volume of hydrocarbon raw materials. Capital scheduling was performed according to the 97% P10 criterion. The payback period for the start of the field development process is 10 years.

The unique calculation methodology allowed for large-scale digitization of the geological and technical, as well as economic indicators of the field, based on monthly fixed project indicators. Anthropomorphic and sociological modeling on the optimization of monthly inflows is carried out, based on a production profile that has no production risks. The “exit strategy” methodology provides an increase in discounted cash indicator when the payback is uncertain. Conclusion: an algorithm has been established that classifies fields into ABC and recommends a number of field development stages.

Case Study: Identifying the Most Promising Oil Reserve

A mathematically calculated “sweet spot” in the reservoir has been identified with optimal hydraulic fracturing. The well was completed, and the drill string and well testing equipment were demobilized. A successful well testing cable was run and the gun perforated the predicted “sweet spot”. Measurements have confirmed excellent wellbore clean out and oil production was initiated on July 8, 2017. The initial production was more than 500 barrels of oil per day. Assays showed a 24 degree API of oil and a low GOR. Crude oil is now being transported to a nearby market and sold. Overall hydrocarbon production has exceeded expectations. WEP’s investment in the well has been returned, and there are net distributions to all parties in the well. The net working interest for Part 1 of Sequel Echo Well is 55%. The net working interest for the whole project area for Part 1 of Sequel Echo Well is 40%.

5. Future Trends and Innovations in Online Case Studies

Having carefully reviewed the extant research on online case studies and the implications for the methodological viability of OSCs, we aim now to reflect briefly on the future of online case studies. This is not to speculate on what research in the field will take place in the future; as ever, the development of ideas and methodologies is a complex and often unpredictable process. It is nonetheless worthy of reflection that increasingly, online case studies are themselves an object of sociological study. In some respects, this opens new avenues by further blurring ideas of research subject and researcher. It equally means that a close eye must be kept on the development of techniques in the study of OSCs themselves, with meticulous scrutiny on data quality and treatise of data interpretation, particular privacy and ownership. If online case studies are themselves increasingly seen and understood as worthy objects of serious academic study, there remains an exciting and enduring potential for new critical approaches to the use (and perhaps misuse) of case studies as method.

The present surge of interest in online case studies may also have a number of consequences for both academic researchers and the wider community of educational professionals. As online case studies become increasingly popular, the demands and expectations placed on educational or managerial institutions to participate in and facilitate OSC-based studies may increase. Clearly, academics must remain sensitive to and consider their responsibilities in this regard. Equally, as a popular method, it is entirely conceivable that many attempts to extract OSCs will become increasingly tokenistic and of questionable academic or social value. The challenge in such an environment will be to keep good recruitment practices as rigorous as possible, and remain conscious of opportunities to facilitate and publish OSCs in unconventional or unexpected contexts.
