In response to a daily news agenda, with a public discourse dominated by the adversity of scandal, difference, and violent oppositions, education could offer us a humanising gift of a hopeful lens through which to look out at the future. Focusing on what the UK alone can offer the world, we have argued for a different vision of humanity for the 2020s that will involve our education system.

In this essay, we have drawn from exciting ideas and lively discussions both about current education and how it might be differently conceived and delivered in the future. We hope that by casting thoughts forward, this essay can act as a catalyst for a vital element of the current social renewal: the purpose, content, structure, methods, and experiences of education and learning. In doing this, we have been alive to six important debates that will shape the future of the UK. These include the grand challenges of the UK and its contribution to the global goals, as well as heart-of-the-nation debates about our values, moral purpose, national mission, identity, and character. Clearly, each of these debates has implications for and influence over our education system.
