The Essential Guide to Writing a Nursing Capstone Project
Writing a Nursing Capstone Project
1. Introduction to Nursing Capstone Projects Nursing capstone projects have become compulsory for nursing students in various parts of the world. Despite the growth in their presence, little information about the experience is available. In this complete contribution, designed for both educators and students, we present the essential elements of a student-developed aspect while completing a capstone project, introduced through a student story. The guide is intended to help instructors, committee members, and students create a productive and stimulating project. Successful capstone projects require dedicated and enthusiastic mentors and supporting committees. They also are shaped by institutional policy, and so we also touch upon some of the implications of requiring students to complete original research at the program’s end. We begin with an overview of the purpose of capstone projects and offer five important outcomes of the capstone experience before offering guidelines to faculty, advisors, and external admissions committee members.
Capstone Experiences in Nursing Nursing capstone projects are growing in popularity as final culminating experiences in undergraduate and graduate nursing education. This capstone policy, driven by institutional and accreditation requirements and faculty members’ desires to shift from testing knowledge to demonstrating learning, is one of five expected program outcomes articulated by the typical Department of Nursing capped baccalaureate program. The five expected outcomes suggest how and why to give final, refined, and synthesized evidence of program outcomes through capstone. Each of the five is motivated by the overall university and program missions, the institutional student learning commitment, Nursing & midlevel learning outcomes, and the mission of the Baccalaureate Program in Nursing. The Capstone-Out and the e-Portfolio that is out will become part of the policies for our ABET accreditation program. We adopt Tanner’s Vision and Target Outcomes as that is where this capstone experience fits in and helps achieve the Along the way students should. The remaining outcomes are the keys to complete a successful capstone, an on-time completion of the Capstone e-Portfolio.
When the time comes to write a nursing capstone project, you will likely have the flexibility to choose a topic that interests you. While the task of selecting the topic is a big commitment, take it as an opportunity. You need to set aside plenty of time to get this done right because your topic will be with you for several months. This capstone project is your opportunity to build on your nursing education and implement your acquired skills in a highly intensive and complex project. Do not, under any circumstances, underestimate it because the most comprehensive and difficult item that you will write is your capstone paper. Here, it is recommended to focus on two important issues that are relevant and impactful when choosing your capstone project topic.
The first question concerns the relevance of potential capstone project topics. In all cases, this may eliminate topics that have become outdated or have been addressed in enough detail. More current hot topics, debates, or issues in healthcare can often be found on social media platforms like and in nursing journals, which often have editorials or general features about such matters. Stop going back to journal editions because, unlike blogs, editorials and features will still be relevant regardless of how many years ago they were released. Journal articles also describe studies that have been carried out, but more accurate information on the number of studies is available directly from the source.
Section 3: Conducting a Comprehensive Literature Review
The process of conducting a comprehensive literature review is an important step when completing a capstone project. Reviewing existing research and scholarly works related to your capstone topic can familiarize you with the debate and developments while helping locate potential gaps upon which to build your capstone project. To begin, be sure to access the UNE Library. Databases such as CINAHL Plus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and OVID are nursing-specific databases that provide access to many scholarly nursing and healthcare journals and are good resources for research literature. Use both CINAHL and PubMed as good starting points for scoping out research. Databases such as PsycINFO are more specifically cataloged by psychology researchers. These are useful for social and behavioral topics.
When you have chosen your topic, the following chart will give you several databases and websites to start looking for relevant research literature. Many academic databases are multidiscipline databases and will offer resources for a variety of conclusions and deduces. In addition to scholarly databases, some government websites offer electronic access to data, statistics, and research reports. These websites are accessible and provide factual data; not all are updated annually. Overall, depending on which databases you select, you should be able to access databases of grey literature, journal articles, theses, dissertations – an excellent tool for evidence-based practice! Critical analysis of these studies and synthesis for valid conclusions is essential for your capstone. Always be sure you can sum up the literature that you find and use it to support the validity of your action in the capstone.
Methodology
The research methodology needs to be sound and aligned with the approach chosen for your project. The three main research methodologies used in nursing projects include controlled trials, case studies, and surveys. Each approach demands different data collection methods, so you should carefully design the research methods and data collection techniques according to your research methodology, and be clear in your methods section about why you made this decision. It is also important to discuss the various data collection methodologies and choose the most suitable for your research project. Furthermore, possible biases identified (e.g., sampling, interview bias) and the procedures you will use to minimize them also need to be discussed.
Data Collection
In order to discuss data collection, a clearly defined research design is needed. There are five common research designs used in nursing research, including descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, experimental, and meta-analysis. After a research design is selected, the next important step is to discuss the application of data collection techniques. The data collected for both qualitative and quantitative research requires public documentation in your report. Choose the most appropriate data collection method for your research objectives, and as mentioned in the methods section, be clear about why you chose this method. Ethical considerations should be discussed concerning data collection and the reporting of bias in the findings of your research project. Make sure that there is a discussion of the measures taken to ensure rigor and credibility in the data collection of the research project in the methods section.
After you have completed your research and drafted your findings, you will need to translate that work into a written format so that you can be evaluated. It is important to present your findings in a logical and organized way that will make it easy for the reader to understand what you did and why. Remember that – at its core – your research involved asking a question and conducting a thorough investigation to answer it. You will need to provide the reader with the full story that explains how you addressed your question and what you found out. Your narrative must be coherent and comprehensive. Aside from answering your question and showing that you gained the skills in research that your experiences provided for, the purpose of your capstone project report is to clearly explain the entire process of inquiry that you went through, step by step.
Appropriately, there is some flexibility in the report format based on the nature of your project. At a minimum, your report should have the following components: a title page, an “executive summary” (at the beginning of the report) that you write after everything else is done but goes at the very beginning of your paper, an introduction, a literature review, a methods section, a results section, a discussion section (combined with the results section for many projects), and references. Depending on the nature of your capstone project, you might also need to include other sections in the report or change the order in which they appear. Regardless, you need to be sure to follow the scholarly writing style and format guidelines in the most current edition of the American Psychological Association Publication Manual (or Manual of the American Psychological Association, published and updated annually). Part of your grade will be based on your use of the APA style. Be sure to also check the scholarly work for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
